{"id":396412,"date":"2026-01-08T16:11:10","date_gmt":"2026-01-08T16:11:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/396412\/"},"modified":"2026-01-08T16:11:10","modified_gmt":"2026-01-08T16:11:10","slug":"expect-the-unexpected-in-the-last-jobs-report-of-2025","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/396412\/","title":{"rendered":"Expect the unexpected in the last jobs report of 2025"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk4ecq7y000x27qhfcpxe0om@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            On Friday, the Bureau of Labor Statistics will release the final jobs report for 2025 \u2014 and economists\u2019 estimates vary wildly over what we should expect.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk4ectsq00003j6qlvbhgt52@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The consensus estimates are for 55,000 jobs to have been added in December, a figure that\u2019s in line with year-to-date job growth but slightly lower than November\u2019s preliminary gains of 64,000 jobs.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk4jqcb400013b6p1jc9w6re@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But some economists say seasonal factors such as the holiday hiring peak could put December\u2019s monthly total somewhere north of 105,000.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk4gqhqc00053j6q1sk35quo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Either way, the unemployment rate is expected to tick down to 4.5% after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/12\/16\/economy\/us-jobs-report-final-november-october\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">hitting a four-year high of 4.6%<\/a> in November, FactSet consensus estimates show.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk4epvat00053j6qzdao8os4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            While data like that would be a seemingly welcome indicator of labor market strength, it more likely would be a \u201cred herring,\u201d said Gregory Daco, chief economist at EY-Parthenon.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk4etu6n000b3j6qmfirdamj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe true, underlying momentum for job growth is likely much softer and has been much softer for some time now,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk4f29xu000h3j6qpt8e4bo9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Whether it\u2019s 55,000 or even double that, December\u2019s job gains won\u2019t change the story of the labor market in 2025: That, with the exception of the pandemic-distorted 2020, last year\u2019s employment growth was the weakest seen in decades.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk4fsq0000163j6qq0jfovcn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cTotal job gains for 2025 are on track to be a meager 710,000,\u201d Heather Long, chief economist at Navy Federal Credit Union, said in a statement. \u201cThat\u2019s the worst hiring outside of a recession since 2003. Even 2010, on the heels of the Great Recession, was a better year for hiring than 2025.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/gettyimages-2252256215.jpg\" alt=\"A man makes deliveries in Manhattan in New York City, on December 16, 2025.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"4000\" width=\"6000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk4fc51e000r3j6q7rfqpfqn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For much of the past 12 months, extremely high uncertainty (from sweeping policies such as those related to tariffs); dramatic shifts in the nation\u2019s immigration flows; and, to a much lesser extent, companies testing the AI waters, have resulted in muted employment gains \u2013 or even outright losses \u2013 across most industries.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk4fh0lm000u3j6qnfrzd0jf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The lone exceptions have been health care \u2013 an industry growing as a result of an aging population \u2013 and leisure and hospitality, which has reaped some of the spoils from an increasingly bifurcated economy.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk4fjpcw000x3j6q6g9mkuoh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cHealth services is an expensive type of service for most consumers; leisure and hospitality [spending] is a discretionary service for all consumers,\u201d said Nela Richardson, chief economist at payroll company ADP. \u201cThese two sectors are consistent with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/09\/18\/business\/us-k-shaped-economy-spending\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">K-shaped economy<\/a> where higher-income consumers are driving spending.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk4fbtr2000k3j6q4rchadzv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Those two sectors, which make up about 22% of all employment, accounted for 84% of the total job gains seen from January through November 2025. And for the remaining 78%, it\u2019s been a far different story.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk4men8d00013j6qkvyxzo68@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The labor market became even more lopsided after April 2025, when President Donald Trump made his biggest and broadest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/04\/02\/economy\/key-takeaways-from-trumps-liberation-day-tariffs\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">tariff announcement.<\/a> Sentiment plummeted and uncertainty skyrocketed, stifling hiring plans in the process. From April through November 2025, job gains in health care and leisure and hospitality outpaced the net jobs added across the entire labor market during those eight months.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk4g6ul4001c3j6qdhis5nol@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Pretty much every other industry is in the throes of a \u201chiring recession,\u201d Navy Federal Credit Union\u2019s Long said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk4m726s00003j6qqxs9p8fd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Data released earlier this week further confirmed the listless state of the broader labor market.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk4nlast00043j6q8kke244c@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The BLS\u2019 latest Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey data released Wednesday showed that US businesses sought out fewer workers in November and hiring activity slumped to match its lowest rate in more than a decade (excluding the data- and economy-distorting pandemic).\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk4nsgvv000d3j6qus1a3379@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            At the same time, layoff activity remained low in November, along with the rate of people quitting their jobs.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk4glouw00003j6quimzl6gi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A certain amount of turnover is needed for a healthy labor market and growing economy. But as it stands now, it\u2019s taking months for people to find work as the US jobs market <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/12\/09\/economy\/us-jolts-job-openings-october-september\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">is more like an \u201cexclusive club.\u201d<\/a>\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/gettyimages-2251250984.jpg\" alt=\"Job seekers attend a career fair in Harlem hosted by Assemblymember Jordan Wright in New York City, on December 10, 2025.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"4000\" width=\"6000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk4ofdsc000p3j6qtz97r1i4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That low-fire trend likely continued through December, according to new data this week that some economists say suggests a bottoming out for this labor market slowdown may be near.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk4oqaxw001c3j6qv8f2pfxh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            US businesses\u2019 job cut announcements fell to a 17-month low in December, according to Challenger, Gray &amp; Christmas data released Thursday morning.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk4odn8c000n3j6qnqs8i0vp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Employers announced plans for 35,553 layoffs last month while hiring announcements were the highest for the month since 2022, Challenger noted.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk4ogubb000v3j6qhmj89wme@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe year closed with the fewest announced layoff plans all year;
