\n\t\u201cGolden Bachelor\u201d Season 2 star Mel Owens has admitted he regrets the comments he made about age limits for contestants on the dating reality show.<\/p>\n
\n\t\u201cThose [views and comments] were a mistake by me. It\u2019s unfair. It\u2019s insensitive, like I said. And I want to earn it back,\u201d Owens said in a recent Glamour interview<\/a>, referring to the trust of those affected. \u201cI have to earn it back every single moment that I\u2019m on the show.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tDuring a June appearance on the \u201cIn the Trenches\u201d podcast<\/a>, the former NFL player turned lawyer said he would \u201ccut\u201d any woman over the age of 60 and urged producers to avoid casting anyone with \u201cartificial hips\u201d or \u201cwigs.\u201d <\/p>\n \n\t\u201cIt\u2019s blind up until they get out of the limo. But they asked me, \u2018What\u2019s your preferences?\u2019 So, I just said 45 to 60, just being honest,\u201d Owens said. \u201cAnd then the process went, and I was selected, right? And then we had lunch with the executive producer. I said, \u2018You know, if they\u2019re 60 or over, I\u2019m cutting them.\u2019 \u2018Oh Mel, you can\u2019t, you know, this is not the \u2018Silver Bachelor.\u2019 It\u2019s the \u2018Golden Bachelor.\u2019 He goes, \u2018but they\u2019re going to be hot, don\u2019t worry about it. Don\u2019t worry about it.’\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tThe 66-year-old also expressed that he expects all the contestants to be in good shape, saying on the podcast: \u201cI had no resume, but they asked me, what is my, like, my profile? Well, they got to be fit because I stay in shape, should work out and stuff. And I told them, you know, try to stay away from the artificial hips and the wigs, you know, that kind of stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\t\u201cI know there\u2019s amazing women out there,\u201d Owens added, noting that he\u2019s looking for someone \u201cwho\u2019s a lifetime learner, enjoys to love life and work out and stay fit and eat and have fun and be energetic and live life.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tIn the Glamour interview, Owens revealed that he apologized to the contestants while filming \u201cThe Golden Bachelor<\/a>,\u201d saying: \u201cI apologized to the women on the show. When I first walked in, I addressed it. I apologized to them. I said, \u2018It was unfair, insensitive. I want to earn it back. Just give me the chance.\u2019 And hopefully, these last two weeks I earned some of that back.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tOwens, whose casting was announced in April, succeeds Gerry Turner as the Golden Bachelor. During the show\u2019s inaugural season, Turner chose Theresa Nist as the winner, and the couple married in a televised ABC special in January 2024.
