Now, new research suggests that some intelligent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/science\/dogs-koala-poop-conservation-australia-c2e-hnk-spc\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">dogs<\/a> can expand their vocabulary in just the same way.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk2kb4m0000b356p5xue2ao1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Children as young as 18 months old can learn labels for objects by listening to other people\u2019s exchanges, according to a study published Thursday in the journal <a href=\"http:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1126\/science.adq5474\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Science<\/a>. They do this by monitoring the speakers\u2019 gaze, picking up communicative cues and extracting key words from sentences.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk2kb4m0000c356ptsb4d5gb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Researchers at E\u00f6tv\u00f6s Lor\u00e1nd University (ELTE) in Hungary wanted to find out whether dogs that were \u201cgifted\u201d at learning toy names could also learn new words simply by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/02\/03\/world\/marmosets-communication-study-scli-intl-scn\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">eavesdropping<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk2om1sb0000356p4sxebaq8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            These gifted dogs were assessed and identified when their owners, after seeing social media posts or advertisements, contacted the researchers to say they believe their dog knows the names of toys.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk2kb4m0000e356p56fu0sdd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For the study, owners of 10 gifted dogs first introduced two new toys and named them, repeatedly saying the toy names while interacting directly with their pet.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk2kb4m0000i356p89raowgg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            These interactions lasted for multiple minute-long sessions across several days.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk2pe2by0006356pqqyeh9jp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Researchers found that \u201ceight minutes was enough for the dogs to learn the name of two new toys,\u201d cognitive researcher and animal trainer Shany Dror told CNN. Seven out of the 10 dogs reliably identified and retrieved the new toys when asked to do so by their owners.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk2p9ul30004356pthuqk0fm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Dror led the study over the past few years while completing her PhD at ELTE and then as a postdoctoral researcher at the Clever Dog Lab of the University of Veterinary Medicine in Vienna.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk2kb4m0000j356pz859htee@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The researchers repeated the experiment in \u201coverheard\u201d conditions with the same owner and dog pairs. Owners included the name of the new toy in sentences and passed the toy among themselves, but they could not look at or communicate with their dogs, and their dogs were not allowed to interact with them or grab the toy.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk2rdt3i0002356plju0jsxs@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            To stop each dog from trying to reach the toy, the owners sat at a dining table or on the floor while the dog was put behind a child safety gate, or was in a dog cradle or bed.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk2kb4m0000l356pejff5b5h@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Seven out of the 10 dogs were again reliably able to identify and retrieve the new toys after overhearing the toy names \u2013 six of them were among the same dogs that performed well in the first experiment.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk40dju30001356pg3pxe7o4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            This showed that gifted dogs \u201ccan learn novel object labels by overhearing interactions, in a manner functionally similar\u201d to young children, the researchers said.\n    <\/p>\n<p>        Depth of understanding<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk2kb4m0000m356pziozbyn6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Eager to test whether the dogs were also using social cues to learn new object labels, like infants do, the researchers carried out a third experiment with eight dogs, four of which were among the original 10.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk2kb4m0000n356ptltab7je@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            This time, the pet owners said the name of the toy within sentences only after they had placed the toy in a bucket and the toy was out of view.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk2kb4m0000o356p3lrgcv77@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Again, when tested, the majority of the dogs correctly identified the new toys \u2013 and they still remembered the names of the toys two weeks later.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk2kb4m0000q356pzwoh9jho@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cSo, what we conclude from this is that the dogs are able to learn under very different conditions, and they\u2019re doing it very flexibly,\u201d Dror said, adding that \u201cit tells us the depth of how much these dogs are able to understand our human interactions.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/shira-p2.jpeg\" alt=\"Shira, a 9-year-old rescue dog that knows the names of more than 300 dog toys.\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk2kb4m0000r356pd9srj8ma@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The findings also suggest the complex cognitive and social abilities that help humans learn by overhearing others probably \u201cevolved before language, and that\u2019s why dogs can also do it,\u201d she continued.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk2o3vzc001x356pq7iatlam@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            During the domestication process, \u201cthe dogs that were the best in communicating with humans and in understanding humans were the ones that reproduced,\u201d Dror added. \u201cAnd this is what we see today, that they\u2019re so good at understanding human communication that some dogs are even able to learn when we\u2019re not actually talking to them, just by passively observing us.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk2kb4m0000v356pyat6uamp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            While these talented dogs could learn words in a variety of ways, the findings \u201cshould not be extended to the general dog population,\u201d according to the researchers.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk2kb4m0000w356pabyr6638@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            They carried out a similar \u201coverheard\u201d experiment on 10 Border Collies that had not previously learned any object names and found that typical family dogs do not learn new toy names like the gifted dogs do.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk2kb4m0000x356pjl47oxw9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Dror and her team have been working with this group of \u201cvery special dogs that know names of toys\u201d for several years, she said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk2kb4m0000y356p19ujwi0f@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Known as \u201cGifted Word Learner\u201d dogs, these animals have previously been found in studies to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/01\/26\/europe\/dog-word-study-intl-scli-scn\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">learn the names of toys <\/a>after hearing them only four times, learn up to 12 toys \u201cor even more\u201d per week, and remember toy names for more than two years, Dror said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk2kb4m00010356pr64m733w@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            While the researchers see \u201ca lot of Border Collies\u201d among these gifted dogs, the ability is still \u201cvery rare,\u201d according to Dror. Other breeds among the gifted dogs that participated in the study were a German shepherd, a Labrador retriever, a miniature Australian shepherd, a Blue Heeler and Australian Shepherd mix.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk2q2wm40000356p8k8oj3vd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            While it is \u201cinteresting\u201d that the dogs have \u201chuman-like skills,\u201d the study results are \u201cnot so surprising because it\u2019s not the first study in that direction,\u201d comparative psychologist Juliane Br\u00e4uer, a post-doctoral researcher at Friedrich Schiller University Jena in Germany, told CNN.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk2sykmo0005356pdnchyjnu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A similar ability to learn words by overhearing has been documented in two bonobos, as well as an African grey parrot \u2013 however, the parrot\u2019s achievement also involved some direct teaching.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk40yj2n0003356pll9968ak@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A 2025 <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/40220068\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">study<\/a> found that family dogs can recognize command words such as \u201csit\u201d and \u201cdown\u201d in speech not directed at them. However, only gifted dogs have been found to learn the names of objects spontaneously when playing with their owners, and their ability to learn these labels by overhearing conversations between others had not been tested until now.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk2kb4m00011356pmd7l25cr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The researchers do not yet understand exactly why certain dogs have this special ability.
