{"id":397187,"date":"2026-01-09T00:05:23","date_gmt":"2026-01-09T00:05:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/397187\/"},"modified":"2026-01-09T00:05:23","modified_gmt":"2026-01-09T00:05:23","slug":"andy-fairweather-low-on-eric-clapton-jimi-hendrix-and-more","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/397187\/","title":{"rendered":"Andy Fairweather Low on Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix and more"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"b854daac-2fe6-4968-8127-29730a13ceca\">\u201cI\u2019ve been lucky in my life with the people I\u2019ve worked with,\u201d says Andy Fairweather Low. \u201c\u2018Blessed\u2019 is the word I would use to best describe it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Prior to becoming a regular sideman for the likes of Eric Clapton and Roger Waters, and a gun-for-hire guitarist for sessions that included those for Gerry Rafferty, the Who, and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarplayer.com\/players\/david-crosby-wooden-ships\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.guitarplayer.com\/players\/david-crosby-wooden-ships\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">David Crosby<\/a> \u2014 to name but a few\u2014the Welsh guitarist was lead vocalist with 1960s pop combo Amen Corner. During their run, he played gigs with acts of the day that included Pink Floyd and Jimi Hendrix.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"b854daac-2fe6-4968-8127-29730a13ceca-2\">Soon after their split in late 1969, he embarked on a prolific solo career. But it\u2019s his work with Waters and Clapton \u2014 where Low featured on both recordings and tours\u2014that etched his guitar-playing reputation into stone.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p>We tapped him for memories of his time with some of rock\u2019s biggest artists, including Clapton, Waters, Hendrix, Pete Townshend and former Rolling Stones bassist Bill Wyman.<\/p>\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:56.25%;\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/rvsvWk2NvHUoPCZkT6T5F6.jpg\" alt=\"Portrait of Welsh rock musician Andy Fairweather Low photographed at his home in Cardiff, Wales, on August 30, 2013. [Northern Ireland\u2019s Eire Apparent featured future Spooky Tooth\/Wings guitarist Henry McCullough and were noted for having Hendrix produce and play on their only album].<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe shows were sometimes a bit lively and a bit out there, and the places we played were concrete town halls. In Sheffield, Jimi ended the set by smashing up the drums. Then in Newcastle, he sent his Flying V into the Marshall cab and proceeded to smash it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApparently, Jimi liked our group. Kathy Etchingham, his girlfriend at the time, was asked what Jimi thought of the other acts on the bill, like Pink Floyd and the Nice. (Image credit: Alamy)<\/p>\n<p id=\"ed337cda-e034-4c44-8dd4-437585568bbf\">\u201cA couple of years later, I was in New York and Jimi asked me to come down to the studio to do some backing vocals on a new version of \u2018Stone Free.\u2019 [The April 1969 sessions produced a finished track that was first released on the 1975 album Crash Landing.]<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Engineer] Eddie Kramer was there taking care of everything, and my friend Roger Chapman was there as well. We both ended up putting backing vocals to the song. But in my humble opinion, the original \u2018Stone Free\u2019 was absolutely the best version.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-15ec8ed3-9ee6-4e68-9cb9-2747f7de5a78\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>Bill Wyman<\/p>\n<p id=\"585a4981-7323-4df4-bbb6-5c00ef32de73\">\u201cThe first time I saw Bill was with the Rolling Stones, at Sophia Gardens, Cardiff, Wales, on February 28, 1964. That was the night that changed my whole life. That\u2019s when I knew I wanted to be a guitar player.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut my association with Bill began during the ARMS Charity Concerts in 1983. [The star-studded shows featuring Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and many others supported Action into Research for Multiple Sclerosis and were created by ex-Faces bassist Ronnie Lane, who had MS.]. That\u2019s when our friendship really began. Because the tour was to raise money for Ronnie Lane, Bill then came up with the idea of putting an album together to raise even more money for the cause to help people with multiple sclerosis. He asked if I would produce a pair of songs for the album featuring Jimmy Page and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarplayer.com\/guitarists\/paul-rodgers-on-jimmy-page-jeff-beck-brian-may-and-more\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.guitarplayer.com\/guitarists\/paul-rodgers-on-jimmy-page-jeff-beck-brian-may-and-more\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Paul Rodgers<\/a> while he was away. So I put a band together, with Jimmy Page on guitar, Paul on vocals and me on <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarplayer.com\/gear\/best-bass-guitars\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.guitarplayer.com\/gear\/best-bass-guitars\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">bass<\/a>, and we did \u2018Slippin\u2019 and Slidin\u2019\u2019 and \u2018These Arms of Mine.\u2019 They turned out really well.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSoon afterward, Bill and I were in a taxi on the way to do a breakfast TV show when he told me, \u2018They\u2019ve agreed to do a video for \u201cThese Arms of Mine,\u201d but they don\u2019t want you in it.\u2019 The double whammy was when Bill\u2019s manager asked to have Bill credited for my bass playing because he was known as a bassist.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-510b21ef-e476-4d8e-90c5-8374b851ad91\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>Pete Townshend<\/p>\n<p id=\"74acd74f-9d6a-48ef-8ef2-3c422ae6ed7a\">\u201cThe first time I saw Pete was with the Who in 1965, and I might add, there weren\u2019t many people there either. But god, the energy!<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was staying at [producer] Glyn Johns\u2019 house while he was working on the Who\u2019s Who Are You album and Pete said, \u2018Tell Andy to come in to do some backing vocals.\u2019 So I did and ended up singing on \u2018Who Are You,\u2019 and five other songs too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn that album Pete was plugging his guitar directly into the board. [Townshend had a preamp that he plugged into a compressor and straight into the mixing console, and which he says he <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/thewho.org\/pete.htm\" data-url=\"https:\/\/thewho.org\/pete.htm\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">\u201cused a lot on Who Are You.\u201d<\/a>] Plugging into the board is generally a shit sound, but when Pete plugged in and banged an A chord\u2026 My god, the attack! You could cut metal with it. Nobody plays an A chord like Pete.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-3bf7db27-5417-4cae-8fb7-d20c131e3d7c\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>Roger Waters<\/p>\n<p id=\"832ed81d-b9c5-44be-b8b6-1e53749d79c2\">\u201cMy first encounter with Roger was on that November 1967 U.K. package tour with Jimi Hendrix. We had an issue. Our manager at the time was Ron King, who was an associate of the Krays [the famed British organized-crime kingpins Ronnie and Reggie Kray]. Roger had shouted at me \u2014 mind you I was still only a teenager \u2014 for touching a Leslie speaker. Ron heard it and told Roger, \u2018If you do that again, I\u2019ll break your fucking legs!\u2019 Ron was connected. He meant it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never understood the Floyd back then at all. I kept thinking to myself, Where\u2019s the backbeat? Their first song in their short set on that tour was \u2018Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun,\u2019 and the song absolutely baffled me. The irony is that it became my favorite song to play when I was in Roger\u2019s band later on.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHere\u2019s how that happened: Eric Clapton had been in Roger\u2019s band for his Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking album and tour. Afterward, when Roger made his Radio K.A.O.S. album, he reached out to me: \u2018Roger Waters here, we\u2019d like you to come up and see if we get on.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe night before I went to his studio, I had been working with Bill Wyman and had drunk at least a liter of a red wine. I woke up at 9:00 a.m., not feeling great. I rushed to the studio and Roger asked me to play on a track. He likes to laugh, and I like working with people who can laugh. <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarplayer.com\/guitarists\/david-gilmour-on-reuniting-pink-floyd-with-roger-waters\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.guitarplayer.com\/guitarists\/david-gilmour-on-reuniting-pink-floyd-with-roger-waters\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">I know what you\u2019re thinking about Roger<\/a>, but take it from me: I was there for 24 fabulous years. I wouldn\u2019t have stayed if it wasn\u2019t. I had a great time learning about how to put a show on, the dynamics, lighting, visuals\u2026 you name it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter that I did the In the Flesh tour, the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarplayer.com\/players\/pink-floyd-the-dark-side-of-the-moon-david-gilmour\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.guitarplayer.com\/players\/pink-floyd-the-dark-side-of-the-moon-david-gilmour\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dark Side of the Moon<\/a> Live tour\u2026 And we always had the best food, the best wine, the best travel, the best company. Roger gave me so much respect, loyalty, support and encouragement. He\u2019s a true friend to this day, and a bloody force of nature.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-7debc7e4-50ee-4768-9c44-ede0a9bd5b3f\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>Eric Clapton<\/p>\n<p id=\"0a78e096-6d1b-462c-aac2-7b813c827ce7\">\u201cMy first tour with Eric Clapton was ARMS in 1984, but my first time as a member of his band was when he and his group backed George Harrison in 1990 on a tour of Japan. On the first day of rehearsals, Eric asked me to join his band permanently. From there, I ended up on the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarplayer.com\/gear\/best-acoustic-guitars\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.guitarplayer.com\/gear\/best-acoustic-guitars\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">acoustic<\/a> Unplugged album, and the rest is sort of my history with him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m so proud to be on From the Cradle. It\u2019s my favorite Eric album, as he was absolutely playing at the top of his game. I\u2019ve also been back in the band a few times since too. I got paid well, I traveled well, I ate and slept well. It was wonderful to work for him. Eric liked to laugh too, and as I mentioned earlier, I like working for people who like to laugh and I never tired of listening to his playing and singing. I loved his voice. I learned so much just by watching him playing and being in his company. All he ever wanted for me was to be the best I could be. There was no competition with him. He would just say, \u2018Go for it, Andy!\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never really wanted to take solos, as I\u2019m more a rhythm guitar player. He\u2019d nod to me, but I\u2019d go, \u2018No, no,\u2019 as I believed the audience didn\u2019t really want to hear from me. But then we were playing Hyde Park in 1996, in front of 150,000 people. By then we\u2019d been on tour for about three months and I\u2019d not taken any solos. Eric wandered over to me and nodded his head as if to say, Go, take a solo!
