GREENSBORO, N.C. — CBS Sports has been pushing the envelope on its golf coverage in recent years, and the leader of that group has his eye on keeping things fresh well into the future. CBS’s 2025 season wraps up this weekend with the Wyndham Championship; it won’t broadcast another PGA Tour event until the Farmers Insurance Open in January. NBC has the FedExCup Playoffs.

Sellers Shy, CBS’s lead golf producer, is wrapping up his fifth season in the top chair. In concert with the PGA Tour, CBS broadcasts have added elements like walk-and-talk interviews, its constant leaderboard, moving drone tracing and more.

Shy plans to keep pushing.

“It goes back to this CNBC model. I mean, look at all these numbers right here on Squawk Box,” Shy said this week in Greensboro, motioning to the television screen in front of him with stock prices running across the screen, among other data points. “There are tons of opportunities every year to look at wherever you want. And that’s what our thought process is. We’re giving it to you. It’s up to you to filter what you want to see.

“You can look up here and see ball speed, club speed, spin rate. Sometimes you look down at the constant leaderboard. You can look at the tracer, you can do all that. We’re at least giving you those options.”

CBS and the tour debuted a moving drone tracer in 2024, but in 2025 they added a “smart trace.” The shot tracer changes colors based on its probability of hitting the fairway (green) or missing it (red).

“The Smart Trace created a lot of discussion,” Shy said. “Are we giving things away or not creating enough drama?”

Some viewers voiced displeasure that the tool was too accurate, sometimes giving away whether or not a ball would land in the fairway just after it left the club face. But Shy believes there’s another layer.

“It’s ‘oh my gosh it’s going to be rough,’ but is it going in a bunker? Is it going in the rough? How deep is it? There’s a whole other layer to it.”

Meanwhile, longtime CBS analyst Ian Baker-Finch announced that this week would be his final tournament with the network. Shy declined to discuss how CBS might go about finding Baker-Finch’s successor but remembered him fondly for his 19 years with the network.

“Over the air, he was determined to follow the principle of ‘less is more,’” Shy said. “More often than not, everything Finchy said had meaning and purpose.”

GREENSBORO, N.C. — CBS Sports has been pushing the envelope on its golf coverage in recent years, and…

[443
49,48,6714,4846,622,3747,82
post-39721","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-golf","tag-ca","tag-canada","tag-cbs","tag-cbs-sports","tag-golf","tag-pga-tour","tag-sports
["GET
