Subaru Is Taking the SVX’s Flat-Six Racing in 2026 Subaru <\/p>\n
Subaru has long raced a BRZ-bodied car in the GT300 class of Japan’s Super GT championship, a program that is set to continue into 2026. In the past, the car was powered by a four-cylinder engine like the one used in the road car. This year, that is going to change in a very unusual way.<\/p>\n
Starting this season, Subaru is set to put a 3.0-liter flat-six in its top racing car. That engine on its own is not strange, particularly in a class where many other competitors use engines unrelated to a production car in competition. What makes the Subaru so strange is that this six-cylinder is based on an engine that is over 30 years old.<\/p>\n
The Subaru SVX grand tourer has been out of production since 1996, marking the end of production for the EG33 3.3-liter flat-six. Other flat-six Subaru engines have been built since, most notably the EZ36 sold in Subaru crossovers throughout the 2010s, but according to machine translations of both a Subaru press release<\/a> and multiple press conferences, it is the EG33-generation engine that is serving as the basis for Subaru’s new racing motor. In other words, Subaru is reviving an engine family that has been dormant for three decades.<\/p>\n It is an unusual choice, but not entirely without precedent. Mercedes-AMG, for instance, still uses a variant of the M159, the SLS-specific version of its naturally-aspirated 6.2-liter V-8, in its GT3 race cars. Porsche’s title-winning 963 prototype is powered by an engine<\/a> with roots in the Carrera GT, RS Spyder, 918 Hybrid, and another prototype racer that was canceled before it debuted. In the GT300 class where Subaru’s six-cylinder BRZ will compete, the closely related Toyota GR86 GT300<\/a> uses a racing version of the 2UR-GSE V-8 seen in the Lexus IS-F.<\/p>\n While Subaru is not the first brand to use an old road car engine in developing a powertrain for a newer racing machine, the long gap between the EG33’s retirement and its resurfacing in a new race car is more unique.
