The U.S. Supreme Court will not issue a ruling \u200don \u200bFriday in a major case testing the legality of President Donald Trump\u2019s sweeping global tariffs.<\/p>\n

The justices issued one ruling on Friday in a criminal case. The court does not announce in advance what cases will be decided.<\/p>\n

The \u200bTrump administration expects \u200dthe Supreme Court will rule in its \u200dfavour \u200bin litigation testing the legality of the president\u2019s sweeping global tariffs, but is \u2060still exploring what could be done if the court rules against it, White \u200cHouse \u200deconomic adviser Kevin \u200dHassett said on Friday.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur \u200cexpectation is that \u2060we\u2019re going to \u200bwin, and if we don\u2019t win, then we know that we\u2019ve got other tools \u200bthat we could use that get us to the same place,\u201d Hassett said in an \u2060interview on CNBC. He \u2060said the administration held a \u200ccall Thursday night with all the principals to discuss possible next steps. <\/p>\n

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Thursday said he was confident in the ability to reconstitute any lost tariff revenue by imposing duties under other legal authorities \u200dif the Supreme \u200bCourt rules against President Donald Trump\u2019s emergency tariffs, but a loss would undercut Trump\u2019s flexibility and leverage.<\/p>\n

Bessent, speaking at an Economic Club of Minnesota event at which he touted the benefits of the administration\u2019s economic agenda and discussed some of its plans in Venezuela following the removal of the South American country\u2019s leader, defended the tariffs under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act as bringing China, Mexico and Canada to the negotiating table to curb fentanyl trafficking.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat \u2060is not in doubt is our ability to continue collecting tariffs at roughly the same level in terms of overall revenue,\u201d Bessent said. \u201cWhat is in doubt, and it\u2019s a real change for the American people, was the President loses flexibility to use tariffs, both for national security, for negotiating leverage.\u201d<\/p>\n

The levies used under IEEPA have offered Trump significant clout, Bessent said, citing as an example his threat of 100-per-cent tariffs on Chinese imports in \u200cretaliation for its threat to put export \u200dcontrols on rare earths magnets critical to many U.S. manufacturing industries.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy phone started immediately ringing when he said we\u2019ll do 100-per-cent \u200dtariffs,\u201d Bessent said. \u201cSo he brought them to the table. That was a \u200clong way of saying we\u2019ll lose national security ability, flexibility.\u201d<\/p>\n

The U.S. President has continued to express concern about the possibility of losing the case. In a social media post on Jan. 2, Trump said a Supreme Court ruling against the tariffs would be a \u201cterrible blow\u201d to the United States.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause of Tariffs, our Country is financially, \u2060AND FROM A NATIONAL SECURITY STANDPOINT, FAR STRONGER AND MORE RESPECTED THAN EVER BEFORE,\u201d Trump said in another post on Monday.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

The U.S. Supreme Court is expected to issue rulings on Friday as it weighs cases with major implications both nationally and around the world including the legality of President Donald Trump\u2019s sweeping global tariffs.<\/p>\n

The court \u200dindicated on \u200bits website<\/a> on Tuesday that it could release decisions in argued cases when the justices take the bench during a scheduled sitting on Friday. The court does not announce ahead of time which rulings it intends to issue.<\/p>\n

The challenge to Mr. Trump\u2019s tariffs<\/a> is among the most closely watched of the cases awaiting decisions by the top U.S. judicial body that could \u2060impact the global economy and marks a major test of presidential powers. During arguments heard by the court on Nov. 5<\/a>, conservative and liberal justices appeared to cast doubt on the legality of the tariffs, which Mr. Trump imposed by invoking a 1977 law meant for use during national emergencies. The case involves appeals by Mr. Trump\u2019s administration after lower courts ruled that his unprecedented \u200cuse of that law exceeded \u200dhis authority.<\/p>\n

Mr. Trump \u200binvoked the International Emergency Economic Powers Act on goods imported from individual countries to address what he called a national emergency related to U.S. trade deficits, as well as on China, Canada and Mexico as economic leverage to curb the trafficking of the often-abused painkiller fentanyl and illicit drugs into the United States.<\/p>\n
