Winning an Oscar is the highest accolade any movie actor can achieve. So, there\u2019s an expectation in Hollywood that having \u201cAcademy Award-winner\u201d before your name automatically skyrockets your career \u2014 but that\u2019s not necessarily the case for everyone.<\/p>\n
Whether it\u2019s better roles and bigger paychecks, some Oscar wins completely revitalize actors’ careers. However, over the years, it\u2019s become equally common to see a sudden decline in people\u2019s work after their wins \u2014 so much so, they\u2019ve coined it the \u201cOscars curse<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n With all this in mind, Oscar-winning actors and filmmakers always face intense scrutiny over their career choices in the years following their wins, with immense pressure on the opportunities they pursue.<\/p>\n As you may know, Brendan\u2019s Academy Award win came after a long break from the spotlight during the 2000s and 2010s, and so, it was widely expected that his Oscar would mark the start of a major movie comeback. However, in an interview with Discussing Film<\/a> to promote his new film, Rental Family, Brendan said that landing top film roles isn\u2019t all that easy, even when you\u2019ve got an Oscar win to your name.<\/p>\n \u201cThe fallacy is that you have the pick of the litter [of roles]. It\u2019s not true, actually, because it depends on what\u2019s being made,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n Suggesting that the current landscape in Hollywood has led to a decline in high-quality film roles, Brendan said: \u201cWe\u2019re at a point in the industry right now where we\u2019re reckoning with, What is streaming? What is cinema? What is television?\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cHow we consume pop culture<\/a>, art, \u2018content\u2019\u2014 I mean, there\u2019s an ongoing debate about how we do this, and it\u2019s not unified yet,\u201d he continued, before taking a more optimistic stance. \u201cThe good news: Good work is good work. No one sets out to make a dud, necessarily, and you want to make the best you can do.\u201d<\/p>\n Finding strong lead roles in Hollywood is difficult for many stars, but it\u2019s undoubtedly more challenging for non-white actors, even those with Academy Awards<\/a>. For example, Lupita Nyong\u2019o won<\/a> the Best Supporting Actress Oscar in 2014 for her breakout role in Steve McQueen’s 12 Years a Slave, and since then, she\u2019s talked openly about the lack of diversity in the roles that are offered to her.<\/p>\n
