The Dallas Mavericks are likely to be without Anthony Davis for several weeks, at a minimum, after he suffered ligament damage in his left hand in Thursday\u2019s game against the Utah Jazz, a league source told The Athletic.<\/p>\n

In a statement, the team announced that Davis is \u201ccurrently seeking multiple opinions\u201d after medical imaging revealed the diagnosis. Davis is expected to meet with a hand specialist, the league source told The Athletic. It\u2019s unclear if Davis will need surgery but he is expected to miss extended time even if he decides a non-surgical route to recovery is best.<\/p>\n

Davis, 32, was injured Thursday while trying to prevent Utah Jazz forward Lauri Markkanen from driving to the basket. Davis\u2019 left hand got scrunched up against Markkanen\u2019s body. As Davis exited the floor, he doubled over in pain.<\/p>\n

Before Davis\u2019 latest injury, the Mavericks were actively exploring the trade market for him. The Athletic reported earlier this week<\/a> that the Atlanta Hawks and the Toronto Raptors were two of the teams that had registered interest in him. Davis\u2019 left hand injury reduces the odds the Mavericks are able to move him before Feb. 5, which could force Dallas to resume its efforts to trade him this summer.<\/p>\n

Davis, whom the Mavericks acquired in the Luka Don\u010di\u0107 trade last February, has played in 31 games in Dallas while missing 42 games. He missed close to six weeks last season with a left adductor strain, then was out for most of November of this season while he recovered from a left calf strain. He is owed $58.5 million next season and holds a $62.8 million player option in 2026-27.<\/p>\n

Even before Davis hurt his left hand, there were concerns throughout the league about his long history of durability issues. He has played in at least 70 games just once in the previous eight seasons.<\/p>\n

The Mavericks, who were forced to play the final 2:08 of Thursday\u2019s game without Davis, lost 116-114, falling to 14-24 this season. They are in 11th place in the Western Conference as the midpoint of the regular season approaches.
