The U.S.\u00a0needs to own\u00a0Greenland<\/a>\u00a0to prevent Russia or China from occupying it in the future,\u00a0President Donald Trump<\/a> said on Friday.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are going to do something on\u00a0Greenland\u00a0whether they like it or not. Because if we don\u2019t do it, Russia or China will take over\u00a0Greenland, and we\u2019re not going to have Russia or China as a neighbor,\u201d Trump told\u00a0reporters at the White House\u00a0while meeting with oil company executives.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would like to make a deal the easy way, but if we don\u2019t do it the easy way we\u2019re going to do it the hard way,\u201d he added, appearing to allude to potential military action.<\/p>\n

Trump said the U.S. must acquire\u00a0Greenland, even though it already has a military presence on the island under a 1951 agreement, because such deals are not enough to guarantee\u00a0Greenland\u2019s defense. The island of 57,000 people is an autonomous territory of the Kingdom of Denmark,<\/a> but the treaty allows the U.S. to expand its military presence as it sees fit.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou defend ownership. You don\u2019t defend leases. And we\u2019ll have to defend Greenland. If we don\u2019t do it, China or Russia will. Not going to happen,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n

Trump and White House officials have been discussing various plans to bring\u00a0Greenland\u00a0under U.S. control, including potential use of the U.S. military and\u00a0lump sum payments to\u00a0Greenlanders\u00a0as part of a bid to convince them to secede from Denmark and potentially join the U.S.<\/p>\n

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio told reporters and lawmakers this week that a purchase of Greenland was the top idea being considered.<\/p>\n

But Trump, when asked Friday how much money the U.S. would be willing to spend, said he\u2019s \u201cnot talking about money for Greenland yet,\u201d though he said that could be raised in the future.<\/p>\n

Leaders in Copenhagen and throughout Europe have reacted with disdain in recent days to comments by Trump and other White House officials asserting their right to\u00a0Greenland. The U.S. and Denmark are NATO allies bound by a mutual defense agreement.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, Britain and Denmark issued a joint statement, saying only Greenland and Denmark can decide matters regarding their relations.<\/p>\n

Foreign policy experts have said the U.S. won\u2019t gain any additional national security advantage through a takeover of Greenland compared to the existing treaty agreement and cooperation with NATO.<\/p>\n

They have warned forcing Greenland away from Denmark could \u201cpermanently\u201d rupture the western military alliance.<\/p>\n

Trump says he still supports NATO but added Friday that \u201cNATO has to understand\u201d his position on acquiring Greenland.<\/p>\n

Rubio is expected to meet next week with Danish officials to discuss Greenland.<\/p>\n

Trump, in a New York Times interview published Thursday, said he has to possess the entirety of Greenland instead of just expanding its presence under the existing treaty.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think that ownership gives you a thing that you can\u2019t do with, you\u2019re talking about a lease or a treaty. Ownership gives you things and elements that you can\u2019t get from just signing a document,\u201d Trump told the newspaper.<\/p>\n
