There was widespread<\/a> outrage<\/a> last week after Guido revealed<\/a> that the HMRC official leading the taxman\u2019s Inheritance Tax Analysis team was handed the \u2018Expert of the Year\u2019 Award \u201cfor my work in providing ministers with the analysis they needed to announce several major IHT reforms at last year\u2019s Autumn Budget, including restricting agricultural and business property reliefs and extending IHT to unspent pensions.\u201d Curiously James Mee\u2019s LinkedIn post boasting about this has been edited<\/a> and his account has been renamed James M<\/a>\u2026<\/p>\n Requests fired from Guido\u2019s FoI unit have revealed that HMRC\u2019s entire Inheritance Tax Analysis team is made up of \u201cfewer than five junior officials.\u201d In an agency of 66,000 staff\u2026<\/p>\n Former Tory Treasury minister John Glen said \u201cin every fiscal event I was exposed to this option was laid on the table \u2013 we said \u2018No thank you.\u2019\u201d The civil servants itching to get it over the line\u2026<\/p>\n It is no wonder that HMRC and the Treasury completely failed to co-ordinate with DEFRA, which has better data, in the execution of the policy.
