{"id":401283,"date":"2026-01-10T21:52:14","date_gmt":"2026-01-10T21:52:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/401283\/"},"modified":"2026-01-10T21:52:14","modified_gmt":"2026-01-10T21:52:14","slug":"nobody-saw-it-coming-former-ubisoft-worker-speaks-out-after-halifax-closure","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/401283\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Nobody saw it coming\u2019: Former Ubisoft worker speaks out after Halifax closure"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/70c8fc80.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"position:absolute;width:1px;height:1px\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"l-longform-article__p l-longform-article__content l-longform-article__content--narrow \">Jon Huffman is heartbroken over this week\u2019s announcement that Ubisoft Halifax will be closing up shop after 10 years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"l-longform-article__p l-longform-article__content l-longform-article__content--narrow \">The lead programmer began working at the studio four years ago and, alongside colleagues, was one of the faces behind popular mobile games, like Assassin\u2019s Creed Rebellion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"l-longform-article__p l-longform-article__content l-longform-article__content--narrow \">When staff were called into an impromptu meeting Wednesday morning to find the head of Ubisoft\u2019s mobile division waiting for them, he said they knew something big was happening.<\/p>\n<p class=\"l-longform-article__p l-longform-article__content l-longform-article__content--narrow \">\u201cNobody saw it coming,\u201d he told Global News one day after the meeting. \u201cIn fact, I don\u2019t know that our studio management saw it coming. They were just as devastated as we were.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"l-longform-article__p l-longform-article__content l-longform-article__content--narrow \">Huffman has become one of two spokespeople for the staff since <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/11603146\/ubisoft-halifax-office-closure-cost-cutting-layoffs\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ubisoft broke the news.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"l-longform-article__p l-longform-article__content l-longform-article__content--narrow \">\u201cSuddenly, you got people crying arm-in-arm. To go from the triumph of being recognized and certified as a union, to, less than four weeks later, finding out that our studio is being shut down? It\u2019s heartbreaking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"l-longform-article__p l-longform-article__content l-longform-article__content--narrow \">Employees at Ubisoft Halifax unionized in late December, forming the company\u2019s first-ever North American union.<\/p>\n<p class=\"l-longform-article__p l-longform-article__content l-longform-article__content--narrow \">\u201cLet me share a little bit of something with you, right? We voted to form our union last year in June, if I remember correctly.\u201d Huffman said. \u201cIt was six months to the day that we got certified, and the reason it took so long is because the company was challenging the inclusion of some of our members.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"l-longform-article__p l-longform-article__content l-longform-article__content--narrow \">He described going through a lengthy process of interviews and hearings, which proved stressful to the staff in question.<\/p>\n<p class=\"l-longform-article__p l-longform-article__content l-longform-article__content--narrow \">\u201cAnd suddenly, beginning of the week of December 18, we get the news that the company was dropping all of their challenges,\u201d Huffman said. \u201cSo, bing, bang, boom \u2014 votes counted. We find out we have a successful union vote \u2014 74 per cent of us came together and said \u2018yes.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"l-longform-article__p l-longform-article__content l-longform-article__content--narrow \">The employees joined CWA Canada local 30111, which represents workers at Bethesda Game Studios and the Montreal Gazette.<\/p>\n<p class=\"l-longform-article__p l-longform-article__content l-longform-article__content--narrow \">Originally, Huffman said staff viewed Ubisoft backing down as \u201cone hell of an early Christmas present.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"l-longform-article__p l-longform-article__content l-longform-article__content--narrow \">\u201cWe were, to say the least, jubilant,\u201d he recalled.<\/p>\n<p class=\"l-longform-article__p l-longform-article__content l-longform-article__content--narrow \">But that would all change the first week back to work after the holidays, when he said staff had the rug pulled out from under them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"l-longform-article__p l-longform-article__content l-longform-article__content--narrow \">\u201cWhat are you supposed to do, aside from sit there reeling?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n<p class=\"l-longform-article__p l-longform-article__content l-longform-article__content--narrow \">Ubisoft said this week that the staff\u2019s decision to unionize did not influence the greater company\u2019s conclusion to close the studio, but Huffman has his doubts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"l-longform-article__p l-longform-article__content l-longform-article__content--narrow \">\u201cThe timing is questionable to say least,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"l-longform-article__p l-longform-article__content l-longform-article__content--narrow \">In a statement made to Global News Thursday, Ubisoft PR manager Caroline Stelmach said, \u201cOver the past 24 months, Ubisoft has undertaken company-wide actions to streamline operations, improve efficiency, and reduce costs. As part of this, Ubisoft has made the difficult decision to close its Halifax studio. Seventy-one positions will be affected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"l-longform-article__p l-longform-article__content l-longform-article__content--narrow \">Adding, \u201cWe are committed to supporting all impacted team members during this transition with resources, including comprehensive severance packages and additional career assistance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"l-longform-article__p l-longform-article__content l-longform-article__content--narrow \">In her email, Stelmach also provided context for the closure, citing the increasing competitiveness of the gaming industry, requiring the company \u201cto focus on projects with the greatest potential for success.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"l-longform-article__p l-longform-article__content l-longform-article__content--narrow \">However, the Assassin\u2019s Creed franchise, which the Halifax team worked extensively on, has seen success in recent years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"l-longform-article__p l-longform-article__content l-longform-article__content--narrow \">According to <a href=\"https:\/\/staticctf.ubisoft.com\/8aefmxkxpxwl\/52w2Cas6xfQjegpCgP1SZC\/b38c338a1bf6f365849a50d2f182d061\/Ubisoft_FY26_H1_Earnings_PR_EN_vF.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ubisoft\u2019s half-year fiscal update<\/a> for 2025-26, revenue was up heading into year\u2019s end, with the company reporting 20.3 per cent net booking gains compared to the first half of 2024-25.<\/p>\n<p class=\"l-longform-article__p l-longform-article__content l-longform-article__content--narrow \">\u201cIn a highly competitive market, Ubisoft delivered net bookings above guidance, on the back of stronger-than-expected partnerships that underscore the appeal and reach of our brands,\u201d wrote Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot in the company\u2019s half-year report. \u201c(\u2026) The Assassin\u2019s Creed franchise exceeded our expectations, confirming its positive momentum and ability to engage players over time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"l-longform-article__p l-longform-article__content l-longform-article__content--narrow \">But regardless of which projects were viewed as top priority, Huffman said his team was adaptable and keen to work on anything.<\/p>\n<p class=\"l-longform-article__p l-longform-article__content l-longform-article__content--narrow \">\u201cWe were a very versatile team. We were able to pivot and tackle challenges across a variety of technologies and platforms. Most recently, we\u2019ve had a lot of people working on a PC title. We prided ourselves on our flexibility, and we enjoyed new challenges.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"l-longform-article__p l-longform-article__content l-longform-article__content--narrow \">An overall snapshot of Ubisoft\u2019s revenue over the past six fiscal years shows a series of financial losses and gains, many of which may be attributed to the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"l-longform-article__p l-longform-article__content l-longform-article__content--narrow \">While the company reported IFRS 15 sales at 2,223.8 million euros, with <a href=\"https:\/\/staticctf.ubisoft.com\/8aefmxkxpxwl\/6PPKXqYvN3egZulrVbn9QB\/60c0522438bcf6fc70d54e8cd92ff2e7\/Ubisoft_FY21_Earnings_PR_English_final.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">net bookings up 46.1 per cent<\/a> in 2020-2021, it also reported losses in 2024-25, with <a href=\"https:\/\/staticctf.ubisoft.com\/8aefmxkxpxwl\/75aGUbWM9kwnQj44Tr7d6H\/ce4ca047ddadf45cf1e98cea8d1d7a78\/Ubisoft_FY25_PR_English_vfinal.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">revenue dipping 17.5 per cent<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"l-longform-article__p l-longform-article__content l-longform-article__content--narrow \">Ubisoft is also in debt around <a href=\"https:\/\/staticctf.ubisoft.com\/8aefmxkxpxwl\/33qBiRpCj1Z9Ib5bbfbg5r\/0c7fff607779c63e137037bc5c95a000\/Ubisoft_H1_FY26_Slideshow_vF.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">1.15 billion euros<\/a>, as of the end of September 2025, that it incurred over the years due to underperforming game titles, such as Skull and Bones and Star Wars Outlaws.<\/p>\n<p class=\"l-longform-article__p l-longform-article__content l-longform-article__content--narrow \">However, according to Huffman, the company isn\u2019t in dire straits.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the end of the year [2025], Ubisoft closed a deal with Tencent and received a massive cash infusion,\u201d Huffman said, referring to the \u20ac1.16 billion partnership that establishes Vantage Studios as a subsidiary to oversee the Assassin\u2019s Creed, Rainbow Six and Far Cry franchises. \u201cThey made a deal to buy an IP and studio from Amazon in December. So obviously, they had the money kicking around.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"l-longform-article__p l-longform-article__content l-longform-article__content--narrow \">He said in 2025 the new Assassin\u2019s Creed game saw the franchise reach new heights, despite its high production cost.<\/p>\n<p class=\"l-longform-article__p l-longform-article__content l-longform-article__content--narrow \">\u201cAssassin\u2019s Creed Shadows is a phenomenal game, the major flagship that released in 2025. And it did quite well, right?\u201d Huffman said. \u201cTo me, Ubisoft is not a failing company. It\u2019s a company that is going through a transition. That\u2019s all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"l-longform-article__p l-longform-article__content l-longform-article__content--narrow \">Ubisoft was given substantial financial incentives to remain in Nova Scotia in order to help build and bolster a provincial gaming industry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"l-longform-article__p l-longform-article__content l-longform-article__content--narrow \">But that\u2019s at risk of crumbling with their decision to shutter the Halifax studio.<\/p>\n<p class=\"l-longform-article__p l-longform-article__content l-longform-article__content--narrow \">\u201cThe tax credit that is received by media companies in Nova Scotia is very generous. And Ubisoft has taken advantage of that as long as we\u2019ve been here, right?\u201d Huffman said. \u201cThere\u2019s a social contract that exists when a company goes and relies on the government to help subsidize their employees \u2014 and to take that and then cut and run is, frankly, insulting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"l-longform-article__p l-longform-article__content l-longform-article__content--narrow \">According to the premier\u2019s office, Ubisoft has earned $12,574,591 through Nova Scotia\u2019s Digital Media Tax Credit since 2017. Credits that can only be claimed after qualifying jobs and investments are made.<\/p>\n<p class=\"l-longform-article__p l-longform-article__content l-longform-article__content--narrow \">As laid out in the most recent <a href=\"https:\/\/notices.novascotia.ca\/files\/public-accounts\/2025\/pa-supplementary-2025.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">provincial public accounts report<\/a>, Ubisoft also received $26,484 in grant money from the Department of Labour, Skills and Immigration in the 2024-25 fiscal year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"l-longform-article__p l-longform-article__content l-longform-article__content--narrow \">The video game developer also saw $47,791 and $25,445 in provincial money come their way in 2023-24 and 2022-2023, respectively.<\/p>\n<p class=\"l-longform-article__p l-longform-article__content l-longform-article__content--narrow \">In a statement, the premier\u2019s office says, \u201cThe government is deeply concerned about the closure of Ubisoft\u2019s Halifax studio and the impact on the 71 Nova Scotians who have lost their jobs,\u201d adding, \u201cThis decision was made by the company \u2014 it was not a decision that required government approval.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"l-longform-article__p l-longform-article__content l-longform-article__content--narrow \">The government says Employment Nova Scotia has already reached out to the workers, and support is available through Nova Scotia Works to help individuals transition to new opportunities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"l-longform-article__p l-longform-article__content l-longform-article__content--narrow \">\u201cThe fact is, we can\u2019t grow our economy solely through government investment. We also need the government to make sure that the people that do the work of building new industry, that build a thriving economy, are protected and looked after,\u201d says Paul Wozney, MLA and labour critic for the NS NDP.<\/p>\n<p class=\"l-longform-article__p l-longform-article__content l-longform-article__content--narrow \">He says, following this loss in the local gaming industry, his party will be bringing forward legislation to protect workers\u2019 rights in Nova Scotia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"l-longform-article__p l-longform-article__content l-longform-article__content--narrow \">\u201cI don\u2019t have any smoking gun evidence to say that this is union busting. But this is hardly the first time a multinational corporation with fiscal issues has closed a location under the auspices of fiscal struggle,\u201d Wozney says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"l-longform-article__p l-longform-article__content l-longform-article__content--narrow \">\u201cWe certainly will be, again, bringing forward ideas and legislation in the session to come to challenge this government to step up and make that workers in Nova Scotia have the protections they deserve, including the right to unionize and seek representation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"l-longform-article__p l-longform-article__content l-longform-article__content--narrow \">In the wake of Ubisoft\u2019s decision to close the location at Halifax\u2019s Maritime Centre, Huffman said employees are left with limited options.<\/p>\n<p class=\"l-longform-article__p l-longform-article__content l-longform-article__content--narrow \">\u201cFirst and foremost, myself and other organizing members of our union are working closely with CWA Canada to make sure that everything that is going on is above board, right?\u201d He said. \u201cJob searching is in my future, but the industry here in Halifax has shrunk a lot over the past two years. So, with 71 people being out of work all at once, it\u2019ll be very difficult for our industry to absorb that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"l-longform-article__p l-longform-article__content l-longform-article__content--narrow \">Huffman says while many on his team will have to consider relocating, the hardest part of the studio closure has been coming to terms with not working together moving forward.<\/p>\n<p class=\"l-longform-article__p l-longform-article__content l-longform-article__content--narrow \">\u201cUbisoft has had its ups and downs over the years (\u2026) But Ubisoft Halifax was such a special place that there\u2019s no way I can\u2019t look back at it with pride,\u201d Huffman says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"l-longform-article__p l-longform-article__content l-longform-article__content--narrow \">\u201cWe were a team before; we\u2019re still a team now.
