It\u2019s touted as an \u201cexpress core workout,\u201d which means you won\u2019t have to spend too many minutes on the mat if you\u2019re in a rush.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"c105dfe5-9ca2-4355-9a8c-a9f649f98844-2\">\u201cThis 15-minute core workout combines elements of strength training and pilates to bring you a powerful flow that will challenge your strength, endurance and coordination,\u201d says Izzy, your Pilates instructor, who goes by <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@izzy.samuel\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@izzy.samuel\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Pilates By Izzy<\/a> on her channel.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">The routine focuses on long, layered sequences of movement to build endurance and strength, and suits anyone working at an intermediate level. If you feel neck or back pain at any point during your movement, please take a break.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Izzy advises against performing this routine if you are pregnant, have a heart condition, or have a current injury or existing health condition, as it may not be suitable for everyone. There\u2019s a gentle backbend here, too, similar to an upward dog, but you can bend your elbows or rest your forearms on the mat if you don\u2019t feel ready for it just yet.<\/p>\n<p>Izzy then guides you into the routine itself using your Pilates ball. Instructions and cues are clear, concise and connect breath and body very well; my gripe with some online home Pilates routines is a lack of signaling of the inhale and exhale in favor of upbeat music or on-screen cueing. Izzy doesn\u2019t do that; she will tell you exactly when to draw a breath and when to release in time with your movements, which will help you activate your stomach muscles and use your diaphragm properly.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p>Along with the brilliant cueing, Izzy moves slowly and with control to build tension \u2014 there\u2019s no opportunity to rush anything, which (over time) will increase the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tomsguide.com\/wellness\/fitness\/expert-trainers-say-the-mind-muscle-connection-is-crucial-for-building-strength-and-muscle-heres-why\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.tomsguide.com\/wellness\/fitness\/expert-trainers-say-the-mind-muscle-connection-is-crucial-for-building-strength-and-muscle-heres-why\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">mind-muscle connection<\/a>, which basically means strengthening the neural pathways between brain and muscle.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, you will feel the burn; that much is guaranteed.<\/p>\n<p id=\"7e458888-dc3f-43db-b551-21561528f676\">There aren\u2019t lots of exercises in this core routine, but you will spend longer on the ones you do as Izzy builds upon them. Pilates often involves layering exercises and high rep counts, which increases <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tomsguide.com\/features\/time-under-tension-what-is-it-and-could-it-help-you-grow-muscle\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.tomsguide.com\/features\/time-under-tension-what-is-it-and-could-it-help-you-grow-muscle\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">time under tension<\/a> and means your muscles work for longer, so that you benefit from intensity in a short time.<\/p>\n<p>It also means far more reps than you\u2019d find in a strength program, which challenges your endurance while teaching you to control your breath and body. Yes, you will feel the burn; that much is guaranteed \u2014 it\u2019s killer, and only takes 15 minutes, so it will be over before you know it.
