{"id":402310,"date":"2026-01-11T09:46:12","date_gmt":"2026-01-11T09:46:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/402310\/"},"modified":"2026-01-11T09:46:12","modified_gmt":"2026-01-11T09:46:12","slug":"for-cyclists-potholes-are-far-more-than-an-annoyance-british-cycling-welcomes-governments-new-pothole-traffic-light-ratings-showing-which-counties-are-fixing-potholes-effectively","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/402310\/","title":{"rendered":"For cyclists, potholes are far more than an annoyance&#8221;: British Cycling welcomes government&#8217;s new pothole traffic light ratings showing which counties &#8220;are fixing potholes effectively"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The government is hoping a new map showing how well local authorities are maintaining their roads and fixing potholes will hold poorly performing councils to account and drive improvement across England.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>British Cycling has welcomed the move and warned that, for cyclists, potholes &#8220;are far more than annoyance&#8221; and pose a real danger of serious injury or death.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" typeof=\"foaf:Image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/57395632212756033046076877099700230568778077n.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"lazyload\" itemprop=\"image\" width=\"970\" height=\"722\" alt=\"Pendle pothole\" title=\"Pendle pothole\"\/>Pendle pothole (credit: Cllr David Whipp\/Facebook)<\/p>\n<p>The government announced \u00a37.3 billion of funding for road maintenance at the Autumn Budget, a figure the Department for Transport says is a record, a new traffic light ratings system for England today launched to &#8220;let [the] public see which local highway authorities are fixing potholes effectively&#8221; and which are falling behind.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" typeof=\"foaf:Image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/unnamed-1_14.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"lazyload\" itemprop=\"image\" width=\"580\" height=\"820\" alt=\"Department for Transport traffic light ratings for potholes\" title=\"Department for Transport traffic light ratings for potholes\"\/>Department for Transport traffic light ratings for potholes (credit: Department for Transport)<\/p>\n<p>Areas such as Leeds, Manchester, Gloucestershire, Wiltshire, Essex and Worcestershire have, the Department for Transport says,\u00a0demonstrated &#8220;they are following best practice\u00a0such as\u00a0investing in more long-term preventative measures rather than just patching up potholes, while also\u00a0maintaining\u00a0good road conditions and\u00a0investing significantly into improving local\u00a0roads&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/road.cc\/content\/news\/cycling-lawyers-demand-action-pothole-crisis-315385\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">&gt;\u00a0&#8220;A stark postcode lottery&#8221;: Cycling lawyers demand action on pothole &#8220;crisis&#8221; putting cyclists in danger<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Most councils fall into the amber rating, which suggests Local Highways Authorities in those areas &#8220;showed some of these qualities with room for improvement\u00a0in individual areas&#8221;.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The worst performing areas, coloured in red such as Suffolk, Leicestershire and large parts of the north west of England\u00a0are &#8220;not yet meeting the expected standards\u00a0in one or several areas measured by the ratings&#8221;. This could include\u00a0the\u00a0current state of the roads, their\u00a0plans for preventing potholes\u00a0or investment into\u00a0maintaining their\u00a0local roads more\u00a0widely.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" typeof=\"foaf:Image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/ford-road-potholes-hinton-tass-whitby.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"lazyload\" itemprop=\"image\" width=\"970\" height=\"647\" alt=\"Ford Road Potholes in Hinton by Tass Whitby\" title=\"Ford Road Potholes in Hinton by Tass Whitby\"\/>Ford Road Potholes in Hinton by Tass Whitby (credit: road.cc)<\/p>\n<p>The DfT said any area rated red will receive &#8220;dedicated support to bring them in line with best practices, backed by \u00a3300,000 worth of expert planning and capability\u00a0assistance&#8221;. The government department also suggested that access to full future funding allocations &#8220;will be linked to performance, ensuring councils are encouraged to get on with the job and use taxpayer money efficiently&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>As mentioned earlier, British Cycling has welcomed the news and was involved in the announcement of the new ratings, alongside the AA, RAC and\u00a0Local Council Roads Innovation Group.<\/p>\n<p>Caroline Julian, the brand and engagement director at\u00a0British Cycling, said: &#8220;For cyclists, potholes are far more than an annoyance. One unexpected impact can cause a serious crash, life changing injury or, in the worst cases, a fatality. Safe riding depends on safe roads, and a smooth, well-maintained surface isn\u2019t a luxury for cyclists, it&#8217;s essential for their safety.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This new mapping tool is a step forward. It gives riders clear insight into how well their council is maintaining the routes they rely on every day, whilst holding decision makers to account.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" typeof=\"foaf:Image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/fy7lofgwcaivsjm.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"lazyload\" itemprop=\"image\" width=\"970\" height=\"728\" alt=\"Pothole\" title=\"Pothole\"\/>Pothole (credit: Malachy Quinn\/Twitter)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/road.cc\/content\/news\/county-tyrone-mega-pothole-filled-317135\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">&gt;\u00a0Farewell to the &#8220;potmonster&#8221; as Northern Ireland&#8217;s worst pothole finally filled in and new Road Maintenance Strategy announced<\/a><\/p>\n<p>AA president Edmund King suggested\u00a0research had shown fixing potholes was the top transport demand for 96 per cent of its members.<\/p>\n<p>Simon Williams, the head of policy at the RAC, said while &#8220;there are examples of good road maintenance practice taking place, this isn&#8217;t consistent across the country&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" typeof=\"foaf:Image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/img0726.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"lazyload\" itemprop=\"image\" width=\"970\" height=\"693\" alt=\"pothole 1 - VecchioJo\" title=\"pothole 1 - VecchioJo\"\/>pothole 1 &#8211; VecchioJo (credit: road.cc)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We hope this initiative, plus the promise of longer-term funding for councils to allow them to plan and carry out much-needed preventative maintenance, means we&#8217;re finally on the way to having smoother, better roads.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The announcement comes in the same week the government\u00a0unveiled\u00a0the first <a href=\"https:\/\/road.cc\/content\/news\/cycling-live-blog-7-january-2026-317521#live-blog-item-73179\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Road Safety Strategy<\/a> in over a decade, with the stated aim of\u00a0saving\u00a0thousands of lives on the nation&#8217;s roads by tackling drink driving, improving training for young drivers, and introducing mandatory eye tests for older motorists.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The content of the announcement included commitments to consult on reducing the drink-drive limit, as well as\u00a0introducing a three\u00a0or six-month\u00a0minimum learning period, to &#8220;give\u00a0learner\u00a0drivers more time to develop their skills in varied conditions such as night driving, adverse weather, and heavy traffic&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The DfT also announced a consultation on mandatory eyesight testing for those over 70, as well as developing options for cognitive testing too.
