How we test<\/p>\n
In the first stage of our selection process, we drew up a long list of products with the right nutritional credentials from the leading sports nutrition brands, some of which we knew could be relied upon from previous team experience, some of which were new to us. <\/p>\n
RW\u2019s highly experienced test team then used the products in training and racing over a variety of run types and distances, right up to ultra racing. We ate (and drank) up, then fed back on taste, ease of use, digestion and effectiveness, rating every product. Results were calculated from our combined feedback to give you the award winners featured here. <\/p>\n
Our testing also took place under the guidance of leading sports dieticians Jenead Ruddock and Dr Sinead Roberts, along with four other experts:<\/p>\n

Energy gels <\/p>\n
Best high-carb gel<\/p>\n
Still our go-to high-carb gel. The larger packs aren\u2019t the most compact, but each rip-top tube delivers a 40g payload of carbs, so you can carry fewer and still hit your hourly uptake. The 1:0.8 blend of maltodextrin to fructose slips down easily with no GI turmoil; just a stamina boost from fast-acting energy in three palatable flavours: neutral, orange, and strawberry and lime.<\/p>\n Best all-natural gel<\/p>\n Nature does raw energy well and this real-food gel blends pure Canadian maple syrup with sea salt. More like a syrup than a gel, these are easy enough to neck without water. They\u2019re sweet, but testers found the flavour \u2018cleaner and tastier than many maltodextrin gels. Each 36g compact tube provides 24g of carbs and 110mg of sodium, plus iron and manganese. <\/p>\n Best natural flavour gel<\/p>\n Maurten\u2019s gels kicked off the trend for flavourless fuelling and still set the standard. The Gel 100 provides 25g of carbs and the Gel 160 offers 40g, both from the same blend of fructose and glucose to maximise energy uptake and go easy on the gut. The smooth energy, jelly texture, neutral taste and portability all stood out in testing. <\/p>\n Best high-carb gel (highly commended)<\/p>\n Hate gloopy gels? The looser texture of this high-carb gel slips down easy, even without water. They\u2019re bulky, at 70g per gel, but with 40g of carbs from a 1:1 glucose to fructose mix, one pack just about replaces two standard gels. Each rip-top gel packs a gram of salt to replenish electrolytes and temper the sweetness. The neutral flavour was a winner with our test team on multiple-gel runs. <\/p>\n Best caffeine gel<\/p>\n Each large gel contains 100mg of caffeine from matcha and guarana to boost the performance benefits of its 40g of carbohydrates. There\u2019s a sour edge to the neutral flavour, but they successfully avoid the bitterness of other caffeine gels. Testers found the syrupy texture \u2018easy to get down and gentle on the stomach\u2019. No digestive disasters here \u2013 just rapid-acting energy. <\/p>\n Best neutral flavour gel (highly commended)<\/p>\n If there was an award for energy-to-weight ratio, these compact gels would win. Each 51g pack crams 30g of dual-source carbs into one of the smallest and most stash-able gels going. The easy-tear rip- top opening is a doddle on the run and the sweet but neutral flavour avoids taste fatigue, particularly handy if you\u2019re fuelling an ultramarathon. <\/p>\n Best gel pouch<\/p>\n With the carb equivalent of 4.5 standard gels in one resealable pouch, three PF90 pouches deliver enough energy for most runners to tackle a 4:30 marathon. The twisty lid lets you take on as much or as little as you want and the mild, neutral taste reduces flavour fatigue on longer efforts. Easy to swallow without water, too. <\/p>\n Best no-water gel<\/p>\n While some runners can train their systems to use more carbs, research suggests that most \u2018normal\u2019 runners\u2019 bodies can utilise around 60g per hour. Puresport\u2019s 30g dual-carb gels lean into those uptake rates with a simple message: take one gel every 30 minutes. Each gel uses a 1:0.8 glucose-to-fructose ratio, with a palatable loose texture that works water-free. Another benefit is the fresh berry flavour. <\/p>\n Best gel refills<\/p>\n Sadly, not enough brands offer refill options, but High5\u2019s bulk-buy 550g gel bottle stood out in testing as a simple solution to cut cost and waste. Each dispenser bottle contains 13 High 5 40g gels (315g carbs), which decant easily into washable soft flasks \u2013 the smaller one carries 150g of gel (69g carbs).<\/p>\n Best all-natural gel (highly commended)<\/p>\n Now 20% Off<\/p>\n You\u2019ll need to be a fan of the sticky stuff to enjoy the 22g natural carb hit in these manuka gels. The glucose and fructose in the honey packs a similar energy payload to traditional gels, with a smooth texture and added electrolytes. One of the few gels you\u2019d happily swallow when you\u2019re not running; testers found \u2018the tethered rip top excellent for avoiding litter, too\u2019. <\/p>\n Best no-water gel (highly commended)<\/p>\n If you find standard thicker gels hard to swallow and stomach, these might be the solution. Literally. The higher-fluid content makes them bulky for the 22g carb payload, but it\u2019s a happy trade-off for the race-day freedom of a gel you can sink in seconds without water. The cyclodextrin-based carbs deliver a slower, smoother energy release and testers loved the fresh watermelon flavour. <\/p>\n Best caffeine gel (highly commended)<\/p>\n Another antidote to gloop, these all-natural nectars boast an almost-liquid consistency. The 22g carb hit squeezes into one of the most portable gel packets around, with 75mg of slow-acting caffeine from guarana, and Himalayan pink salt to replace lost electrolytes. Energy comes from date nectar, brown rice and maple syrups, and our testers enjoyed the \u2018smooth coffee-caramel flavour\u2019.<\/p>\n Energy bars and chews<\/p>\n Best energy bar<\/p>\n Great for a pre-run energy top-up, or a mid-ultra texture change, this turbocharged rice crispy cake crams 50g of chewy, crunchy carbs into a really light bar. The team rated all the flavours, but the date, almond and sea salt combination stood out for being sweet with a welcome salty edge. A proper mid-run treat for fuelling when you can drop the pace.<\/p>\n Best energy bar (highly commended)<\/p>\n Delivering 40g of carbs in two blocks makes it easy to tailor your uptake. The combination of oats and rice creates a more solid, chewy texture and it\u2019s a bit dense to eat on the move unless you seriously drop the pace. But in testing they worked brilliantly as a pre-marathon or ultra top-up in the 90 minutes leading up to go time. <\/p>\n Best energy bar (highly commended)<\/p>\n The mix of puffed white rice, organic dates and honey creates a chocolate crispy-style bar that feels \u2013 and tastes \u2013 a bit like you made it at home. Each 50g bar packs 40g of carbs and an electrolyte mix of 400mg of sodium, 180mg of potassium and 45mg of magnesium. Crunchy, chewy and spot on for a texture change from gels and chews. <\/p>\n Best energy bar (highly commended)<\/p>\n An excellent alternative to rice crispy or gummy-style chew bars, Voom\u2019s fruit-flavoured Pocket Rockets have an almost fudgy texture that melts in the mouth or breaks down with less chewing. Each bar contains 45g of carbs, plus 120mg of electrolytes and breaks easily into four chunks for small, frequent top-ups. <\/p>\n Best energy chew<\/p>\n These soft jelly chews are flavoured with real fruit for a sweet, zingy energy hit. Each chew contains 4g of dual-source carbs, with a pocketable 10-pack delivering a 40g total carb load. You need to eat a fistful to get the kick of an average gel, but they\u2019re fantastic for little-and-often top-ups and a welcome change of texture when fuelling for the long haul. <\/p>\n Best energy chew (highly commended)<\/p>\n Harnessing the natural gut-settling powers of root ginger, these are great for ultras where GI issues can kick hard. The five little cubes of crystallised ginger per pack deliver a combined 24g of carbs and the fiery, fruity flavours mix heat, sweet and zing, which is great for a palate gear-change deep into day-long runs. <\/p>\n Best energy chew (highly commended)<\/p>\n While some energy chews are a serious jaw workout, these stood out for their soft, easy-chomp texture. The tiny stick bars are compact and easy to split into three chunks. Or you can chow in one for a gel-size 23g hit of carbs and added electrolytes. The strawberry and apple flavours taste pleasingly natural, with a zing to offset the sweetness.<\/p>\n Best energy chew (highly commended)<\/p>\n Originally made for cyclists to stick in their jerseys, the soft, lightly powdered blocks work well for runners on long, slow efforts when you\u2019re wearing a pack or belt, moving at intensities low enough to chew. The texture makes them easy to scoff, while two chews pack 30g carbs. Testers loved \u2018the sharper edge\u2019 of the tart cherry flavour. <\/p>\n Carb drinks <\/p>\n Best high-carb drink powder<\/p>\n Easy to open and pour, so all your powder goes in the bottle, not the floor or your hands. Each 95g sachet contains 90g of unflavoured carbs with a 1:0.8g ratio of maltodextrin and fructose, plus 3g of added L-glutamine to help fend off fatigue. It mixes well and the big energy hit is a great pre-race fuel-tank filler. <\/p>\n Best caffeine drink powder<\/p>\n A caffeinated alternative to Maurten\u2019s classic carb formula that turns to gel in the stomach for easier absorption. The new-formula has been tweaked to be easier to drink, but still provides 100mg of caffeine to turbocharge the benefits of its huge 80g hit of carbs per 500ml. That caffeine can help reduce perception of effort. <\/p>\n Best natural carb drink powder<\/p>\n This natural all-in-one powder fuel mix delivers up to 100g of carbs per 750ml bottle, though you can easily tweak the dose to fit the effort ahead. The fresh, fruity, tropical taste comes from real pineapple, baobab and lemon, and there\u2019s Himalayan pink salt to replenish lost sodium. But what really impressed the test team was the \u2018smooth and even\u2019 energy supply. <\/p>\n Highly commended<\/p>\n Made from freeze-dried real fruit, dried coconut water and Himalayan pink salt, they\u2019re clean, fresh and not overly sweet, in bright flavours such as mango and passion fruit. The 22g carb kick isn\u2019t the most potent, but for a convenient mix of energy and electrolytes, they\u2019re some of the best carb drinks we\u2019ve tasted. <\/p>\n Electrolytes<\/p>\n Best electrolyte tablets<\/p>\n Informed Sport- certified and ticking both the convenience and taste boxes, these tablets are easy to carry, dissolve rapidly and have a pleasantly fresh flavour. The amounts and ratios of the electrolytes \u2013 sodium, calcium, magnesium and potassium \u2013 sit within the range that\u2019s recommended in sports hydration and these also contain a shot of vitamins.<\/p>\n Best electrolyte tablets (highly commended)<\/p>\n These tablets are convenient to carry, dissolve rapidly and aren\u2019t too sweet, making them palatable even under fatigue, when sweet, grainy drinks can be hard to stomach. The ingredients list is short and focused on what\u2019s relevant to hydration, and the amounts and ratios of electrolytes are within recommended ranges. They\u2019re also Informed Sport-certified.<\/p>\n Best electrolytes for easy personalisation<\/p>\n The powder form makes it easy to vary your dose and personalise \u2013 adding more for a salty sweater, for example. It also contains a low concentration of carbs, which may help the rapid absorption of electrolytes into the body \u2013 great when you need to rehydrate quickly. Like the Science in Sport tabs it\u2019s Informed Sport-certified and contains vitamins. <\/p>\n Best for everyday hydration<\/p>\n These vegan sachets contain all your essential electrolytes, along with micronutrients for maintaining health. Where some electrolyte products\u2019 high-sugar content isn\u2019t suited to being taken outside of exercise, these Informed Sport-certified sachets, sweetened with natural, plant-based stevia leaf extract, stand out. From Himalayan Lime to Lychee, the flavour choices are also on point for everyday supping. <\/p>\n Protein bars<\/p>\n Best protein bar<\/p>\n Now 50% Off<\/p>\n It\u2019s rare to find a protein bar that is Informed Sport-approved, but this bucks the trend; the bar has undergone rigorous testing by a world-class sports anti-doping lab. With a light caramel flavour, each bar packs 21g of protein, 7.8g of gut-friendly fibre and only 1g of naturally occurring sugar. A great option for all and a real winner for athletes with a plant-based diet. <\/p>\n Best protein bar (highly commended)<\/p>\n Another excellent plant-based bar that works well whatever diet you follow. The light vanilla fudge taste isn\u2019t overpowering, which is very welcome with the heftier 64g bar size. A great choice even if you aren\u2019t plant-based (although it is approved as vegan by the Vegetarian Society). Each bar packs 21g of muscle-repairing protein, while being very low in added sugar. <\/p>\n Best protein bar (highly commended)<\/p>\n With just over 9g of protein per bar, this doesn\u2019t fall into the high-protein category per se, but earns a spot for its extra nutritional offerings. The smaller 40g bar also packs a whopping 8g of fibre, with 10 plant-based ingredients, including wholegrain oats, dates, pumpkin seeds, carrots and extra-virgin olive oil \u2013 and zero artificial ingredients. A tasty, nutritionally dense post-workout snack. <\/p>\n Protein powder<\/p>\n Best protein powder<\/p>\n Trusted by pro athletes thanks to its Informed Sport batch testing \u2013 which verifies that products don\u2019t contain banned substances \u2013 each 30g serving provides 23g of protein and 5.5g of BCAAs, supporting recovery and repair. Flavours are smooth and the powder mixes easily without clumping. The relatively high cost per serving is worth it for peace of mind and performance creds.<\/p>\n Best vegan protein powder<\/p>\n Informed Sport- accredited, this vegan blend provides 30g of protein per 40g serving from pea, brown rice and pumpkin seed, plus curcumin and digestive enzymes. Performance-driven, with a complete amino acid profile, it mixes smoothly and tastes great, even with water. Our judges felt the strong nutritional profile and certification justified the higher cost per serving. <\/p>\n Best clear protein powder<\/p>\n This one has a juice-like consistency as opposed to the thicker, milkshake- style consistency of traditional whey shakes.
