Known by Oregon Ducks fans as \u201cGOAT,\u201d Ionescu played at Oregon from 2016-2020 and was part of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/ducks\/2020\/03\/theres-always-going-to-be-a-little-hole-in-my-heart-oregon-womens-basketball-coping-with-reality-of-forever-unfinished-business.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/ducks\/2020\/03\/theres-always-going-to-be-a-little-hole-in-my-heart-oregon-womens-basketball-coping-with-reality-of-forever-unfinished-business.html\">the 2020 team that looked destined to win the NCAA Championship<\/a> before COVID-19 ended the season prematurely. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"MBPNPRILVRDH3MSNSY7QZ3FP5Y\">Ionescu is the NCAA\u2019s all-time leader in triple-doubles, was a three-time Pac-12 Player of the Year and thrust the Ducks into the national spotlight. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/ducks\/2020\/04\/sabrina-ionescu-drafted-by-new-york-liberty-with-no-1-pick-in-wnba-draft.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/ducks\/2020\/04\/sabrina-ionescu-drafted-by-new-york-liberty-with-no-1-pick-in-wnba-draft.html\">She was taken No. 1 overall by the Liberty<\/a> in 2020 and has since been a four-time All-Star and led the Liberty to a WNBA Championship in 2024. <\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Oregon vs. Arizona at Pac-12 women's basketball tournament\" class=\"article__image-content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/HRGKQJ35XVDZ5B54MRAW5WYP5Q.JPG\"  \/>Oregon&#8217;s Satou Sabally shoots before the No. 1 seed Oregon Ducks face the No. 4 seed Arizona Wildcats in the semifinals of the Pac-12 women&#8217;s basketball tournament on Saturday, March 7, 2020, at Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. One year Ionescu\u2019s junior, Sabally was known as \u201cThe Unicorn\u201d due to her ability to move like a guard despite standing at 6-foot-4. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"MYWKVB3T2JHQPMFUJHTIIZLY7A\">Sabally was a two-time All Pac-12 selection and a second team All-American in 2020. She was taken No. 2 in the 2020 WNBA Draft by the Dallas Wings and has since been a three-time WNBA All-Star. While the two played at Oregon together, they never played on the same team due to Nyara Sabally missing the 2018-2019 and 2019-2020 seasons with knee injuries. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"7J242N2YQRHMTDCUMTGXCUPQKI\">Sabally was able to return in the 2020-2021 season and was instantly a standout post presence. She was a two-time All-Pac-12 selection and was taken with the fifth overall pick in the 2022 WNBA Draft by the Liberty. Sabally was a key contributor in the Liberty\u2019s WNBA Championship run in 2024, scoring 13 points with seven rebounds in the decisive game five. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"RNTUBR7PVFFPVPJGKQ36PYQ52U\">Sabally was born in Bandon, making her the only current WNBA player born in the Beaver State. <\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Cameron Brink\" class=\"article__image-content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/4VPJVNNTWRF2TG5OYCECRSBZK4.jpeg\"  \/>Cameron Brink of Mountainside (photo by Serena Morones)Cameron Brink, Los Angeles Sparks <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"45YNMFWUCNBFLPUQTIGI5THNZQ\">Brink was one of the most storied high school basketball players ever to come out of Oregon. Brink played for Southridge and helped lead the Skyhawks to Class 6A state championships in 2017 and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/highschoolsports\/article\/southridge-makes-a-case-as-an-all-time-great-after-silencing-benson-46-27-in-girls-6a-championship-game\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/highschoolsports\/article\/southridge-makes-a-case-as-an-all-time-great-after-silencing-benson-46-27-in-girls-6a-championship-game\/\">2018<\/a>, and finishing as the runner-up in 2019. She was also a part of the 2019-20 Mountainside team, but the season was ended early due to COVID-19. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"EBRDABEEYNEZ5DVNMQ6I4SISPE\">Brink ended her high school career with 1,909 career points and 1,209 rebounds. She was an All-American in 2020 and was named the Oregon Gatorade Player of the Year in 2018 and 2019. She went on to play for Stanford where she helped the Cardinal win the 2021 NCAA Championship. She joined the Ducks in 2020 and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/ducks\/2021\/10\/sabrina-lite-oregon-coach-kelly-graves-puts-te-hina-paopao-on-that-same-trajectory-as-former-duck-great.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/ducks\/2021\/10\/sabrina-lite-oregon-coach-kelly-graves-puts-te-hina-paopao-on-that-same-trajectory-as-former-duck-great.html\">was considered as a potential successor to Ionescu<\/a>, but the Ducks were unable to return to the level of play they had seen in the previous couple of years. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"DXGV6WXU2FHARFWPNC3DZ6USHU\">Paopao played well for the Ducks and was twice named to the All-Pac-12 Team (2021 and 2022). Sean Meagher\/StaffNate Tibbetts, Phoenix Mercury <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"NS3U7SUCINBNDNTHIUOP74VZQM\">The Mercury\u2019s head coach is perhaps best known for his time as an assistant coach for the Portland Trail Blazers from 2013 to 2021 and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/blazers\/2013\/05\/trail_blazers_new_assistant_nate_tibbetts_gets_an.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/blazers\/2013\/05\/trail_blazers_new_assistant_nate_tibbetts_gets_an.html\">was hired on his birthday by former Blazers coach Terry Stotts<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"2D4RJ47SGJDKLEL2ZKA2ZSJWB4\">Tibbetts eventually left Portland in 2021 to become an assistant for the Orlando Magic. Powell started her WNBA career in 1999 when she was drafted by the Orlando Miracle, but before that she spent 1997 and 1998 as the starting point guard for the Portland Power. <\/p>\n<p>Mitch Thompson, Seattle Storm <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"LTRKURDXWRHBLNE5RIC5TGYU7E\">Thompson was hired by the Storm in 2025 (and also coaches in the Unrivaled league), but he has deep roots in Oregon. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"K5DFRQ3G5ZFKLHJUTZDP3P7MFY\">Thompson is from Hermiston and attended Oregon State. Fresh out of college, Thompson took over as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/highschoolsports\/article\/irrigon-boys-coach-mitch-thompson-making-most-of-short-coaching-career-begins-with-a-state-championship\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/highschoolsports\/article\/irrigon-boys-coach-mitch-thompson-making-most-of-short-coaching-career-begins-with-a-state-championship\/\">head coach at Irrigon<\/a> and helped lead the Knights to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/highschoolsports\/article\/its-another-title-for-the-irrigon-knights-who-take-down-toledo-65-53-in-final-2a-boys-basketball-championship-recap\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/highschoolsports\/article\/its-another-title-for-the-irrigon-knights-who-take-down-toledo-65-53-in-final-2a-boys-basketball-championship-recap\/\">Class 2A state championship in 2015<\/a>.
