The San Francisco Giants<\/a> this offseason had the goal of adding to their starting rotation and upgrading their outfield, if possible, and adding a new second baseman.<\/p>\n

While they’ve addressed their rotation with the additions of Tyler Mahle and Adrian Houser, the Giants are still scouring the market for the right infield addition.<\/p>\n

Fortunately, as a consequence of the Alex Bregman Chicago Cubs<\/a> deal, the market for infielders, according to MLB insider Jon Morosi<\/a>, is expected to heat up.<\/p>\n

Giants get good news amid Bregman-Cubs deal<\/p>\n

“Alex Bregman to the Cubs has a number of implications,” Morosi writes. “Shaw or Hoerner being in play could jolt what’s become a sleepy Brendan Donovan trade market. The Giants and Mariners are among the teams that have spoken with the Cardinals on Donovan.”<\/p>\n

Thanks to Bregman signing with the Cubs on a huge $175 million, five-year deal, the Giants now have a better chance to trade for an infielder this winter.<\/p>\n

Brendan Donovan trade talks had ground to a screeching halt recently, and while the St. Louis Cardinals<\/a> weren’t shutting down talks, the traction previously gained by the Giants was lost.<\/p>\n

But now, with Matt Shaw and Nico Hoerner potentially becoming trade candidates, the trade market for infielders might pick back up.<\/p>\n

And for the Giants, who were one of two teams showing the most interest in Donovan, this is some very welcome news.<\/p>\n

The top second baseman on the trade market now that Ketel Marte isn’t an option, Donovan is sure to draw serious interest from the Giants, Seattle Mariners<\/a>, and now the Boston Red Sox<\/a> since they lost out on Bregman.<\/p>\n

For Buster Posey and the Giants, this trade market picking up is good news. While things have quieted down for a few weeks, this Bregman contract should provide the necessary spark to heat the stove back up.<\/p>\n

Whether it’s one of the now-expendable Cubs infielders or Donovan, the Giants might be getting a lot closer to a new infield addition this winter thanks to Bregman’s deal.<\/p>\n
