The idea of cyclo-cross as an Olympic discipline has been circulating for years. But, it seems the debate is far from settled. While the UCI and World Athletics are actively lobbying the IOC to include the sport in the Winter Games, not all riders are convinced the move makes sense.<\/p>\n
One of those who questions its place is Thibau Nys. In an interview with Sporza<\/a>, the Baloise Trek Lions rider expressed concern that the Olympic push feels artificial rather than organic. \u201cIt feels very forced,\u201d Nys said.<\/p>\n On \u2018cross at the Games<\/p>\n Cyclocross and cross-country running are being proposed as winter sports due to their seasonal calendars. The IOC has also previously indicated openness to expanding the Winter Olympic program. UCI president David Lappartient has supported the push for cyclo-cross to be included at the 2030 Winter Olympics in the French Alps.<\/p>\n Still, Nys is unsure whether Olympic inclusion would actually improve the sport. He pointed out that the sport already thrives in Belgium, with strong traditions, passionate fans, and a well-established structure. \u201cWe are very big here, and it has worked perfectly this way for years,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n Papa Nys, however\u2026<\/p>\n His father, has a quite different take.Former world champion Sven Nys has been a fan for several years about the prospect of \u2018cross making its debut in the Winter Olympics. \u201cIf our sport becomes an Olympic sport, the sky\u2019s the limit,\u201d he said. \u201cThen all the federations will wake up and put money into cyclocross again. Now that\u2019s only in Belgium and the Netherlands.\u201d<\/p>\n Rather than chasing Olympic status, Nys believes the sport should focus on solving issues closer to home. According to him, strengthening what already exists may be more valuable than using the Games as a tool for growth.<\/p>\n Mvdp after the snowy day at the office<\/p>\n After a very snowy (and slippery) Zilvermeercross in Mol, world champion Mathieu van der Poel was asked his thoughts about the inclusion at the Games. \u201cOf course I would welcome it,\u201d Van der Poel said, according to WielerFlits.<\/a> \u201cBut it\u2019s not a choice I can make.\u201d<\/p>\n Thibau Nys isn\u2019t the only one that was on the fence though.<\/p>\n That\u2019s why the late Gian Franco Kasper, the former president of the International Ski Federation and a member of the IOC, weighed in when asked. In theory, every sport on the Winter Olympic program must be contested on snow or ice, which was why he\u2026well, was not a fan.<\/p>\n
