Alphabet Inc.<\/a> and Apple<\/a> have announced a partnership to use Google’s AI technology to power the foundation of Apple’s Intelligence and Siri<\/a> in the upcoming year.<\/p>\n

The multi-year collaboration will have Apple’s “Foundation Model” be based on Google’s Gemini<\/a> models and cloud technology, according to the announcement.<\/a><\/p>\n

“After careful evaluation, Apple determined that Google’s AI technology provides the most capable foundation for Apple Foundation Models and is excited about the innovative new experiences it will unlock for Apple users,” a joint statement from Google and Apple reads. “Apple Intelligence will continue to run on Apple devices and Private Cloud Compute, while maintaining Apple’s industry-leading privacy standards.”<\/p>\n

Speculation about a potential partnership had been the topic of AI discussions after\u00a0Bloomberg reported<\/a>\u00a0in August that Apple had entered into talks with Google about using Gemini to revamp Siri.<\/p>\n

USA TODAY reached out to Apple for details regarding the agreement, including how much this new multi-year deal will cost Apple. Details remain unclear; Apple did not respond to USA TODAY’s questions at the time of publication.<\/p>\n

This news broke shortly after Google was announced as the fourth company to reach a $4 trillion market cap<\/a>. Much of this growth stems from Google’s emergence as a leading player in <\/a>AI<\/a>, particularly after the company released its Gemini 3 AI model in late 2025.<\/p>\n

For years, Apple has taken a back seat in the AI race, as companies like Google<\/a>, OpenAI<\/a>, and Perplexity<\/a> have fought to make new advances in artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n

In 2024, Apple announced that it would integrate OpenAI’s ChatGPT<\/a> into its iOS platform, allowing customers to use ChatGPT\u2019s capabilities and tools on their devices.<\/p>\n

It’s unclear whether this new partnership with Google will affect Apple’s prior agreement with OpenAI.<\/p>\n
