But if you\u2019re mostly sedentary, it may not be the best snack choice, says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eatingwell.com\/author\/lauren-manaker\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lauren Manaker, M.S., RDN<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_12-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> The Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends keeping calories from added sugars to\u00a0 less than 10% of your total daily intake. \u201cIt may also be helpful to know that 4 grams of sugar is roughly about 1 teaspoon and the limit can be about 6 to 9 teaspoons a day,\u201d adds Sauceda.\n<\/p>\n<p>  It\u2019s High in Calories and Easy to Overeat  <\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_17-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Trail mix is one of those foods that\u2019s very easy to snack on mindlessly. You start with a handful, then grab another and another\u2014often eating way more than you planned.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_19-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> \u201cWhen it\u2019s loaded with sweet or salty ingredients, it\u2019s easy to lose track of how much you\u2019ve eaten,\u201d says Manaker.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_21-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Nuts are highly nutritious and offer many health benefits, including <a class=\"recommendation-inline-link-ai\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eatingwell.com\/surprising-nutrient-for-better-heart-health-8686588\" link-destination-recommendation-ai=\"true\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">heart-healthy monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats<\/a>\u2014but they can also be high in calories and are easy to overeat.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_23-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> \u201cAdditionally, there are other goodies that are almost always added to trail mixes, such as dried fruits, chocolate chips, coconut, oats, seeds, granola, dry cereals, pretzels and M&amp;M\u2019s,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dietitianmelissa.com\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Melissa Hooper, M.S., RDN<\/a>. \u201cAlthough these taste good and it feels like a healthier snack since it\u2019s not a candy bar or a cookie, [trail mix] can contain an average of 350 calories for \u00bd cup.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>  It\u2019s Not Actually a Meal  <\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_26-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Trail mix often contains fiber, protein and healthy fats, making it a <a class=\"recommendation-inline-link-ai\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eatingwell.com\/article\/7891453\/best-healthy-snacks-according-to-dietitians\/\" link-destination-recommendation-ai=\"true\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">well-rounded, nutritious snack<\/a>\u2014albeit one that\u2019s potentially high in calories. But, let\u2019s be real: it\u2019s not a meal and won\u2019t provide you with the same nutrients as a balanced lunch or dinner.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_28-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> \u201cSince it\u2019s calorie-dense, it might be a bit heavier than your normal snack, which means it can easily tide you over until your next meal,\u201d Sauceda says. \u201cBut it shouldn\u2019t be your meal.\u201d\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>  How to Eat Trail Mix More Mindfully  <\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_33-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Before you swear off trail mix altogether, it can still fit into a healthy eating pattern. \u201cTrail mix is still a great option as a <a class=\"recommendation-inline-link-ai\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eatingwell.com\/6-bad-snacks-that-actually-support-weight-loss-11684203\" link-destination-recommendation-ai=\"true\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">weight-loss snack<\/a>; you just need to be mindful of what\u2019s in it and how much you eat,\u201d explains Sauceda.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_35-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Here are some tips for eating it more mindfully:\n<\/p>\n<p> Read the Nutrition Label and Ingredients. Choose a trail mix with minimal added sugars. This might mean skipping options with candy, yogurt-coated snacks or sweetened dried fruit. \u201cInstead, opt for mixes with unsweetened dried fruits, raw or roasted nuts, seeds and dark chocolate,\u201d says Manaker.\u00a0Eat with Intention. Mindful eating can feel challenging in a world where we\u2019re surrounded by screens and notifications, but paying attention to what you\u2019re eating can make a big difference and prevent overeating. \u201cSavor the flavors and textures instead of eating it mindlessly while working or watching TV,\u201d Manaker says.\u00a0Watch Your Portions. Instead of eating straight from the bag, measure out a serving size, which Manaker says is usually about \u00bc cup. \u201cI recommend preportioning serving sizes in snack-sized plastic bags as soon as you bring it home from the store, so each bag is ready for grab and go,\u201d adds Hooper.Make Your Own. Trail mix is easy to make at home, requires few ingredients and can be customized to the flavors you love, says Hooper.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>  Healthier Snack Options  <\/p>\n<p>Homemade Energy Bites: Made with ingredients like nut butter, whole grains, nuts and dried fruit, these keep you full and are easy to make ahead of time and portion.
