Investors anxious over make-or-break fight for the Fed<\/a><\/p>\nOverseas, the pan-European STOXX 600 was edged up 0.07 per cent. Britain\u2019s FTSE 100 was up 0.07 per cent, Germany\u2019s DAX rose 0.38 per cent and France\u2019s CAC 40 climbed 0.11 per cent.<\/p>\n
In Asia, Japanese markets were closed, while Hong Kong\u2019s Hang Seng gained 1.44 per cent.<\/p>\n
Commodities<\/p>\n
Oil prices dipped after Iran said it had total \u200bcontrol following \u200bthe biggest anti-government demonstrations in years, easing some \u200dconcerns over supply from the OPEC producer, while investors also weighed efforts to resume oil exports from Venezuela.<\/p>\n
Brent crude futures lost 0.2 per cent to trade at US$63.19 a barrel. West Texas Intermediate crude (WTI) was down 0.3 per cent to US$58.93.<\/p>\n
While a premium \u2060has formed in oil prices in recent days, the market is still underestimating the geopolitical risk \u200bfrom a wider Iran conflict that may affect oil shipments in the Strait of Hormuz, Saul Kavonic, head of energy research at MST Marquee.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe market is saying, \u2018Show me the disruption to supply\u2019, before materially responding,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
In other commodities, spot gold\u00a0jumped 1.7 per cent to US$4,584.12 \u200dan ounce after hitting a record high of $4,600.33 earlier in the day. U.S. gold futures for February delivery gained 2.1 per cent to US$4,595.<\/p>\n
Currencies and bonds<\/p>\n
The Canadian dollar strengthened against its U.S. counterpart.<\/p>\n
The day range on the loonie was 71.84 US cents to 72.11 US cents in early trading. The Canadian dollar was down about 0.77 per cent against the greenback over the past month. <\/p>\n
The U.S. dollar index, which weighs the greenback against a group of currencies, dropped 0.39 per cent to 98.75. <\/p>\n
The euro rose 0.43 per cent to US$1.1686. The British pound gained 0.53 per cent to US$1.3470. <\/p>\n
In bonds, the yield on the U.S. 10-year note was last up at 4.188 per cent.<\/p>\n
