The biggest story in Hollywood and one of the messiest got a few zingers during the Golden Globes ceremony Sunday as host Nikki Glaser kicked off her opening monologue<\/a> with a reference to the biggest takeover target in years. \u201cWe\u2019ll start the bidding for Warner Bros at five dollars \u2014 do I hear five dollars?\u201d the comedian joked.<\/p>\n

Dinging David Ellison\u2019s Paramount Skydance, the owner of the Globes\u2019 broadcast network CBS since August who is in the midst of a fight for WBD, Glaser called CBS News \u201cAmericans\u2019 newest place to \u2018See BS News\u2019 \u201d and offered it a mock award for \u201cMost Editing.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Globes happened to fall directly in the eye of a major Hollywood storm that\u2019s pitting Paramount against Netflix in a fight for WBD, which put itself on the auction block several months ago. The media company led by David Zaslav agreed to sell<\/a> its film and TV studios, HBO and HBO Max to the giant streamer run by Ted Sarandos and Greg Peters, rebuffing multiple offers from Paramount. Paramount has taken its offer directly to shareholders with a hostile tender offer<\/a> that runs through January 21.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, there\u2019s a massive PR battle underway. Warners\u2019 board advised shareholders to reject the Paramount offer, which is for $30 a share in cash and backstopped by Ellison\u2019s ultra-rich father, Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison. Paramount says its deal is by far the best and surest bet.<\/p>\n

Later in the evening, as Glaser descended from the stage into the starry audience, she noted, \u201cBehind me is the HBO table \u2014 or whatever it will be called by the time the show ends.\u201d<\/p>\n

And, she said, Warner Bros\u2019 Sinners \u201csinglehandedly saved Warner Bros., for about a month \u2026 but still,\u201d after the film won the Golden Globe for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement.<\/p>\n

Warners had a great run last year and co-CEOs Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy were oft mentioned tonight. Paul Thomas Anderson was teary eyed about De Luca after wining Best Director for One Battle After Another. The Pitt also won big. And Hacks was back. Altogether, Warner Bros. Discovery touted nine\u00a0wins across\u00a0HBO Max, Warner Bros. Television Group and Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group.<\/p>\n

Sarandos received his share of kudos around Adolescence and KPop Demon Hunters.<\/p>\n

President Donald Trump has said he\u2019ll be involved in any decision. He\u2019s been on the fence. He\u2019s friendly with Larry Ellison, but has called Sarandos a great person. Today, just as the Globes were getting underway, he may have deflated the Netflix camp by reposting a commentary on Truth Social<\/a> that warns about the giant streamer\u2019s \u201ccultural hegemony.\u201d<\/p>\n

A WBD deal with either party is likely to take 12-18 months to close so things should be clearer at the 84th Golden Globes.<\/p>\n
