All rights reserved.

The Saskatchewan Roughriders have an important decision to make regarding the future of veteran kicker Brett Lauther as he’s due a $25,000 offseason roster bonus due on February 1, sources have told 3DownNation.

“Brett didn’t have the year that we had hoped and he had hoped, but what we needed to do is try to weigh in kind of the entire career of how he’s played, and then where do we think it goes from here,” said general manager Jeremy O’Day on Monday.

“Those discussions probably haven’t happened yet, but we’ll continue to look at our roster as we do all the time and try to make sure that we have the best team possible.”

Lauther connected on 39-of-54 field goal attempts in 2025 for an average of 72.2 percent, the worst mark of his eight-year tenure in Saskatchewan. His average field goal attempt came from a distance of 36.5 yards, one yard longer than the league average. The 35-year-old also made a league-worst 91.2 percent of his converts.

The native of Truro, N.S. was perfect in the West Semi-Final when he connected on all three of his field goal attempts and both of his converts. He missed a 39-yard field goal attempt in the fourth quarter of the Grey Cup, however, which would have given the Roughriders a two-score lead midway through the fourth quarter.

In the week leading up to the Grey Cup in Winnipeg, 3DownNation reported that Saskatchewan inquired about kicker Lirim Hajrullahu prior to the trade deadline, though the Toronto Argonauts weren’t interested in striking a deal at that time.

“I think it’s ongoing discussions with our whole roster of what it looks like and how everyone fits in,” said O’Day. “Brett’s our are kicker right now. We’re always trying to look at ways to improve. Whether that remains the same, we’ll have to wait and see.”

The Saskatchewan Roughriders finished first in the West Division standings in 2025 with a 12-6 record, finishing first in the West Division for the first time since 2019. The team went on to defeat the Montreal Alouettes in the 112th Grey Cup in Winnipeg, marking the team’s first championship in 12 years. Trevor Harris went 11-5 as a starter, throwing for 4,549 yards, 24 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions.

The Roughriders ranked second in net offence, second in net defence, and tied for third with a turnover differential of plus-eight. The club’s leading rusher was A.J. Ouellette with 1,222 yards, leading receiver was KeeSean Johnson with 1,159 yards, and leading tackler was A.J. Allen with 91 tackles. Saskatchewan finished second in attendance with average crowds of 28,427, which was a 2.7 percent increase from the previous year.

Photo: Reuben Polansky/3DownNation.
