\n When the world\u2019s biggest K-pop group announced their hiatus in late 2022, they were at the height of superstardom. They regularly topped music charts, won prestigious awards, and arguably transformed the genre into a global cultural phenomenon.\n <\/p>\n

\n Now, BTS is back \u2013 and coming to a city near you. As the clock struck midnight on Wednesday in Seoul, the group announced the dates and locations of a highly anticipated world tour, with their new album expected to release in March \u2013 the band\u2019s first in nearly four years.\n <\/p>\n

\n In what will be their biggest tour yet, BTS will perform across 34 regions, starting in April with multiple concerts in Goyang, South Korea and Tokyo, Japan, before traveling to other cities across Asia, North America, Europe, South America and Australia. The tour is currently scheduled to conclude in Manila, Philippines in March 2027, though a message on the band\u2019s website said more dates would be announced in Japan, the Middle East \u201cand more\u201d.\n <\/p>\n

\n BTS\u2019s fans, known as ARMY, have been fervently awaiting their idols\u2019 comeback since the last of their members completed mandatory military service last year \u2013 though the speed of the announcement came as a welcome surprise to some.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cIt\u2019s like the gods are coming down from Mount Olympus,\u201d said Carla Nicholson, a fan from San Diego who currently studies in Seoul and visited a BTS promotional installation in the South Korean capital last week. When the album releases, she plans to rent an entire cinema to watch the music videos with her friends, she said.\n <\/p>\n

\n Another fan, Jing Lee from Taiwan, said that when she heard of their impending comeback, \u201cI couldn\u2019t sleep for two nights because I\u2019m too excited, but also scared that I won\u2019t be able to get a ticket.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cI gave all my three birthday wishes to BTS, just hoping to get at least one concert ticket,\u201d she said \u2013 adding that she is ready to travel to the US if the group performs there. \u201cI\u2019m just going to follow them wherever they go.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Fans have also pored over a cryptic image teased by the band, depicting three red circles \u2013 with theories about what it means ranging from \u201chello\u201d to the symbols on the South Korean flag.\n <\/p>\n

\n But the group is returning to a very different landscape than the one they left. K-pop is no longer a novelty, with the \u201cKorean wave,\u201d also known as Hallyu, bringing the country\u2019s cultural exports to every corner of the globe. And for the past year, the industry has been rocked by a high-profile legal battle<\/a> involving BTS\u2019 parent company Hybe.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cThe challenge isn\u2019t just exposure, it\u2019s really about how to stand out, and also earn trust among global fans,\u201d said Ray Seol, an associate professor at Berklee College of Music in Boston, who researches K-pop. \u201cIt\u2019s quite a different game now.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n When BTS debuted in 2013, K-pop was already popular across Asia \u2013 but had only made limited progress breaking through Western markets.\n <\/p>\n

\n That began changing with Psy\u2019s 2012 smash hit \u201cGangnam Style,\u201d<\/a> whose viral popularity was an early precursor of what would come.\n <\/p>\n

\n In the following years, BTS skyrocketed to global recognition, with their arrival in American pop culture hailed as a major breakthrough for the genre. They were the first K-pop act to win a Billboard Music Award in 2017, to perform on \u201cSaturday Night Live\u201d in 2018, and to earn a Grammy nomination in 2020.\n <\/p>\n

\"The<\/p>\n

\n Experts say several factors contributed to their runaway success. Of course, there\u2019s the catchy music and detailed choreography \u2013 but also innovative songwriting that tackled social issues, and an active social media presence that set them apart from other K-pop groups and attracted an international fanbase.\n <\/p>\n

\n But that journey came to a pause when the members \u2013 known by their stage names V, Jin, Jimin, RM, J-Hope, Suga, and Jung Kook \u2013 began their military service.\n <\/p>\n

\n In South Korea, all able-bodied men aged 18 to 28 are required by law to perform 18-21 months of military service under a conscription system.\n <\/p>\n

\n The group had already managed to postpone their service once, thanks to South Korea\u2019s parliament passing a bill allowing top pop stars to defer their service until the age of 30. But that deadline arrived in 2022 for the oldest member, Jin<\/a> \u2013 and the others soon followed.\n <\/p>\n

\n All seven finished their service by 2025, and began making new music soon after \u2013 though each member had also released solo work during the hiatus years.\n <\/p>\n

\n However, a lot has changed from 2022 to now.\n <\/p>\n

\n For one, South Korea has cemented itself as a cultural powerhouse \u2013 the source of K-beauty, K-pop, K-dramas, and more. What was once new and foreign to Western audiences is now widely beloved \u2013 think of last year\u2019s \u201cKPop Demon Hunters,\u201d which became Netflix\u2019s most-watched film of all time.\n <\/p>\n

\n Seol, who teaches a course on K-pop at Berklee, says each semester his classrooms are \u201cfull with non-Korean students\u201d curious about the industry. When walking through his neighborhood in the Boston suburbs, he hears children belting songs from \u201cKPop Demon Hunters\u201d \u2014 the soundtrack dominated Billboard\u2019s charts for weeks, with one track winning a Critics\u2019 Choice Award and a Golden Globe for Best Original Song.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cIn 2022, when BTS paused their group activities, K-pop was still in a phase of global expansion,\u201d Seol said. \u201cNow it is a different place. Mega hits like \u2018KPop Demon Hunters\u2019 really showed how deeply K-pop culture has entered the global mainstream.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n The genre itself has gone global, too \u2013 in language, nationality and style.\n <\/p>\n

\n Take Katseye<\/a>, an LA-based group that bills itself as \u201cthe first-ever global girl group formed using K-pop artist development methodologies.\u201d Created through a reality competition series partly produced by Hybe, its members hail from four different countries and often incorporate their respective languages into their songs \u2013 a multicultural approach that could hint at the future of K-pop.\n <\/p>\n

\n It\u2019s also increasingly common for Korean stars to collaborate with artists outside of their genre. For instance, the 2024 hit song \u201cAPT\u201d was a collaboration between Bruno Mars and Ros\u00e9 of the hugely popular girl group Blackpink.\n <\/p>\n

\n At the same time, the K-pop industry has faced its own challenges \u2013 reflected in the legal battle between girl group NewJeans and their label Ador, a Hybe subsidiary, that shook up<\/a> the entertainment world last year. The controversy raised questions of artists\u2019 limited agency under major labels.\n <\/p>\n

\n Many fans, as well as spooked investors, are \u201clooking forward to seeing how BTS can actually reset the industry. It\u2019s been quite noisy, especially what Hybe has been facing,\u201d said Seol. For the sake of their financial stability, \u201cHybe has to do something, and BTS could be the answer,\u201d he added.\n <\/p>\n

\n And despite the saturated market, he said, BTS has the distinct advantage of being the first to transform the industry \u2014 an impact that has elevated them in status, longevity and influence despite their long hiatus.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cI think that they\u2019re coming back more strong and more relevant,\u201d Seol said. \u201cBTS is not just a regular K-pop group.
