As extraordinary as a criminal investigation of a sitting Fed chair is, Powell\u2019s rebuke of Trump was in some ways even more shocking.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkbnjbun0000356pz6no1sun@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For years, Powell has remained mum even as Trump called him every name and used every insult in the book, repeatedly threatening to fire him. Powell\u2019s playbook has been to remain neutral, saying his one and only focus was on the Fed\u2019s politically independent mission to maintain maximum employment and low inflation. Everything else was a distraction, Powell maintained.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkbnr3uk0007356pmq7lhc4n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Trump forced Powell\u2019s hand after the Justice Department served him with subpoenas. But in Powell\u2019s remarkable show of defiance, he didn\u2019t focus on his own actions but on defending the Fed against the Trump administration\u2019s attack on its independence \u2014 and, more broadly, the US economy.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkbgmco7000e3b6p46m0fd69@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.federalreserve.gov\/newsevents\/speech\/powell20260111a.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">stunning two-minute video<\/a> Sunday night, Powell characterized the Trump administration\u2019s potential prosecution as a threat against the livelihoods of the American public to serve Trump\u2019s whims.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkbi7ugz000u3b6pllxs86gq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \ufeff\u201cThe threat of criminal charges is a consequence of the Federal Reserve setting interest rates based on our best assessment of what will serve the public, rather than following the preferences of the president,\u201d Powell said. \u201cThis is about whether the Fed will be able to continue to set interest rates based on evidence and economic conditions \u2014 or whether instead monetary policy will be directed by political pressure or intimidation.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkbo0o6j000i356pdkz41e4r@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The fact that Powell spoke out forcefully against the Trump administration this week for the first time is all the more notable because Powell has long treasured and promoted the Fed\u2019s independence, which he sees as tantamount to its mission to help American households live better lives.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkbqlx21000l356pi86ry00e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It enables the Fed to do its core mission: making jobs plentiful and keeping prices in check, even when politically imprudent.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkbqabqg0006356pyfrfql07@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Economists, academics and former Fed officials broadly agree that safeguarding Fed independence is necessary for the soundness of the US economy. It ensures policymakers can make tough decisions on interest rates that are rooted in economic reality and not the whims of whoever controls the White House.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkbqqfid0011356p2em8hjb8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For example, a president may want lower rates to grow the economy and send stocks higher, but that policy could hurt Americans by sending prices out of control.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkbid1ok00153b6p3zcj80yu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Powell has been an ardent defender of the Fed\u2019s ability to set interest rates free of politics throughout Trump\u2019s relentless pressure campaign over the past year.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkbpgasy0000356p3oecsckh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For example, during a press conference in July, Powell was asked about Trump\u2019s recent attacks on him and the Fed. Powell didn\u2019t engage \u2013 but offered a long defense of the Fed\u2019s independence.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkbpsj980002356pidxzw3rp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI\u2019ll just say that, so I think that having an independent central bank has been an institutional arrangement that has served the public well. And as long as it serves the public well, it should continue and be respected. If it didn\u2019t serve the public well, then it wouldn\u2019t be something that we should just automatically defend,\u201d Powell said. \u201cBut what it gives us and other central banks, what it gives you is the ability to make these very challenging decisions that in ways that are focused on the data and the evolving outlook, the balance of risks and all of things we talk about, and not political factors.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkbpuz6b0008356pgpfrj1ph@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Trump noted that the Fed is hardly alone \u2013 governments of advanced economies across the world have put distance between monetary policymakers and politicians.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkbq0irg000a356pwa8eotiz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIf you were not to have that, that would be a great temptation, of course, to use interest rates to affect elections, for example,\u201d Powell added. \u201cAnd that\u2019s something that we don\u2019t want to do.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/ap25338619698065.jpg\" alt=\"An exterior view of the Marriner S. Eccles Federal Reserve building on November 29, 2025, in Washington, DC.\" class=\"image__dam-img image__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1333\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkbqk5qv000j356p0733iwxw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Previously, the closest Powell had come to criticizing Trump was in November 2024, when he was asked whether he would leave his post early if Trump demanded it.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkbqa3tk0003356pwhla6l2m@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cNo,\u201d Powell said in a press conference.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkbq85h10000356p8mf3z8i0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Asked to elaborate, Powell said, \u201cNot permitted under the law.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkbqqbzv000x356p2fma5edw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Why the about face? Because Powell viewed the potential prosecution as an existential threat that could forever politicize the Fed, undermine its credibility and upset global markets and the economy.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkci6eds0000356pqs0ta643@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That\u2019s part of the reason central bankers from around the world rallied to Powell\u2019s defense Tuesday. In the statement, the world\u2019s central bankers  stressed that the independence of central banks is a \u201ccornerstone of price, financial and economic stability\u201d and that protecting that independence with full respect for the law is critical.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkcjbxnf0006356p5c32x77a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The statement praised Powell for serving with \u201cintegrity\u201d and for his \u201cunwavering commitment to the public interest.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>        Fed remains independent, for now<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkbq8laa0001356pfb17e4s3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Among the many problems with Trump\u2019s demands for the Fed to lower rates is the perception of political interference when the Fed does take that action. The Fed in the second half of last year lowered interest rates three times in a row, though Trump has asked for more. Trump has said the United States should have rates that are among the lowest in the world and that he should have a say in rate decisions.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkbjoq1i000b3b6p5jyb1lh0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            To avoid the perception of influence, some Fed observers believe the central bank could hold off on rate cuts for longer. In other words, ridding the Fed of its independence could <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/01\/12\/business\/jerome-powell-trump-fed\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">backfire spectacularly<\/a> on Trump by making further rate cuts less likely and even emboldening Powell to remain on the Fed\u2019s board after his term as chair ends on May 15. He is serving a concurrent term on the board that runs through 2028.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkbjuanq000g3b6plxox7o1d@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cMy thought is that I really want to turn this job over to whoever replaces me in \u2014 with the economy in really good shape. That\u2019s what I want to do,\u201d Powell said in December after the Fed announced its latest rate cut, in response to a question posed by CNN\u2019s Matt Egan on what Powell hopes his legacy as chair will be.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkbjfwly00053b6p1iksgmj8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Trump administration also has a tough case to prove against Powell.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkbnvjmo000c356pmm7zdsom@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Investors and economists were puzzled by the latest salvo in the Trump-Powell fight, considering Powell\u2019s term as chair ends in just four months.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkbo0rzj000k356p21nj8pha@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The federal investigation also isn\u2019t sitting well with a growing number of Republicans in Congress, such as Sens. Thom Tillis of North Carolina and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, along with Rep. French Hill of Arkansas. \u201cPeople that respond publicly to an investigation, outwardly and firmly, like Powell, are usually in the driver\u2019s seat,\u201d Evan Gotlob, a former federal prosecutor, told CNN.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkbgkmgm000b3b6pxmro2mvk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Trump allies have accused Powell of mismanaging the central bank\u2019s renovation, which became more costly in recent years, and of lying under oath when he described some of the upgrades to senators in June 2025. Peter Navarro, a senior counselor to the president, told Fox Business on Monday: \u201cWe know he made false statements.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkbk8fph000r3b6pdh3gn3r7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe only question is whether he was aware and did it with malice,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkbk4aio000p3b6p7t5c5d8g@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Fed has been forthcoming about the renovation\u2019s cost overruns and its collaboration with other agencies, even posting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.federalreserve.gov\/faqs\/building-project-faqs.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">an FAQ on its website<\/a> with all those details.
