Skubal, the back-to-back AL Cy Young winner, is asking for $32M while the Tigers filed for $19M. Detroit sees Skubal\u2019s ask as \u201cfar beyond what the system historically has dictated,\u201d while Skubal and his agent, Scott Boras, believe the Tigers\u2019 number does not \u201caccount for two rarely cited provisions\u201d in the CBA. In meeting those provisions &#8212; the first as a player with \u201cspecial accomplishments, the second as one with five or more years of service\u201d &#8212; Skubal can \u201cargue the relevance of all players\u2019 salaries, including those who negotiated lucrative contracts in free agency.\u201d Skubal is the \u201cperfect player to test the boundaries of the system.\u201d Mets RF Juan Soto set the record for the highest salary in arbitration at $31M when he was with the Yankees.
