But perhaps the biggest debate in the coffee world is decaf coffee vs. regular coffee. Here, experts explain what you need to know.<\/p>\n<p>Decaf coffee vs. regular coffee: Which is healthier?<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"8\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Coffee beans are incredibly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prevention.com\/food-nutrition\/healthy-eating\/a69286619\/is-coffee-actually-good-for-you\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.prevention.com\/food-nutrition\/healthy-eating\/a69286619\/is-coffee-actually-good-for-you\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"rich in antioxidants\" data-node-id=\"8.1\" class=\"body-link css-inlxvj emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">rich in antioxidants<\/a>, namely polyphenols, chlorogenic acid, and ferulic acid. While caffeine does offer health benefits, most of the perks you can get from drinking coffee come from these powerful plant compounds, which are not extracted during the decaffeination process. That means that decaf coffee still delivers all the same benefits as regular, says Allidina, it just doesn\u2019t have the stimulant effect.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"9\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Koenig concurs. \u201cNumerous studies indicate that both caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee are associated with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prevention.com\/health\/a65264777\/coffee-for-longer-life-study\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.prevention.com\/health\/a65264777\/coffee-for-longer-life-study\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"lower all-cause mortality\" data-node-id=\"9.1\" class=\"body-link css-inlxvj emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">lower all-cause mortality<\/a>,\u201d she says. \u201cThis supports the belief that the non-caffeine compounds contribute to the observed health benefits. There are more than 100 different compounds in coffee besides caffeine!\u201d According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uclahealth.org\/news\/article\/health-benefits-of-coffee-remain-in-decaf-version\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.uclahealth.org\/news\/article\/health-benefits-of-coffee-remain-in-decaf-version\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"UCLA Health\" data-node-id=\"9.3\" class=\"body-link css-inlxvj emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">UCLA Health<\/a>, surveys of studies conducted on coffee have confirmed that both decaf and caffeinated coffee contain these beneficial compounds and can yield many of the same health benefits. <\/p>\n<p>Health benefits of drinking coffee<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"11\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">So, what are all those impressive benefits? Koenig notes that coffee\u2019s impact on the body is well researched. Studies show that consistent coffee consumption may:<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"13\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">While caffeine does play a role in some of these benefits, it is just one of the healthy compounds present in coffee that supports overall health. As such, you\u2019re likely to reap many of these perks whether you choose regular or decaf.<\/p>\n<p>Decaf coffee: Potential downsides<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"15\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Decaf and regular coffee likely have the same benefits, but they do have slightly different downsides to consider. Even though decaf coffee does still contain a small amount of caffeine, it\u2019s likely not enough to deliver an energy boost, if you\u2019re looking to get one from your sip. On the flip side, Koenig says that if you are particularly sensitive to caffeine, even the concentration in decaf (depending on the brew) may be enough to cause side effects like jitters. <\/p>\n<p>Regular coffee: Potential downsides<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"17\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">In terms of regular coffee, there are risks that come with caffeine consumption. \u201cAgitation, anxiety, palpitations, chest discomfort, gastrointestinal distress, insomnia, and nervousness are sometimes experienced when drinking regular coffee,\u201d says Koenig, though she adds that these are more likely to occur after excessive caffeine intake (over six cups of coffee a day) or in older adults. Caffeine is also addictive, she says, and \u201can abrupt change or decrease in caffeinated coffee can cause withdrawal symptoms.\u201d There are also a handful of people who should avoid or limit caffeine, per the <a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/caffeine.html\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/caffeine.html\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"National Library of Medicine\" data-node-id=\"17.1\" class=\"body-link css-inlxvj emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">National Library of Medicine<\/a>. These include people who are pregnant or breastfeeding, people who have sleep disorders, migraines, anxiety, arrhythmia, or high blood pressure, and people who take medications that can exacerbate the side effects of caffeine, such as stimulants.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"18\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">It\u2019s important to note that if you add lots of sugary sweeteners or creamers to your coffee, the benefits start to decrease, regardless of whether you\u2019re sipping regular or decaf. <\/p>\n<p>The bottom line<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"20\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">The vast majority of the health benefits of coffee come from the antioxidants and plant compounds present in the brew, which are found in nearly equal concentrations in both decaf and caffeinated coffee.
