<\/p>\nBollywood actor and dancer Malaika Arora has openly addressed her continued participation in item songs, saying that performing these dance numbers makes her feel empowered and that she sees no reason to apologise for it \u2014 even at the age of 52. In a recent interview, she discussed her career, the criticism she has faced, and how she views dance as an expression rather than something to be apologetic about.<\/p>\n

Malaika has been associated with some of Bollywood\u2019s most memorable song performances over the past two decades, from classics such as \u2018Chaiyya Chaiyya\u2019 and \u2018Munni Badnaam Hui\u2019 to more recent music videos like Yo Yo Honey Singh\u2019s \u2018Chillgum\u2019 and \u2018Poison Baby\u2019 from the film Thamma. While these performances have often been celebrated, they have also drawn trolling and commentary, particularly as she continues to perform them later in her career.<\/p>\n
Speaking on The Namrata Zakaria Show on YouTube, Malaika rejected the idea that she should tone down her image or apologise for choosing such roles. \u201cWhy not? Why do I need to tone it down or be apologetic about it? I mean, you get trolled for things, and many people say different things \u2014 but I don\u2019t understand what the big deal is,\u201d she said, adding that she feels \u201ctruly blessed that I am able to do all this at 52; I must be doing something right.\u201d<\/p>\n
Malaika described dance as a form of expression that she enjoys in its full form, claiming it gives her a sense of confidence and empowerment. \u201cIt is very, very empowering. It makes me feel amazing. As I have said before, I think that if women out there take it as an example or view it as something empowering or something for them that makes them feel good, then it\u2019s a job well done,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n
The actor also spoke about how the context of item songs has evolved over time. She noted that earlier in her career such numbers were often more focused on glamour and spectacle, but that contemporary filmmakers increasingly integrate them into narratives with stronger character context. This evolution, she suggested, allows performers more creative space and reflects changing sensibilities in the industry.<\/p>\n
