{"id":408659,"date":"2026-01-14T12:54:11","date_gmt":"2026-01-14T12:54:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/408659\/"},"modified":"2026-01-14T12:54:11","modified_gmt":"2026-01-14T12:54:11","slug":"economic-conflicts-are-worlds-greatest-risk-wef-survey-suggests-davos","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/408659\/","title":{"rendered":"Economic conflicts are world\u2019s greatest risk, WEF survey suggests | Davos"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Economic conflicts between major powers are the greatest risk facing the world over the next two years, according to experts polled ahead of next week\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/davos\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Davos<\/a> summit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Among 1,300 business leaders, academics and civil society figures surveyed by the World Economic Forum (WEF), \u201cgeoeconomic confrontation\u201d was identified as the most pressing threat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">These clashes were cited by 18% of respondents. With war still raging in Ukraine, \u201cstate-based armed conflict\u201d was the second most-common risk identified at 14%. Extreme weather events was third, chosen by 8% of respondents.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The warning came after a year marked by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2026\/jan\/13\/donald-trump-supreme-court-tariffs-iran-us-trade\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Donald Trump\u2019s aggressive tariff policy<\/a>, and follows US military action in Venezuela, which the president acknowledged was aimed at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2026\/jan\/09\/trump-oil-company-executives-meeting-venezuela\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">securing the country\u2019s oil resources<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Economic sanctions have become an increasingly common tool in recent years \u2013 including the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/dec\/12\/eu-to-freeze-210bn-in-russian-assets-indefinitely\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">freezing of billions of dollars of Russian assets<\/a> after the country\u2019s invasion of Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">There are also growing concerns about clashes over access to important economic resources. Finance ministers from the G7 met in Washington on Monday to discuss how to diversify the supply of the rare earth metals crucial to tech products, many of which China has control over.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">US treasury secretary Scott Bessent, who convened the meeting, warned that supply chains for these critical minerals had become <a href=\"https:\/\/home.treasury.gov\/news\/press-releases\/sb0356\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201chighly concentrated and vulnerable to disruption and manipulation\u201d<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Over a longer horizon \u2013 10 years \u2013 the most severe risks identified in the WEF survey all relate to the climate emergency. \u201cExtreme weather events\u201d topped the list, followed by \u201cbiodiversity loss and ecosystem collapse\u201d and \u201ccritical change to Earth systems\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cUnlike in the two-year outlook, where these have declined in rankings, the existential nature of environmental risks means they remain as the top priorities over the next decade,\u201d the report says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Next week\u2019s annual Davos meeting will see thousands of senior figures from politics, business and civil society, including more than 60 heads of state or government, gather to discuss the state of the global economy at the event in the Swiss Alps.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">This year\u2019s theme is \u201ca spirit of dialogue\u201d \u2013 but its star guest will be US president <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/donaldtrump\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Donald Trump<\/a>, who has spent the first year of his second term waging a trade war and ripping up the country\u2019s global obligations, including the Paris climate agreement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Other senior politicians in attendance will include German chancellor Friedrich Merz, Chinese vice-premier He Lifeng, Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and Argentine president Javier Milei.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In its annual global risks report, published on Wednesday, the WEF warned that \u201crules and institutions that have long underpinned stability are under siege in a new era in which trade, finance and technology are wielded as weapons of influence\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Most recently, the world\u2019s central bankers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/live\/2026\/jan\/13\/oil-price-trump-iran-trading-partners-tariffs-supreme-court-business-live-news-updates\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">issued a statement expressing solidarity<\/a> with Federal Reserve chair Jerome Powell, whose independence has come under attack from Trump, who has repeatedly called for faster interest rate cuts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">UK chancellor Rachel Reeves and business secretary Peter Kyle will also attend.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Economic conflicts between major powers are the greatest risk facing the world over the next two years, according&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":408660,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[11],"tags":[45,49,48,46],"class_list":{"0":"post-408659","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-economy","8":"tag-business","9":"tag-ca","10":"tag-canada","11":"tag-economy"},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/408659","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=408659"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/408659\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/408660"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=408659"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=408659"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=408659"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
