And this week, another nearly complete project off the coast of Connecticut and Rhode Island got the green light from a federal judge to continue building.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkczxvak000d3b6pli64ujvo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Monday\u2019s ruling allowing Revolution Wind to resume construction was the first in a series of court cases that businesses and states are bringing over the course of this week, challenging the administration\u2019s December suspension of all five offshore wind projects currently under construction in the Atlantic Ocean.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/02-2026-01-13t105902z-31899430-rc2sxga282y2-rtrmadp-3-usa-trump-offshorewind-orsted.jpg\" alt=\"A drone view shows rotor blades and other parts for the ongoing construction of the Revolution Wind offshore wind turbine farm, staged on the State Pier in New London, Connecticut, on September 23, 2025.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1067\" width=\"1600\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkczxvak000e3b6p9henvmws@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It\u2019s a big win for power-starved New England, whose regional grid operator says it needs the electrons generated by these wind projects to maintain electricity reliability in the region for years to come.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkczxvak000f3b6p9z6sg9ib@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            President Donald Trump, however, continues to double down on his distaste for offshore wind.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkczxvak000g3b6p0etk6o00@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cMy goal is to not let any windmill be built; they\u2019re losers,\u201d Trump said on Friday, during a meeting with oil CEOs. \u201cWe don\u2019t approve, and I told my people, we will not approve windmills.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/gettyimages-2255449578.jpg\" alt=\"President Donald Trump speaks during a meeting with oil and gas executives in the East Room of the White House on Friday, January 9, in Washington, DC.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"2000\" width=\"3000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkczxvak000h3b6pyorz2elb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Interior Department did not immediately respond to CNN\u2019s request for comment on Monday\u2019s ruling.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkczxvak000i3b6p1ska0172@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Trump\u2019s stance has resulted in the administration blocking projects that are nearly finished. In Monday\u2019s court arguments, representatives for Revolution Wind said the 704-megawatt wind farm was 87% complete. Construction had already been stopped once before by the administration, in August.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkcyy8y300003b6pz5fcmflx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Meanwhile, Massachusetts wind farm Vineyard Wind is also mostly complete and operational. That project has been allowed to send power to the grid even amid Trump\u2019s suspension, a spokesperson for regional grid operator ISO-New England told CNN in an email.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkczxvak000j3b6p0xc9rdgw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Offshore wind has long been sought by New England and mid-Atlantic states, which rely mostly on natural gas for electricity and heating \u2014 and are lacking other ready energy infrastructure. At Monday\u2019s court hearing, representatives for Revolution Wind said their wind farm was the only project of such size ready to come online and start providing power to New England\u2019s grid soon. It\u2019s ultimately expected to generate enough electricity to power upwards of 350,000 homes. When complete, the slightly smaller Vineyard Wind project is expected to power around 200,000 homes.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkczxvak000k3b6p7masubdj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The largest wind farm impacted by the December order is a sprawling Virginia project that could eventually be the largest in the nation. Set to be completed by the end of this year, it would supply electricity to the region with the world\u2019s largest cluster of power-hungry data centers.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkczxvak000l3b6ppxrs2kel@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Residential customers in the mid-Atlantic region, including Virginia, desperately need more energy to service the skyrocketing demand from data centers \u2014 and many are seeing spiking energy bills while they wait for new power to be brought online. In a notable move, that region\u2019s grid operator PJM Interconnection joined a lawsuit on behalf of the Virginia project, calling its 2.7 gigawatts an \u201cintegral component\u201d of electricity generation in the region.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/04-2025-10-20t181828z-76548831-rc2ofhahwau7-rtrmadp-3-amazon-outages-aws.jpg\" alt=\"An aerial view of an Amazon Web Services Data Center known as US East 1 in Ashburn, Virginia, on October 20, 2025.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1067\" width=\"1600\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkczxvak000m3b6pqmhriipa@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cExtended delay of construction and operation of the CVOW [Virginia] project will cause irreparable harm to the 67 million Americans served by PJM,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.documentcloud.org\/documents\/26471067-pjm-amicus-brief-supporting-virginia-offshore-wind-project-halted-by-trump-january-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">PJM wrote in a legal brief<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkczxvak000n3b6p387cqdb1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Revolution and Vineyard wind farms are \u201cparticularly important\u201d to meeting New England\u2019s winter energy needs, energy experts and the regional grid operator ISO-NE say. In <a href=\"https:\/\/isonewswire.com\/2025\/12\/22\/iso-new-england-statement-on-department-of-the-interior-offshore-wind-announcement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">a December statement<\/a>, ISO-NE said the projects were important to maintaining \u201csystem reliability in the winter when offshore wind output is highest and other forms of fuel supply are constrained.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkczxvak000o3b6p8ga9vnw3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cCanceling or delaying these projects will increase costs and risks to reliability in our region,\u201d the regional grid operator added in a statement.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkczxvak000p3b6pv6y6caak@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            New England\u2019s winter energy woes are driven both by temperature and the fact that this region is the last stop on the nation\u2019s natural gas pipeline system. Competing needs for electricity and home heating can send energy prices for consumers surging.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkczxvak000q3b6pb3imd5qi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe colder it gets on a given day, the more demands that are placed on the gas pipeline system, not just to generate electric power, but to heat people\u2019s homes,\u201d said Francis Pullaro, president of RENEW Northeast, a clean energy industry association based in New England. \u201cIf there\u2019s less demand for something, you\u2019ll lower the price.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkczxvak000r3b6pfhix4m2x@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            There\u2019s another way offshore wind will have downward pressure on prices, Pullaro said. The regional grid operator typically directs the cheapest units to run first, which means wind \u2014 which carries no cost for fuel \u2014 will be called on more, as more facilities get up and running.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/03-ap23194799135433.jpg\" alt=\"Giant wind turbine blades for the Vineyard Winds project are stacked on large racks in the harbor, on July 11, 2023, in New Bedford, Massachusetts.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"900\" width=\"1600\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkczxvak000s3b6p5nuwctow@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Wind and solar \u201chave very little marginal cost; they essentially bid zero,\u201d Pullaro said. \u201cThe more wind you have on the system, and when it\u2019s running at these peak times, it essentially means you\u2019re not having to turn on that peaker gas or oil unit, because it\u2019s just not needed.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkczxvak000t3b6prpvs5gfl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Pullaro\u2019s organization commissioned <a href=\"https:\/\/renew-ne.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/RENEW_Daymark-Value-of-Wind-in-Winter_2025-09-24-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">a recent study<\/a> that found that having 3.5 gigawatts of offshore wind on New England\u2019s grid last winter would have resulted in New England utility Eversource\u2019s residential customers saving between $15.83 &#8211; $32.13 total in electric bills over the course of a three-month winter period.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkczxvak000u3b6par6iew4c@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            However, if Revolution and Vineyard wind are both built, they will add less than half of that amount of wind energy to the grid, and there\u2019s no publicly available data yet to show how offshore wind has impacted electricity prices in the region this winter.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkczxvak000v3b6pwwjlgibg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Trump administration officials have frequently claimed that offshore wind is the most expensive form of energy. On Monday, Interior Sec. Doug Burgum repeated that, calling the form of energy \u201csome of the most expensive projects ever conceived.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkczxvak000w3b6pnk1bqfex@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Offshore wind projects do have high initial costs, in large part because the limited supply chains and high inflation rates that have dogged the US economy affect construction. But, once built, projects like Vineyard are in such demand that they will begin operation with the electricity they generate already spoken for \u2014 and paid for. The high cost of building an offshore wind farm is offset by its ability to generate inexpensive electricity.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkczxvak000x3b6pqhzq1wug@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And state officials have warned that without this wind energy on the grid, the lack of available energy will only force prices higher. Without Revolution Wind, consumers in Connecticut could pay a lot more for energy during times of high demand \u2014 as much as $200 million annually starting next year, the Connecticut Department of Energy &amp; Environmental Protection estimated in a recent report.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkczxvak000y3b6ppz56fgnn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            This week, massive wind turbine blades, towers and other components could be seen sitting at the Connecticut State Pier in New London \u2014 waiting to be taken out to sea and constructed.\n    <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"There is a glimmer of hope for the long embattled offshore wind industry.
