Price hikes picked up speed for US-based businesses toward the end of last year, a potential signal that inflation has yet to peak and prices could soon rise faster for consumers.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmke30f5u000u3j6qizbclu6r@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            US wholesale inflation picked up speed in November, pushed higher in part by fast-rising energy prices, according to shutdown-delayed data released Wednesday.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmke2a4z400083j6qe1etyd7v@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The latest Producer Price Index report showed that prices rose 0.2% in November from the month before, resulting in an annual rate of 3%, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmke3x0qv00163j6qr3pllc1l@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Wednesday\u2019s data also showed that wholesalers and retailers were likely continuing to pick up most of the hefty tab resulting from President Donald Trump\u2019s sweeping and steep tariffs on imported goods.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmke40fwn001a3j6qlei30th2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cRetailers are shielding consumers from further big increases in goods prices triggered by the tariffs,\u201d Samuel Tombs, chief US economist at Pantheon Macroeconomics, wrote in a note to investors Wednesday.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmke4er5p001y3j6q15x40r9v@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            PPI, which measures the average change in prices that producers receive for their goods and services, serves as a potential bellwether for what consumers may see in the months ahead.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmke2a4z400093j6quiui866e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            As was the case with other major economic reports that relied on data collected during the shutdown, the BLS did not release a separate PPI report for October because the 43-day federal shutdown hampered statistical agencies\u2019 operations.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmke17ct300003j6qf39jzp4g@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            However, unlike those reports, the PPI was able to include fuller data for October \u2013 only the price-update requests and submissions were delayed, BLS officials wrote in a note accompanying the report.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmke2a4z4000b3j6qampr8iwk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In October, falling energy prices resulted in a softer overall reading: Producer prices rose 0.1% from September and were up 2.8% annually.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmke2j7cv000i3j6qa0q0w8zg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Wednesday\u2019s report also showed that wholesale <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/business\/live-news\/us-inflation-retail-sales-economy\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">inflation was hotter than previously thought in September.<\/a> The annual rate was revised higher to 3% from 2.7%.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmke44s85001g3j6qp9ziknqw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            When excluding food and energy, categories that can have abnormal price shifts, core PPI rose 0.3% in October and prices were flat in November; however, the annual rates firmed to 2.9% in October and 3% in November.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmke2q00i000s3j6q0rn200xa@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The latest PPI also provided a potential glimpse at how businesses are navigating higher costs that they\u2019re paying because of President Donald Trump\u2019s sweeping tariffs on imported goods.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmke3h74f000x3j6q23wd4i3y@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Trade services, which measures profit margins for wholesalers and retailers, were down by 0.8% in both October and November, a possible indication that businesses were absorbing higher costs versus fully passing them along to customers.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmke3rg5f00103j6qi6dbtub1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            As the labor market has weakened, wage growth has slowed, and economic disparities have grown wider, some businesses have sought to cut prices \u2013 versus raising them further \u2013 because a wider swath of Americans is struggling with affordability.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmke43ffh001d3j6qs99up6o1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            When excluding food, energy as well as trade services \u2013 which also can be volatile \u2013 the underlying trajectory of wholesale inflation was even more concerning: Prices shot 0.7% higher in October and rose 0.2% in November, lifting the annual rate to 3.4% in October and then 3.5% in November.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmke4b16g001p3j6qeslnoozz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That\u2019s the highest annual rate for PPI excluding energy, food and trade services in eight months.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmke4dmwd001u3j6qbr5882cc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cPremature declarations of a peak in tariff-related inflation look rather unconvincing after parsing the data,\u201d Joe Brusuelas, RSM US chief economist, wrote in an email to CNN.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmke4ciiq001s3j6qravv7un3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The latest PPI report offers some signals for the Federal Reserve\u2019s preferred inflation gauge, as several PPI data points feed in to the Personal Consumption Expenditures price index.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmke5o1b900213j6qp22faybf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The CPI data during the fourth quarter and the latest PPI data point to the PCE price index edging further from the Fed\u2019s 2% target rate, Pantheon\u2019s Tombs wrote.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmke5rrrr00243j6q658y4qb9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The October and November PCE report, which also will include the latest data on spending, is scheduled to be released
