In addition to effectively shadowing receivers, Tevaughn Campbell provided ample foreshadowing during the 2025 CFL season.<\/p>\n
The 32-year-old Saskatchewan Roughriders cornerback took off on a 112-yard interception return during the Labour Day Classic.<\/p>\n
He punctuated the season by helping Saskatchewan win the 112th Grey Cup Game.<\/p>\n
Campbell forced two turnovers during the championship contest, registering an interception and forcing a late-fourth-quarter fumble as Saskatchewan defeated the Montreal Alouettes 25-17 on Nov. 16 at Princess Auto Stadium in Winnipeg.<\/p>\n
At that very same venue, he had been responsible for two turnovers \u2014\u00a0a pair of fourth-quarter interceptions \u2014 as the Roughriders defeated the Blue Bombers 21-13 on Sept. 6.<\/p>\n
So, yes, he provided several hints about what was to come in November.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think the stars were just aligned,\u201d Campbell reflected on Tuesday \u2014\u00a0one day after it was announced that he had signed a one-year contract extension with the Green and White.<\/p>\n
Campbell was one of the stars of the 2025 season, returning six interceptions for 205 yards in 13 games.<\/p>\n
The six picks included a pick-six \u2014\u00a0an 89-yarder against the visiting B.C. Lions on June 28 \u2014\u00a0and a novel pick-two.<\/p>\n
On Aug. 31, Campbell thwarted the Blue Bombers\u2019 bid for a game-tying two-point conversion by intercepting Zach Collaros late in the fourth quarter and sprinting 112 yards to produce two points for the Roughriders. He concluded the scoring as Saskatchewan won 34-30.<\/p>\n
The 112-yarder tied a team record that had been set on Aug. 27, 1972, when Bruce Bennett scored a lengthy interception-return touchdown against the visiting Calgary Stampeders.<\/p>\n
Campbell\u2019s dash for the decisive deuce helped him lead the CFL in interception return yards (205). That is the second-highest total in franchise history, behind Dale West (226, 1963).<\/p>\n
Individual achievements are nice, but the team\u2019s accomplishments were foremost in mind as Campbell determined his plans for 2026.<\/p>\n
\u201cAfter the season was over, I told pretty much all my coaches that I was contemplating retirement,\u201d said Campbell, a father of three who was eligible to test free agency in February.<\/p>\n
\u201cI didn\u2019t know what my decision would be. They were all super supportive and told me that whatever I decided, they were happy with. If I was coming back to Sask, they were happy with it. If I decided to hang it up, they were happy with it.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey wanted what was best to me. They gave me time to think about it, so I can\u2019t complain.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ultimately, recollections of Nov. 16 and aspirations for 2026 won out.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think it was a lot of things combined \u2014\u00a0from the teammates to the organization,\u201d Campbell said. \u201cHolding that trophy up, I thought, \u2018Man \u2026 we did it this time. Why not again? Why not next year?\u2019<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was definitely the success we had as a team. Just being in the locker room and seeing the excitement and the joy and the relief of, \u2018Finally, we\u2019ve got this.\u2019<\/p>\n
\u201cThere were the looks on guys\u2019 faces who had never won it before, like myself, it was just like, \u2018What a high. Let\u2019s keep riding the high and try to get it again next year.\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n
That message was routinely reinforced by quarterback Trevor Harris.<\/p>\n
\u201cTrevor would be in the back of my ear every day, saying, \u2018T.C., you\u2019ve got to come back next year. We\u2019ve got to do it next year,\u2019 \u201d Campbell said with a chuckle.<\/p>\n
On the surface, it may seem surprising to discover that he gave any consideration to retirement, given the frequency with which his stellar play influenced games.<\/p>\n
He may be 32 but, judging from his play, it looks like the digits are reversed.<\/p>\n
\u201cI do feel like a lot of people have thought that as well, especially when I was talking to guys on the team,\u201d he said. \u201cI told them I was thinking of hanging it up and they said, \u2018After this year? How are you going to do that?\u2019<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m turning 33 next season. I\u2019m getting there. It\u2019s not so much the physical part, but the mental part and the family aspect, spending time with my kids.\u201d<\/p>\n
Time has flown by for Campbell, who was a two-sport star (football\/track) at the University of Regina before being selected by the Calgary Stampeders in the third round (22nd overall) of the 2015 CFL Draft.<\/p>\n
The Toronto-born Campbell played for Calgary (2015), Saskatchewan (2016) and Montreal (2017 and 2018) before heading to the NFL. He returned to the Canadian game last year, signing with Saskatchewan on Feb. 3.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen he came back from the NFL, he just fit right in with all the guys,\u201d Vice-President of Football Operations and General Manager Jeremy O\u2019Day said. \u201cHe became a big part of the locker room.<\/p>\n
\u201cI was super excited for him to have the opportunity to win the Grey Cup and we\u2019re just excited to have T.C. back.\u201d<\/p>\n
