Joey Swoll says he\u2019s done with social media after his positive message about Hulk Hogan snowballed into something bigger.<\/p>\n
Joey Swoll is a popular fitness influencer who calls out poor gym etiquette and promotes a gym-positive lifestyle. Recently, Joey drew criticism after he acknowledged Hulk Hogan<\/a>\u2018s death with a post that showed himself wearing Hulk Hogan\u2019s attire in the gym. Joey said that Hogan had sent him the ring gear as a gift. However, most of the people replying criticized him for supporting Hogan after the controversy surrounding his past racist comments.<\/p>\n However, Swoll was once again called out after he mistakenly referred to \u201ccolored\u201d athletes instead of saying \u201cpeople of color.\u201d During a livestream<\/a>, Swoll addressed criticism about his post about Hogan and said, \u201cIf you\u2019re going to attack me, you\u2019d better go after the colored athletes and the people that are Black and minority that posted [about Hogan] as well.\u201d<\/p>\n Swoll ultimately issued a video apology and said he would aim to do better, just like he teaches others to do. Joey said he only hoped to honor the same Hogan that inspired him as a child. Joey said he now knows what a horrible person Hogan was after learning he used racist slurs in the past, so he deleted the photo. He also apologized for using the term \u2018colored\u2019, calling it a very outdated and very offensive term. He still drew the ire of fans who attacked him on social media, despite making an apology.<\/p>\n Joey Swoll says he\u2019s quitting social media<\/p>\n Now, Joey Swoll said<\/a> he\u2019s quitting social media over all of the hate he\u2019s been met with. He wrote the following statement on his Instagram Story<\/a>:<\/p>\n \u201cAll the good I\u2019ve done, all the people I\u2019ve helped, all for nothing. When I need help, when I need kindness and compassion, NOTHING. I truly hope all the people I\u2019ve inspired do great things in their life and pay it forward to help others and carry on my message. But no matter how much good you do, people just wait for a reason to hate you and tear you down. It\u2019s true, you either die a hero, or live long enough to be the villain. Thank you all for your support. I love you all. I am done with social media.\u201d<\/p>\n Update: Swoll later said<\/a> that people have sent him messages where they threatened to kill him and bring harm to his girlfriend, business partner and sister. He said he still might quit social media, or just need a break from it.
