From tiny sample tubes to a nanopore sequencing device to the micro units of measurements used in analysis, such as microns and microliters.<\/p>\n<p>The current research team is also small, with just two members, but the potential impact of their work is pretty big.<\/p>\n<p>Colin Pattison, PhD, researcher and instructor, and Olivia Zamrykut, research assistant, are experimenting with collecting and analyzing environmental DNA, or eDNA \u2014 from animal fur, skin cells and waste found in water, the air and even spider webs \u2014 to identify what kinds of organisms are present in a natural area and understand how they interact.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re looking at using an eDNA approach as a more efficient, safer and cost-effective way to do environmental monitoring and assessment work,\u201d says Pattison.<\/p>\n<p>These methods of sampling are more passive, allowing the team to explore biodiversity without actively disturbing wildlife or having to wait for an animal to make an appearance.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While an eDNA approach may not replace traditional monitoring and assessment methods entirely, Pattison and Zamrykut say it could help support conservation and environmental management while expediting impact assessments for infrastructure and development projects.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Olivia Zamrykut (left) and Colin Pattison (right) wearing navy blue lab coats in SAIT's eDNA lab. Those cells contain DNA that identifies us as human.<\/p>\n<p>In nature, thousands of different organisms leave behind their DNA every day.<\/p>\n<p>\ud83d\udca7Water sampling is one method for collecting eDNA Pattison and Zamrykut are testing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe water could come from a river, a pond or a lake,\u201d says Pattison. \u201cThere are lots of different ways we can collect water samples and source DNA.\u201d \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Once gathered, the water samples are pumped through membrane filters with a very small pore size of 0.45 microns to capture the DNA.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Colin Pattison by water with trees and blue sky in the background.\" class=\"\" height=\"487\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/nw-edna-colin-pattison-water.jpg\" width=\"730\"\/>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u2708\ufe0f If you see what looks like a foam airplane with no wings hanging from a tree in the woods, it might be there to collect eDNA.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen the wind blows, it hits the side of the plane and turns the filter into the wind to capture material in the air.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the fall, Pattison and Zamrykut worked with students from SAIT\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sait.ca\/programs-and-courses\/diplomas\/environmental-technology\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Environmental Technology<\/a> program to set up these special airplanes at two locations about 100 hectares each in Kananaskis.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Olivia Zamrykut setting up a foam airplane in the trees\" class=\"\" height=\"487\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/nw-edna-olivia-zamrykut-airplane.jpg\" width=\"730\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\ud83d\udd78\ufe0fA third collection method they\u2019re testing uses spider webs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInstead of setting up equipment and waiting a few weeks, we wanted to test if we can go into the environment and collect eDNA from spider webs that are already there,\u201d says Pattison.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA group of Environmental Technology students are very interested in exploring this question for a capstone project.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sait.ca\/news\/2025\/12\/sait-students-save-the-environment-and-reduce-industry-costs-with-ispf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The capstone received funding from the Innovative Student Project Fund (ISPF)<\/a> through SAIT\u2019s Applied Research and Innovation Services hub.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So far, experiments with webs, water and air have all revealed detectable DNA consistent with wildlife the researchers know to be present in the area.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Two people crouching on snow-covered ground in an outdoor setting with dry grass and trees in the background.\" class=\"\" height=\"487\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/nw-edna-snow-tracks2.jpg\" width=\"730\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Starting from snow tracks<\/p>\n<p>A recent graduate of SAIT\u2019s Environmental Technology program, Zamrykut\u2019s own capstone project was part of the eDNA lab\u2019s origin story.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe wanted to see if we could detect DNA in animal snow tracks,\u201d she says. \u201cWe went out to Kananaskis, and Colin helped identify wolf, cougar and deer tracks,\u201d she says. \u201cMy partner and I scooped as much snow as we could from each set of tracks and took our samples back to the lab.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There, they extracted and sequenced the DNA and were able to confirm those animals made the tracks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a really exciting project.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition to working at the lab, Zamrykut is currently completing a degree at the University of Manitoba.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Learning with nano tech<\/p>\n<p>Although SAIT\u2019s eDNA lab is relatively new, eDNA has been around for a few decades, explains Pattison. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#8217;ve known about eDNA for about 10 years. I knew people were experimenting with it, and I wanted to bring it into the Environmental Technology program.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the big things that\u2019s changed over the last five to seven years is the ability to sequence DNA in a small lab like this one thanks to technology,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>Before Zamrykut\u2019s snow tracks project, Pattison would collect eDNA samples from the field and send everything to a lab for results.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn outside lab would do the DNA extraction and sequencing, and they would tell us what we did or didn\u2019t have in a report. When a DNA molecule travels through a nanopore, it creates an electrical charge, which allows the device to determine the sequence of nucleotide bases and identify the species present in the sample.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything we\u2019re doing here now, started with the nanosequencer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Interdisciplinary learning and support<\/p>\n<p>All research work conducted at the eDNA lab matches up with program coursework to encourage as much student involvement as possible.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the Environmental Technology ISPF capstone projects, two student groups from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sait.ca\/programs-and-courses\/certificates\/integrated-artificial-intelligence\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Integrated Artificial Intelligence<\/a> program are also working with the lab.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have a ton of data collected from remotely triggered cameras, as well as acoustic monitors,\u201d says Pattison. \u201cThis data can tell us if what we&#8217;re collecting from eDNA matches what we\u2019re getting from the other instruments.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The students are using AI to classify images and acoustic recordings by species, which will help save time and aid in animal identification.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe acoustic monitoring data has all these layered sounds, for example, from a wetland,\u201d says Zamrykut. \u201cDozens of different types of birds are singing and frogs are croaking all at the same time.
