{"id":413068,"date":"2026-01-16T12:03:08","date_gmt":"2026-01-16T12:03:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/413068\/"},"modified":"2026-01-16T12:03:08","modified_gmt":"2026-01-16T12:03:08","slug":"venezuelan-opposition-leader-machado-meets-trump-at-white-house-gifts-him-her-nobel-peace-prize-medal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/413068\/","title":{"rendered":"Venezuelan opposition leader Machado meets Trump at White House, gifts him her Nobel Peace Prize medal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Venezuelan opposition leader and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Maria Corina Machado presented U.S. President Donald Trump with her Nobel Peace Prize medal during a White House meeting on Jan. 16. <\/p>\n<p>According to a U.S. official, Trump will be keeping the medal, though the gesture is largely symbolic as the Nobel committee does not allow the prize to be officially transferred or shared.<\/p>\n<p>The meeting came less than two weeks after U.S. forces <a href=\"https:\/\/kyivindependent.com\/us-carries-out-large-scale-strike-on-venezuela-maduro-captured-and-flown-out-the-country-trumps-says\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">captured<\/a> then-President Nicolas Maduro and his wife in Caracas and brought them to New York to stand trial on drug trafficking charges. <\/p>\n<p>Ahead of his capture, Maduro maintained close ties with Russian President Vladimir Putin, with Russia serving as one of Venezuela&#8217;s largest arms suppliers and providing significant financial loans.<\/p>\n<p>Machado was given the prize for her &#8220;tireless work promoting democratic rights for the people of <a href=\"https:\/\/kyivindependent.com\/tag\/venezuela\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Venezuela<\/a> and for her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The award is one of the five original prizes established by Alfred Nobel&#8217;s 1895 will. It is awarded each year to individuals or organizations that have made significant contributions to peace efforts.<\/p>\n<p>Despite hosting Machado, <a href=\"https:\/\/kyivindependent.com\/tag\/donald-trump\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Trump<\/a> has previously cast doubt on her credibility as a potential leader for Venezuela after Maduro\u2019s removal. <\/p>\n<p>Machado told reporters she made the presentation \u201cas a recognition for his unique commitment with (Venezuela\u2019s) freedom.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The move follows months of Trump publicly arguing he deserved the prize, pointing to what he describes as his role in ending or advancing peace efforts in multiple global conflicts. <\/p>\n<p>Trump later thanked Machado on Truth Social and noted that it was a \u201cgreat honor\u201d to meet her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaria presented me with her Nobel Peace Prize for the work I have done,\u201d Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/115902023696178994\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">wrote<\/a>. \u201cSuch a wonderful gesture of mutual respect.
