Now, there are none.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk79cnl20000356pp1aez48k@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Data on car-buying costs released Monday show how much the loss of cheaper models can hurt customers: New car buyers paid $50,326 on average in December, a record high, according to estimates from Kelley Blue Book, a Cox Automotive brand. Car buying site Edmunds also reported a record (though slightly lower) average price of $49,466.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkblp4en0001356pwhwvx47q@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Both estimates mean many buyers are paying far more than $50,000 and will continue to do so moving forward.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkbkikwc00013b6pg4e2h878@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The high average price isn\u2019t just due to automakers\u2019 high sticker prices or buyers\u2019 demands for larger, more expensive models. It\u2019s partly driven up by fewer and fewer cheap options for new car buyers.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk1pw6yw00003b6pykx4vfmh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The most recent casualty was the Nissan Versa, which first went on sale nearly 20 years ago with a starting price of about $12,550. Nissan ended production of the Versa in December.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk1talct0000356p18nmtk0v@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The lack of low-priced options could put owning a car out of reach for many people, another example of an affordability crisis that\u2019s squeezed Americans. And the contrast with booming luxury auto sales underscores the K-shaped economy that\u2019s left the wealthy spending freely while lower-income people struggle.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk1trnx90009356pzby1d7iy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cAs we hack away at these entry-level vehicles not being available, you can say that virtually every car on the road that is brand new with those dealer plates is a \u2018luxury purchase,\u2019\u201d said Ivan Drury, the director of insights at Edmunds.com.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjx59d2i00003b6p0s3hoaai@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Concerns about car affordability have pervaded the market since the pandemic, when prices rose due to supply chain constraints.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjx5kjof00023b6pq24i6fig@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201c(The pandemic) fundamentally restructured pricing dynamics,\u201d Erin Keating, executive analyst at Cox Automotive, said during an end-of-year webinar about the car market on December 17. The higher numbers are \u201cnow the new baseline,\u201d she added.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjujzqcv00053b6pi3upq2iu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The 2025 Nissan Versa, which was priced at about $18,000 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edmunds.com\/vehicles\/cheapest-new-cars\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">in October<\/a>, was the last car model to fall under $20,000, according to Ivan Drury, the director of insights at Edmunds.com.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk1umfuh000b356pus1y2euf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Mitsubishi Mirage, which was discontinued in August 2024, was priced at about $18,000; the Kia Forte, which Kia essentially replaced with the more expensive K4, was discontinued after the K4\u2019s announcement in March 2024.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/gettyimages-2210053860.jpg\" alt=\"New Hyundai and Kia vehicles at the Port of Seattle in Seattle, Washington, on Wednesday, April 16, 2025.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1334\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk75ry6u00003b6pw1mbdel6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Those cars were largely produced abroad, where wages for autoworkers are cheaper. President Donald Trump\u2019s 25% tariffs on imported cars and auto parts have raised costs for automakers, although many companies have eaten most of the billions in additional costs because of concerns that consumers would reject price increases and delay purchases, Drury said. The tariff costs likely doomed the least expensive models, which had thin margins to begin with.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk1umhaz000d356pt8wtr33s@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The least expensive new car today is the 2026 Hyundai Venue, which has a manufacturer\u2019s suggested retail price of $20,550, according to Edmunds.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjx65vka000r3b6pcvwf7lfn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Affordable cars like the Versa, which may not sell in profitable volumes, are more likely to be cut from automakers\u2019 lineups while leaving other affordable models on the market, said Drury. Competing automakers, like Toyota, stand to gain customers who will prioritize a less expensive, entry-level vehicle over brand loyalty, he added.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk6zl2lk00003b6pgv3smgms@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Car dealers are increasingly worried that lower-income consumers are being excluded from the market, as a wealthier group of buyers sustain car sales, warned Keating.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjx5lrnd00053b6pltnmgi37@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Buyers who can\u2019t afford new cars are opting to buy used vehicles or holding onto their current cars for longer, Keating said. But Americans who can\u2019t afford a car at all will face more hurdles when returning to work, running errands and chauffeuring children \u2014 especially in cities or towns lacking reliable public transportation.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjx656ik000l3b6p0xzree0y@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Households making less than $75,000 annually made up 26% of sales last year, compared to 37% in 2019, according to a Cox Automotive analysis of S&amp;P Global Mobility data.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/gettyimages-2209112143.jpg\" alt=\"A person walks past BMW cars displayed for sale at a dealership on April 7, 2025 in Glendale, California.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1305\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjx65rfp000o3b6pc056df6v@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Meanwhile, wealthier buyers who can afford new vehicles are opting for premium, larger SUVs, Keating said. People making more than $150,000 now make up more than 40% of new car sales, compared to about 29% in 2019, according to Cox. Those 2019 income levels are not adjusted for inflation or changes in average income.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjx5rnmb000a3b6p4zx6gkfl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It\u2019s another example of America\u2019s increasingly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/12\/31\/economy\/k-shaped-consumers-left-behind-2026\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">K-shaped economy,<\/a> where wealthy Americans continue to spend while a larger share of middle- and lower-income households pull back due to economic strain.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmk772afb0000356pqhztkeh1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Wealthier Americans have seen their net worths boosted by the strong <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/10\/27\/investing\/us-stock-market-rally\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">stock market<\/a>, wage gains and higher home values. But lower-earning Americans have seen a slowing job market, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/10\/22\/business\/car-payments-late-default-subprime\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">high debt burdens<\/a> and years of accumulated inflation take a bite out of their spending power.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjxc7gu000213b6pq1s7g1fw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Buyers care most about their monthly payments, said Tyson Jominy, senior vice president of data and analytics at J.D. Power. A $500 monthly payment pre-pandemic may have been enough to afford a Toyota Highlander but now gets a compact car like a Toyota Corolla, he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjxeop7a002c3b6pc4yhzlal@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Overall car prices are expected to drop by about $500 on average in 2026, he said, signaling a better-priced environment for consumers.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjxesbal002f3b6p03gd3ra9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And as automakers fight for a smaller share of consumers, they\u2019ll offer more incentives on new cars to compete with one- or two-year-old vehicles, noted Drury.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjxevarm002i3b6prcm2c80u@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cOnce we see incentives pile on for those new cars, it trickles on down.
