(Supplied: Brendan Tiernan)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In late October, about 100 million crabs departed the dense jungle for the ocean, where they laid their eggs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The mass exodus is a well-documented and <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2024-12-15\/christmas-island-red-crab-migration-holiday-and-matching-tattoos\/104701524\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/104701524\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">much-celebrated<\/a> phenomenon, attracting spectators from all over the world.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Lesser known is the emergence of tiny megalopae months later: the hatchlings that make their way back to shore before digging fresh forest burrows inland.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Most years see few survive the perilous return journey.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Last year, we didn&#8217;t see very many babies at all,&#8221; Ms Jankowski said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;If the swell or the currents don&#8217;t align &#8230; they might all just get washed out to sea.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Baby red crabs standing on top of each other\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/bf1be17bd3b13beda426184270542978.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Millions of baby crabs make the return journey.
