After a few seasons of lackluster baseball, the St. Louis Cardinals<\/a> are in a full-scale rebuild. They have finally traded Nolan Arenado, opening up more opportunities for the younger players.<\/p>\n

While this upcoming season could prove to be difficult, it will be a waiting game. The club is laying its foundation and building its farm system under the new president of baseball operations, Chaim Bloom.<\/p>\n

He has the experience and the ability to bring this organization back to glory. But the fanbase may have to wait a few seasons.<\/p>\n

It could benefit the Cardinals to free up their catching logjam<\/p>\n

One decision that Bloom could make is regarding the club’s backstop. They are loaded with talent at the catching position, and moving on from one of them could benefit them.<\/p>\n

Bleacher Report’s Kerry Miller<\/a> also voices that opinion, and tags the Cardinals’ catchers as the best trade candidates at the position across MLB.<\/p>\n

“Three of St. Louis’ top six prospects are catchers, two of whom are now on the 40-man roster, along with Pedro Pages. Ivan Herrera and Yohel Pozo. Depth is great, but even rebuilding teams don’t need five catchers. They’ve been mostly dumping salary in their trades this winter, but they could get a nice package in return for four years of team control on either Pages or Herrera.”<\/p>\n

There is no point in having all these catchers, and for a team that has already made a ton of trades so far, why not one more? This trade could bring back quite a package, instead of just dumping salary as they have been.<\/p>\n

If the Cardinals want to improve for the future, then the option is quite clear. Multiple teams are actively looking for catching depth, and could jump the gun on a deal like this late into the offseason.<\/p>\n
