This is evident in both computer hardware, with the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tomshardware.com\/tech-industry\/idc-expects-average-pc-prices-to-jump-by-up-to-8-percent-in-2026-due-to-crushing-memory-shortages-some-vendors-already-selling-pre-builts-without-ram\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.tomshardware.com\/tech-industry\/idc-expects-average-pc-prices-to-jump-by-up-to-8-percent-in-2026-due-to-crushing-memory-shortages-some-vendors-already-selling-pre-builts-without-ram\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">memory shortage causing PC prices and other components to dramatically increase in such a short period<\/a>, and the wider industry, with <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tomshardware.com\/tech-industry\/data-center-boom-sends-some-wholesale-electricity-prices-soaring-up-to-267-percent-in-five-years-says-report-as-global-rollout-of-ai-factories-continues-apace\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.tomshardware.com\/tech-industry\/data-center-boom-sends-some-wholesale-electricity-prices-soaring-up-to-267-percent-in-five-years-says-report-as-global-rollout-of-ai-factories-continues-apace\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">electricity prices surging by 267% in five years,<\/a> and water-distressed communities wondering how the large amount of water that some data centers use will affect local supply.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">Despite these issues, AI data centers are a crucial infrastructure that the country needs to stay ahead in the ongoing global race to Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tomshardware.com\/tag\/microsoft\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.tomshardware.com\/tag\/microsoft\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Microsoft<\/a> likened the current boom in AI infrastructure construction in its <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.microsoft.com\/on-the-issues\/2026\/01\/13\/community-first-ai-infrastructure\/\" data-url=\"https:\/\/blogs.microsoft.com\/on-the-issues\/2026\/01\/13\/community-first-ai-infrastructure\/\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">\u201cCommunity-First AI Infrastructure\u201d framework<\/a> to other large infrastructure projects completed in the United States in the past 250 years \u2014 from canals, railroads, and the electrical grid to highways, airports, and the telephone system. Even Nvidia&#8217;s Jensen Huang has alluded to a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tomshardware.com\/pc-components\/gpus\/nvidia-is-building-100-ai-factories-jensens-50-year-gambit-begins\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.tomshardware.com\/pc-components\/gpus\/nvidia-is-building-100-ai-factories-jensens-50-year-gambit-begins\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">50-year infrastructure buildout<\/a> for AI data centers. However, Microsoft argues that the extraordinary pace of building said infrastructure shouldn&#8217;t come at the cost of the communities around it.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-46af335d-0e2b-453a-9447-7b7232a24f5f\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"8595728a-8996-4bf9-886f-9a5675bd0002-0\">Microsoft asked, \u201cHow can our nation build transformative infrastructure in a way that strengthens, rather than strains, the local communities where it takes root?\u201d It answered this with several points \u2014 first, the company claims that it will not drive electricity prices wherever its data centers are placed, ensuring that its rates cover its usage and the infrastructure investments needed to deliver that.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p>Secondly, Microsoft committed to reducing the amount of water that its data centers use, and will ensure that it replenishes any supply used through various short-term and long-term projects.<\/p>\n<p>Aside from electricity and water supply concerns, the tech giant also gave assurances that it will invest in the local population. The company is laying out a longer-term vision for how it might support the communities it is building around. The company has also commented that it&#8217;s already seen results in various municipalities: namely, Quincy, Washington, Boydton, Virginia, and Mt. Pleasant, Wisconsin. Additionally, the company also <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tomshardware.com\/desktops\/servers\/microsoft-cancels-wisconsin-data-center-after-community-pushback-244-acre-caledonia-site-on-hold-but-redmond-says-it-remains-committed-to-the-region\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.tomshardware.com\/desktops\/servers\/microsoft-cancels-wisconsin-data-center-after-community-pushback-244-acre-caledonia-site-on-hold-but-redmond-says-it-remains-committed-to-the-region\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">canceled its plan to build a data center in Caledonia, Wisconsin<\/a>, after backlash from the local populace.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-6b8686e0-8973-41ca-83d6-57097d46849f\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>A lead for other hyperscalers to follow<\/p>\n<p id=\"874b1f2e-d6ea-4240-81ea-3791d3243515\">Even though Microsoft is taking the lead, it\u2019s not a guarantee that other companies will follow suit. xAI has already ruffled feathers with the surrounding community of its Colossus site, as allegations surfaced that it was <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tomshardware.com\/tech-industry\/artificial-intelligence\/elon-musks-xai-allegedly-powers-colossus-supercomputer-facility-using-illegal-generators\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.tomshardware.com\/tech-industry\/artificial-intelligence\/elon-musks-xai-allegedly-powers-colossus-supercomputer-facility-using-illegal-generators\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">using illegal generators to power the site<\/a>. OpenAI was also under scrutiny when the regulatory body in Detroit, Michigan, gave the local power company the green light to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tomshardware.com\/tech-industry\/artificial-intelligence\/openais-stargate-data-center-gets-approval-to-receive-1-4-gigawatts-of-power-in-michigan-some-residents-furious-as-energy-company-is-given-go-ahead-by-regulatory-body-without-hearing-opposition\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.tomshardware.com\/tech-industry\/artificial-intelligence\/openais-stargate-data-center-gets-approval-to-receive-1-4-gigawatts-of-power-in-michigan-some-residents-furious-as-energy-company-is-given-go-ahead-by-regulatory-body-without-hearing-opposition\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">deliver 1.4 gigawatts to the Stargate data center without a hearing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>If Microsoft&#8217;s promises hold, investing in the local populace will likely result in increased costs, and even though many AI hyperscalers are cash-rich at the moment, some experts are already <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tomshardware.com\/tech-industry\/artificial-intelligence\/usd650-billion-in-annual-revenue-required-to-deliver-10-percent-return-on-ai-buildout-investment-j-p-morgan-claims-equivalent-to-usd35-payment-from-every-iphone-user-or-usd180-from-every-netflix-subscriber-in-perpetuity\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.tomshardware.com\/tech-industry\/artificial-intelligence\/usd650-billion-in-annual-revenue-required-to-deliver-10-percent-return-on-ai-buildout-investment-j-p-morgan-claims-equivalent-to-usd35-payment-from-every-iphone-user-or-usd180-from-every-netflix-subscriber-in-perpetuity\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">calling out the amount of money poured into AI spending<\/a>. Three Democratic U.S. Senators have <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tomshardware.com\/tech-industry\/artificial-intelligence\/elizabeth-warren-other-u-s-senators-concerned-about-big-tech-pushing-up-electricity-costs-demands-explanation-from-amazon-google-meta-as-ai-data-centers-drive-up-residential-energy-bills\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.tomshardware.com\/tech-industry\/artificial-intelligence\/elizabeth-warren-other-u-s-senators-concerned-about-big-tech-pushing-up-electricity-costs-demands-explanation-from-amazon-google-meta-as-ai-data-centers-drive-up-residential-energy-bills\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">called out Amazon, Google, Meta, Microsoft, and others<\/a> about their outsize impact on electricity costs, while Senator Bernie Sanders wanted to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tomshardware.com\/tech-industry\/artificial-intelligence\/bernie-sanders-calls-for-halt-on-ai-data-center-construction-wants-to-ensure-that-the-technology-benefits-all-of-us-not-just-the-1-percent\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.tomshardware.com\/tech-industry\/artificial-intelligence\/bernie-sanders-calls-for-halt-on-ai-data-center-construction-wants-to-ensure-that-the-technology-benefits-all-of-us-not-just-the-1-percent\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">halt all AI data center construction<\/a> to ensure that they benefit \u201call of us, not just the 1%.\u201d More recently, President Donald Trump said that <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tomshardware.com\/tech-industry\/artificial-intelligence\/trump-says-that-ai-tech-companies-need-to-pay-their-own-way-when-it-comes-to-their-electricity-consumption-says-major-changes-are-coming-to-ensure-americans-dont-pick-up-the-tab-for-data-centers\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.tomshardware.com\/tech-industry\/artificial-intelligence\/trump-says-that-ai-tech-companies-need-to-pay-their-own-way-when-it-comes-to-their-electricity-consumption-says-major-changes-are-coming-to-ensure-americans-dont-pick-up-the-tab-for-data-centers\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AI tech companies need to \u201cpay their own way\u201d and not let Americans \u201cpick up the tab\u201d<\/a> for their electricity consumption.<\/p>\n<p>Although we\u2019re still waiting for concrete actions from the federal government on how it will address the electricity issue, this is one of the few times in recent memory that both sides of the political spectrum are raising similar concerns.
