{"id":414387,"date":"2026-01-17T02:21:10","date_gmt":"2026-01-17T02:21:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/414387\/"},"modified":"2026-01-17T02:21:10","modified_gmt":"2026-01-17T02:21:10","slug":"after-breaking-several-cycling-world-records-in-2025-marriott-slaterville-man-aims-for-more-news-sports-jobs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/414387\/","title":{"rendered":"After breaking several cycling world records in 2025, Marriott-Slaterville man aims for more | News, Sports, Jobs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>OGDEN \u2014 At the beginning of 2025, Matthew Lefthand of Marriott-Slaterville was an avid cyclist looking at possibly breaking a virtual cycling world record.<\/p>\n<p>Entering 2026, Lefthand has written his name all over the cycling world record pages \u2014 both virtual and real life \u2014 many, many times and with no intent on stopping soon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA couple years ago, I would never think of myself as a world record holder, much less, someone who\u2019s attempting to do those types of things,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s oddly become a familiar ground for me. \u201d<\/p>\n<p>Since last spring, Lefthand has set and been certified for 32 world records recognized by Guinness and the World Ultra Cycling Association, or WUCA.<\/p>\n<p>This began with an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.net\/news\/local\/2025\/apr\/15\/man-aims-for-virtual-cycling-world-record-public-invited-to-witness-the-attempt\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">attempt at several virtual cycling records<\/a> in April.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/IMG_5386-1200x675.jpg\" class=\"attachment-large size-large\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"photo_credit\">Photo supplied, Bailey Lefthand<\/p>\n<p>Matthew Lefthand of Marriott-Slaterville, seen here in this undated photo from 2025, has pursued and set several cycling world records over the past year. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn April, I got ready to do a ride that was going to break 14 world records,\u201d he said. \u201cTwelve (were verified) by WUCA and all 14 by Guinness. WUCA has a relationship with Guinness where their world records become Guinness World records. Twelve of the world records were through WUCA and there was a whole process I had to go through that was pretty intense \u2014 I had to do an outdoor ride to certify how fast I was so they could gauge my indoor speed more accurately. \u2026 The two Guinness world records had their own level of verification. All other records continue to stand as of mid-January.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/IMG_8484-1200x800.jpg\" class=\"attachment-large size-large\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"photo_credit\">Rob Nielsen, Standard-Examiner<\/p>\n<p>Matthew Lefthand goes for the 24-hour virtual cycling record in Ogden on Saturday, April 19, 2025. <\/p>\n<p>He said that it hasn\u2019t necessarily been an easy ride.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not without its hard work \u2014 I trained 25 hours or more per week for a couple of years to get into the kind of shape to be able to do it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>This was especially true when Lefthand sustained a sidelining injury last fall.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoing these things, you don\u2019t have \u2018no risks;\u2019 that\u2019s for sure,\u201d he said. \u201cI was getting ready to do, in October, a gravel world record where I was going to ride for 12 hours on gravel and set all of these gravel world records that haven\u2019t been set yet, so they would be initial records. \u2026 In a training ride the week before the event, I crashed on a trail \u2014 there was a pallet on the trail that hadn\u2019t previously been there when I\u2019d gone on it before and I was going too fast to stop and do anything. So I went over the top of this pallet, fell and broke my collarbone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said this was a very trying moment.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"750\" height=\"938\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/MLefthand-Bike-Sebring-24hr-Awards-750x938.jpg\" class=\"attachment-large size-large\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"photo_credit\">Photo supplied<\/p>\n<p>Marriott-Slaterville&#8217;s Matthew Lefthand celebrates his record-breaking win in Bike Sebring&#8217;s 24-hour, nondrifting competition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was pretty upset at that point,\u201d he said. \u201cI was a week away from doing the other event. \u2026 I was going to do a race in Oklahoma and that just derailed everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lefthand said the injury required surgery and changed the trajectory of the rest of his year. He would end up going to Arizona in December to set his first set of recumbent bike records.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was mostly healed and mostly everything felt good,\u201d he said. \u201cIt was hard work, but I bounced back, finished the World Cup and was happy to salvage the year, if you will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lefthand described the time since his initial record-setting venture as \u201cwild\u201d and that it was the beginning of his adventures.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI went from being an avid cyclist, someone who was very interested in doing all of these rides, to someone who is now considering themselves doing this professionally and more full-time,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019re planning on traveling a lot this year to different states for different races.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said that he and his family recently picked up a travel van in Missouri to make cross-country journeys easier.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPart of our journey this year will be to travel to these races as a family and we\u2019re adventuring along the way,\u201d he said. \u201cThis next year, we\u2019re going to do that six or seven more times throughout the year where we travel somewhere, I do a record ride or race or something like that, and then we\u2019ll spend a few days in the area traveling, adventuring and hiking as a family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lefthand said he has around one to two races per month throughout 2026.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCycling is something that I love and I love to do it,\u201d he said. \u201cNow I have a little more of a job aspect to it where I expect myself and other people expect me to perform some, so there\u2019 a little bit more pressure than normal. But it\u2019s an interesting pressure because it\u2019s, once again, something I love.
