{"id":414597,"date":"2026-01-17T04:46:16","date_gmt":"2026-01-17T04:46:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/414597\/"},"modified":"2026-01-17T04:46:16","modified_gmt":"2026-01-17T04:46:16","slug":"it-was-about-time-saskatchewan-producers-welcome-canada-china-deal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/414597\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018It was about time\u2019: Saskatchewan producers welcome Canada-China deal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Saskatchewan producers are welcoming Canada\u2019s new <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/trade-deal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">trade deal<\/a> with China, saying it\u2019s likely to provide some relief for the province\u2019s agriculture industry.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/70c8fc80.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"position:absolute;width:1px;height:1px\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Farmers in <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/saskatchewan\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Saskatchewan<\/a> woke to the news that the federal government reached a deal with Bejing early Friday morning to slash <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/tariffs\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">tariffs<\/a> on a number of Chinese electric vehicles in exchange for China dropping duties on agriculture products.<\/p>\n<p>China will lower tariffs on Canadian <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/canola\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">canola<\/a> seed to a combined rate of approximately 15 per cent from 84 per cent by March 1.<\/p>\n<p>Canada also expects canola meal, lobsters, crabs and peas to no longer be subject to Chinese \u201canti-discrimination\u201d tariffs from March to at least the end of the year.<\/p>\n<p>Canada imposed a 100 per cent tariff on Chinese electric vehicles and a 25 per cent import tax on steel and aluminum over the last two years.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>Last year, China responded by hitting Canada with a 100 per cent tariff on various agricultural products, including canola oil and peas, plus a 25 per cent levy on pork and seafood products. The country has also imposed a 76 per cent tariff on Canadian canola seed,\u00a0though the prime minister\u2019s office said that figure was closer to 84 per cent when combined with other duties in place.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"170\" height=\"225\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1767930311_275_national.jpg\" alt=\"For news impacting Canada and around the world, sign up for breaking news alerts delivered directly to you when they happen.\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tGet breaking National news<\/p>\n<p>For news impacting Canada and around the world, sign up for breaking news alerts delivered directly to you when they happen.<\/p>\n<p>Bill Prybylski, the president of the Agricultural Producers Association of Saskatchewan, said the deal is a \u201cgood start\u201d for growers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom a producer\u2019s perspective, this is just positive news,\u201d said Prybylski, adding the deal comes at an ideal time for farmers looking to get an idea of how much to plant this spring.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\tMore on Canada<br \/>\n\t\t\tMore videos\n\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt just gives producers some comfort that if they put the canola seeds in the ground and get some decent yields, that there will be an opportunity to realize a profit from our canola crops,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Chris Davison, president and CEO of the Canola Council of Canada, shares similar sentiments to Prybylski that the deal boosts confidence among local canola growers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s really about providing that predictability and confidence going forward that there\u2019s going to be some more outlets, some more demand signals for the crop that farmers are producing,\u201d said Davison.<\/p>\n<p>But while the deal addresses tariffs on canola meal and seeds, the deal made no mention of canola oil, which is subject to a 100 per cent tariff.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>According to Prybylski, the remaining tariffs on canola oil can affect the price of the other canola products.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the crushers aren\u2019t able to generate a profit from the oil, they\u2019re not willing to pay maybe as much for the seed when they buy it from the producers.
