FORT MYERS, Fla. \u2014 Florida Gulf Coast University’s women’s tennis team swept all three doubles matches and earned a 4\u20133 victory over Miami (Ohio) on Saturday afternoon at the FGCU Tennis Complex.<\/p>\n
“The ladies are fighting very hard and putting in a great effort,” FGCU head coach Courtney Vernon<\/a> said. “They know they have a lot to work on and improve, but the fight is there. We are looking forward to preparing for the University of Miami on Wednesday.”<\/p>\n FGCU (2\u20130) set the tone early in doubles play. June Bjork<\/a> and Africa Burillo<\/a> earned a 6\u20134 win in singles No. 1 before Anjali Kotecha<\/a> and Nora Svensson<\/a> clinched the doubles point with a 7\u20135 victory in the No. 2 doubles.\u00a0 Ashley Matz<\/a> and Sabarina Jaramillo<\/a> completed the sweep with a 7\u20136 (0) win for doubles No. 3.<\/p>\n In singles action,\u00a0\u00a0Kotecha extended the Eagles’ lead with a 6\u20130, 6\u20133 win for singles No. 5. Bjork followed with a 6\u20133, 6\u20132 victory for the No. 3 singles to give FGCU a 3\u20130 advantage.<\/p>\n Miami (Ohio) (0\u20131) got on the scoreboard when Burillo battled through three sets but fell 6\u20131, 1\u20136, 6\u20133 for the No. 6 singles. The RedHawks continued to close the gap as Svensson dropped a 6\u20134, 7\u20136 (2) decision at singles No. 1.<\/p>\n The match came down to singles No. 4, where Jaramillo rebounded after dropping the first set 6\u20134 to earn a 6\u20132, 6\u20131 victory and clinch the match for the Green & Blue.<\/p>\n FGCU will return to action Wednesday with an 11 a.m. match at Miami.
