Red Bull boss Laurent Mekies has revealed that the team’s first F1 power unit has been named after the late founder of the team, Dietrich Mateschitz.<\/p>\n
Mateschitz, who died in October 2022, bought the Jaguar team in 2004 and re-branded it as Red Bull, with the team winning six drivers’ and four constructors’ crowns in his lifetime, with the Austrian passing away the day before the team clinched the 2022 title in the United States.<\/p>\n
In 2021, Red Bull Powertrains was formed to manage the Honda engines the team were running after the Japanese manufacturer announced its withdrawal, with a deal being struck in 2023 for Ford to join Red Bull as a technical partner as it produced its own in-house engines for the first time for ’26.<\/p>\n
The new units will power both Red Bull and Racing Bulls, as Mekies revealed the first power unit will be christened the ‘DM01’ in tribute to Mateschitz.<\/p>\n
“This very first engine is called ‘DM01’ in tribute to Mr Mateschitz,” Mekies revealed.<\/p>\n
“It is his vision, his boldness, he released the Red Bull spirit that is the reason we are all here today.\u00a0<\/p>\n
“He made that unbelievable decision at the time to put us onto the route of being completely independent with both the chassis and the power unit.<\/p>\n
