The data covers the period up to Jan. 10.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Twenty measles cases since February have required hospitalization, including 16 children under the age of 10, according to the province.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">In an update earlier this week, the province warned people might have been exposed to measles at the C.W. Wiebe Medical Centre Teen Clinic at 385 Main St. in Winkler on Jan. 8 from 12:15 p.m. to 2:45 p.m.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Health authorities are asking people who were at the health-care facility during that time to monitor for symptoms until Jan. 30.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Canada reported 5,425 measles cases in 2025, following <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/health\/canada-measles-elimination-risk-1.7541504#:~:text=Canada%27s%20outbreak%20began%20in%20October%202024.%20That%20means%20if%20sustained%20transmission%20continues%20until%20October%202025%2C%20the%20Pan%20American%20Health%20Organization%C2%A0(PAHO)%20can%20revoke%20the%20elimination%20status.\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:an outbreak that began in October 2024;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">an outbreak that began in October 2024<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/health-infobase.canada.ca\/measles-rubella\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:latest federal data says;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">latest federal data says<\/a>. Even a few minutes in the same space as a sick person poses infection risks, as the virus can linger on surfaces for two hours after an infected person leaves.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Symptoms generally appear seven to 21 days after exposure, and may include a fever, runny nose, drowsiness and red eyes. Small white spots can also appear on the inside of the mouth or throat, the province said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Several days after the initial symptoms, a blotchy red rash appears on the face and progresses down the body.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Immunization is the only way to protect people from contracting measles, Manitoba Health says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">In Manitoba, a two-dose vaccine program for measles, mumps, rubella and varicella (chickenpox) is routinely provided for children at least one year old, and again between ages four and six. If a child is exposed to measles, the province said, a second dose can be given earlier.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Just over 86 per cent of reported measles cases in Manitoba involved people who had no doses of the vaccine against the virus,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.mb.ca\/health\/publichealth\/diseases\/measles.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:according to the province&#039;s data;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"> according to the province&#8217;s data<\/a>.
