If Aaron Rodgers is going to continue his NFL career, there’s still a chance he may remain with the Pittsburgh Steelers, according to ESPN’s Adam Schfter.

Schefter, citing sources, reported Sunday that the “Steelers remain open to an Aaron Rodgers reunion in 2026, even though it’s unlikely due to Mike Tomlin’s resignation.”

Schefter noted that Rodgers “did not commit to retiring or returning to the Steelers during his conversations with the organization, according to sources, and wants to take time away before deciding his future.”

Schefter also reported that “Steelers players are more than open to Rodgers returning to Pittsburgh; they want the four-time league MVP back and conveyed as much to various members of the Steelers organization during their exit meetings last week”

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport said on Saturday he doesn’t expect Rodgers to return to the Steelers in 2026 after Tomlin’s decision to step down as head coach (starts at :43 mark).

Speaking to reporters after Monday’s playoff loss to the Houston Texans, Rodgers said he was “not going to make any emotional decisions” when asked about his playing future.

Rodgers did say last summer after signing with the Steelers that he was “pretty sure” 2025 would be the final year of his career. He has sounded open to continuing his career as the season went on.

Prior to Pittsburgh’s Week 18 game, Rodgers said there might be “one or two” interested in signing him “if I decide I still want to play.”

This season wasn’t exactly a return to form for Rodgers. He finished 23rd out of 28 qualified quarterbacks in QBR. His .02 EPA per play ranked 22nd out of 37 quarterbacks who played at least 250 snaps.

Given how instrumental Tomlin reportedly was in getting Rodgers to sign with the Steelers, it’s not surprising the organization would prefer to go in a different direction with a new head coach coming in.

Tomlin’s replacement will presumably want to add a quarterback who fits their scheme. Rodgers is also 42 and not likely to play much longer, even if he decides to extend his career into 2026.

Rodgers’ overall numbers this season were solid with 3,322 yards, 24 touchdowns and seven interceptions in 16 starts. He helped the Steelers win the AFC North for the first time since 2020.

[436
49,48,514,82
post-417424","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-nfl","tag-ca","tag-canada","tag-nfl","tag-sports
["GET
