A new report just improved the Toronto Blue Jays<\/a> and New York Mets<\/a>\u2018 chances of luring Cody Bellinger<\/a> away from the New York Yankees<\/a> in free agency.<\/p>\n

The Blue Jays and Mets have been surprisingly linked to each other over the last few days. Both big market clubs were among the top contenders for the No. 1 player in free agency this offseason, Kyle Tucker<\/a>. However, despite their best efforts, including a 10-year offer from the Jays<\/a>, they came up well short of the Los Angeles Dodgers<\/a> and their four-year, $240 million offer<\/a>.<\/p>\n

But that\u2019s not where it ends. In response to their failure to sign Tucker, the NY Mets surprised many and actually lured away Jays homegrown All-Star Bo Bichette<\/a> with a three-year deal worth $126 million<\/a>. <\/p>\n

In the fallout of the Tucker and Bichette signings, there has been speculation that the Blue Jays could take the money they were looking to give those two and invest it in Yankees star Cody Bellinger. The NY Mets have also been linked to a pursuit of the one-time NL MVP even after signing Bichette.<\/p>\n

Well, a new report offers up some interesting news that improves either team\u2019s chance of luring the versatile veteran away from the Bronx. According to Daily News MLB writer Bill Madden<\/a>, the Yankees \u201care not budging on their reported 5 year\/$155-160 offer for him.\u201d Furthermore, a source told Madden, \u201cThey will not engage in a bidding war for him.\u201d<\/p>\n

It has been known for the last year that NY Yankees co-owner Hal Steinbrenner would rather see the club cut payroll instead of add more money. So while the team has a reputation for spending big in free agency, it isn\u2019t completely shocking that they are not willing to join the trend of huge yearly salaries for free agents despite the serious risks to their lineup next season.<\/p>\n

It means that if the Blue Jays or the NY Mets are willing to go higher than the Yankees\u2019 yearly average of $32 million, they could add a pretty good defender and bat to their lineups for 2026 and beyond.<\/p>\n
