Having been reduced to playing a residency in the glitzy fun palaces of Branson, Missouri, a kind of low-rent Las Vegas, he felt deserted by country music radio and all but ignored by his record company. Then he met a hip-hop\/metal record producer who not only saved his career but, it\u2019s claimed, added 10 years to his life by recording the groundbreaking solo acoustic classic American Recordings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:5.67%;\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Mm2aXHnAcTD5rV3KPSXBUP.png\" alt=\"Classic Rock divider\"   loading=\"lazy\" data-new-v2-image=\"true\" data-original-mos=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Mm2aXHnAcTD5rV3KPSXBUP.png\" data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Mm2aXHnAcTD5rV3KPSXBUP.png\" class=\"inline\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"d04c4bb6-53f6-4eeb-bcaf-bc57c69f556c\">Lou Robin (manager): Johnny had been with Polygram since 1986. He owed them one more album and wanted to do a gospel album, but they didn\u2019t want that, so they were kinda at loggerheads.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"d04c4bb6-53f6-4eeb-bcaf-bc57c69f556c-1\">John Carter Cash (son): He was recovering from a broken jaw caused by dental surgery, and he\u2019d also had surgery on his knee. He was suffering chronic pain and got to a point where he could no longer take opiates for that, but he was determined to endure.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p>Lou Robin: We were talking to various labels, but none of them were coming up with fresh ideas. Then our agent called one day and said that <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/features\/rick-rubin-a-guide-to-his-best-albums\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/features\/rick-rubin-a-guide-to-his-best-albums\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rick Rubin<\/a> of American Recordings, who was a new name to me, would like to meet with John. I would like you to sit in my living room with a guitar and two microphones and just sing to your heart\u2019s content, everything you ever wanted to record.\u201d I said: \u201cThat sounds good to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Roseanne Cash (daughter): I thought: \u201cThis is odd. There might have been minor exceptions to that, but I felt like it would be an exciting challenge to work with an established artist, or a legendary artist who might not be in the best place in his career at the moment.<\/p>\n<p>Lou Robin: One of the first things they did was to exchange cassettes between LA, where Rick was based, and Nashville where Johnny lived.<\/p>\n<p>Rick Rubin: I would send Johnny CDs that contained thirty songs sometimes, other times it might be one. It was just whatever I thought he might like. Over 70 solo acoustic demos are recorded, many more than once.<\/p>\n<p>Rosanne Cash: Rick became not just his producer but his muse. He was like this angel that swooped down into his life. He gave Dad this wonderful focus, inspiration and passion<\/p>\n<p>My dad and Rick sat there and stared at each other for two minutes without saying anything.<\/p>\n<p>John Carter Cash<\/p>\n<p id=\"f89d7f20-1a29-4447-8317-366c37ebaf77\">Lou Robin: The living room in Rick\u2019s house in Hollywood was not very big. It had a couple of couches and easy chairs, and along one wall was the recording equipment, and there were heavy drapes which made it a studio quality environment. So Johnny could come in, sit down and just play.<\/p>\n<p>Johnny Cash: It gave me a profound sense of d\u00e9j\u00e0 vu. It very much reminded me of the early days at Sun Records. Sam Phillips put me in front of that microphone at Sun Records in 1955 for the first time and said: \u201cLet\u2019s hear what you\u2019ve got. Sing your heart out.\u201d And I\u2019d sing one or two, and he\u2019d say: \u201cSing another one. Let\u2019s hear one more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lou Robin: They invited various prominent songwriters to come and they each got an hour-long appointment with John. <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/features\/glenn-danzig-interview-2013\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/features\/glenn-danzig-interview-2013\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Glenn Danzig<\/a> was one of those. At the appointment, they would play their songs, Rick would record them and, if John liked them when they listened again, he\u2019d record them.<\/p>\n<p id=\"2d9d79f4-1eda-4ae1-9af5-f8c939ab025a\">Glenn Danzig (composer of Thirteen): Rick called and asked if I knew who Johnny Cash was, and I said: \u201cFuck yeah. I know who Johnny Cash is.\u201d And they said: \u201cWould you write a song for him?\u201d I wrote [Thirteen] in, like, a half-hour, as soon as I got off the phone. The song was just my impression of who Johnny Cash was and what he meant.<\/p>\n<p>John Carter Cash: They also did some tracks with father backed by other musicians, like Flea from <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/features\/every-red-hot-chili-peppers-ranked-from-worst-to-best\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/features\/every-red-hot-chili-peppers-ranked-from-worst-to-best\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Red Hot Chili Peppers<\/a>, Billy Gibbons from <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/features\/zz-top-best-albums\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/features\/zz-top-best-albums\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ZZ Top<\/a>, Tom Petty and others.<\/p>\n<p>Mike Campbell (guitarist, Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers): Working in the studio with him was something that I treasure. It was such an intimate moment and he was so kind to us, and to me in particular. He treated me like an equal, which is silly. Johnny Cash is a big hero of mine and my dad.<\/p>\n<p>Rick Rubin: Ultimately, after many experiments, we looked at each other and decided that we liked the acoustic stuff &#8211; those first demos &#8211; better than any of the experiments. He was like this angel that swooped down into his life. <\/p>\n<p>Roseanne Cash<\/p>\n<p id=\"a93da195-dcf4-4296-94e9-89f7285c0ea4\">Johnny Cash: The song is the thing that matters, before I can record, I have to hear it, sing it, and know that I can make it feel like my own, or it won\u2019t work. I worked on these songs until it felt like they were my own.<\/p>\n<p>Nick Lowe (composer of The Beast In Me): He was doing this show at Wembley [probably March 1986]. I had this idea for a song and Carlene [Carlene Carter, wife of Nick Lowe\/daughter of Johnny Cash] told him about it, and he said: \u201cI\u2019ll come round and hear it on the way to Wembley.\u201d He turned up with his whole entourage at our house. And I played him the song, which was incredibly embarrassing because it wasn\u2019t really ready yet. And he said: \u201cIt\u2019s not right but it\u2019s a really good idea\u2026\u201d And every time I\u2019d see him after that he\u2019d always ask me: \u201cHow\u2019s The Beast In Me coming on?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Finally, after he did a show at the Royal Albert Hall [May 1989] and asked me about it again, I went home and finished it! And I sent it to him, and I didn\u2019t hear anything. Smokey said: \u201cYeah, Johnny\u2019s going to be doing other people\u2019s tunes. Send us down something.\u201d I had a song and I hadn\u2019t recorded it, so I said: \u201cHey, it\u2019s got all the stuff that Johnny likes \u2013 trains and death, John Wilkes Booth, the cross\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lou Robin: Rick would also come to Nashville and they would sit and exchange ideas and philosophies in The Cash Cabin.<\/p>\n<p>John Carter Cash: Back then, it was basically just a room about twenty-seven foot by twenty-nine foot, with a big stairwell up to the loft in the middle. There was no control room. The only recording equipment was a sixteen-bit ADAT recorder and a sixteen-channel mixing board. There were only two microphones . That\u2019s what he used for Why Me Lord?. As far as I know, that was the only song on the first American Recordings album that was actually recorded there.<\/p>\n<p>Rick Rubin: Once we decided what the album was going to be, I suggested: \u201cHow would you feel about getting up in a little club and doing some of these songs acoustically? Just to see what it\u2019s like playing them in front of an audience, by yourself?\u201d And he said he was open to it. People were packed in belly to belly, back to back. No bullshit, no fooling around, just played these incredible songs and destroyed the place.<\/p>\n<p>Rick Rubin: It was an incredible night. Dead silent. You could hear a pin drop. People couldn\u2019t believe it was Johnny Cash there in The Viper Room.<\/p>\n<p>Lou Robin: He sang for forty-five minutes, all the songs. Everybody just went crazy. When he was through, he wanted to give the people a little something more than just forty-five minutes\u2019 worth of music. He leaned down to June, who was in the front row, and said: \u201cWhat do I do now?\u201d To which she said: \u201cWell, sing your hits.\u201d So that\u2019s what he did.<\/p>\n<p>Rick Rubin: People who were there that night still talk about it as one of the greatest things they\u2019ve ever seen.<\/p>\n<p id=\"242e772a-2e6b-4d8a-95a4-e01c82878ad7\">April 26, 1994: American Recordings is released.<\/p>\n<p>Leonard Cohen (composer of Bird On A Wire): I didn\u2019t believe my ears. Only the man\u2019s voice and guitar. I was blown away!<\/p>\n<p>Rick Rubin: I think he knew it was good, but it wasn\u2019t until it came out and got the critical praise that it really sank in. The fact that young people were coming up to him, telling him how much they liked the album, that\u2019s when he really knew.<\/p>\n<p>Johnny Cash: I\u2019m no fool. I know about demographics and the age group that buys most records. So I really had not expected anything more.<\/p>\n<p>Lou Robin: In the music business you can hope to have a few big years and then fade away but American Recordings was the start of a second career. In the final analysis, I\u2019d say those American Recordings albums probably added ten years to his life, because he had something exciting to do again. And I don\u2019t just mean his career, I mean his life.
