{"id":418280,"date":"2026-01-18T23:55:07","date_gmt":"2026-01-18T23:55:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/418280\/"},"modified":"2026-01-18T23:55:07","modified_gmt":"2026-01-18T23:55:07","slug":"new-australian-carbon-credit-scheme-for-solar-and-evs-accused-of-potentially-misleading-customers-energy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/418280\/","title":{"rendered":"New Australian carbon credit scheme for solar and EVs accused of potentially misleading customers | Energy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">A new Australian carbon offset company has been accused of potentially misleading customers by offering to generate thousands of credits for their solar panels and electric vehicles in a scheme that climate campaigners have labelled as junk.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Not-for-profit group Climate Integrity has written to the corporate watchdog asking for an investigation into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aetium.com.au\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Aetium<\/a>, a company which is asking consumers and organisations to register their rooftop solar, EVs and forests in return for carbon credits.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">One expert told Guardian Australia that Aetium\u2019s online scheme had \u201cjettisoned\u201d a core principle in the world of carbon offsets \u2013 that projects can only generate credits if they would not have happened without the financial incentive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">More than 4,000 projects have been registered with Aetium since February last year, including more than 150 by the Cassowary Coast regional council in Queensland and more than 30 EVs owned by the Europcar rental car service, according to the scheme\u2019s website.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The company defended its scheme and said it aimed to challenge the current system of how people and organisations could be rewarded for actions they had taken to cut emissions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edo.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/251110-Aetium-ACCC-Complaint-FINAL.pdf\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">complaint<\/a> to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, climate advocacy organisation Climate Integrity alleges Aetium is misleading consumers about the carbon offset scheme\u2019s potential environmental benefits.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">A key concern was the scheme allegedly failed the \u201cadditionality\u201d standard \u2013 a safeguard in carbon offset schemes that tests whether emissions reductions would have occurred without the scheme.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">This aims to ensure credits bought represent additional emissions reductions, rather than business-as-usual activities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cAetium\u2019s credits fail to meet an additionality test because consumers signing up to the scheme would have bought and used their EVs or solar panels whether Aetium existed or not,\u201d Climate Integrity\u2019s executive director, Claire Snyder, said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">On its website, the company says that: \u201cAt Aetium, \u2018additionality\u2019 means the CO2 reduction would not have occurred if the solar system, EV or forestry did not exist\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Snyder said Aetium\u2019s definition was \u201cout of step with virtually all established carbon credit schemes and the evidence-backed view of climate scientists\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cFailing to satisfy the additionality test runs the risk that consumers become misled about their contributions to reducing emissions, and could ultimately undermine efforts to tackle the climate crisis,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Divergent\u2019 from accepted practice<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Aetium says it is not currently generating money from the scheme. According to its website, it would make money through registration fees it plans to begin charging from 1 March and by collecting a 7% share of the carbon credits it issues.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">According to Aetium\u2019s project registry, the Cassowary Coast regional council in far north Queensland has registered 131 forest projects and 23 solar PV installations, representing about 4,500 tonnes of CO2 credits, with the company.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">It also shows more than 30 electric vehicles owned by the international rental car company Europcar are registered with Aetium.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Aetium\u2019s managing director, Christopher Ride, said that, to date, \u201cno carbon reductions have been certified by Aetium, no fees have been taken, no credits have been sold or retired, and no payments have been made\u201d due to a minimum 12-month certification period for projects that the company has set.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">He said the company had not been made aware of any formal complaint to the ACCC. The ACCC confirmed to Guardian Australia it had received a complaint.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/email-newsletters?CMP=copyembed&amp;CMP=emailbutton\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sign up: AU Breaking News email<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The international Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/icvcm.org\/core-carbon-principles\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">set of principles<\/a> says emissions reductions \u201cshall be additional, i.e., they would not have occurred in the absence of the incentive created by carbon credit revenues\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Prof Andrew Macintosh, an environmental law professor at the Australian National University and the former head of the federal government\u2019s emissions reduction assurance committee, said: \u201cOf all the registries I have reviewed globally, Aetium stands out as one of the most divergent from accepted practice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">He said the cornerstone of this was the concept of additionality.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cAetium have jettisoned this principle and instead try to redefine additionality, with the consequence that they will issue credits for standard activities where the emissions reductions have nothing to do with the incentive provided by the scheme,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cFrom the information available, there also don\u2019t appear to be third-party verification processes and the scheme seems to fall incredibly short of standard practice regarding transparency.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cI feel badly for anybody who buys credits from Aetium in the belief they are helping \u2018fight climate change\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In response to questions from Guardian Australia, Ride said: \u201cWe believe the current system should be challenged, and genuine change is needed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWe need divergence from the accepted practices.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">He said the company wanted to reward broad participation in driving down emissions. Ride said that it remained \u201cunknown\u201d whether Aetium would could ultimately generate sales from the credits it issued but \u201cour hope is this will encourage more awareness and more investment\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Aetium also promotes its membership of the Smart <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/energy-australia\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Energy<\/a> Council, Electric Vehicle Council and Carbon Market Institute and its status as a signatory to the Australian Carbon Industry Code of Conduct.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">A Smart Energy Council spokesperson said membership was open to any organisation in the renewable energy sector, and an Electric Vehicle Council spokesperson said it was not a regulator and it was common for members to use its branding.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">A Cassowary Coast council spokesperson said the council had registered its solar installations and bushland reserves with Aetium as a trial and any credits would be used to reinvest in \u201clike-minded projects\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Dr Sasha Courville, chief executive of the Carbon Market Institute, said membership of the institute \u201cdoes not include independent checks of business activities\u201d but Aetium was bound by the Australian Carbon Industry code of conduct.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">But she said the code \u201cdoes not regulate or assess the technical quality of carbon credits\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">She said the institute supported maturing standards in the voluntary carbon market and pointed to the \u201cimportant work\u201d of the Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market that \u201chas developed a global benchmark for high-integrity carbon credits\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Guardian requested comment from Europcar.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A new Australian carbon offset company has been accused of potentially misleading customers by offering to generate thousands&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":418281,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[22],"tags":[49,48,295,66],"class_list":{"0":"post-418280","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-environment","8":"tag-ca","9":"tag-canada","10":"tag-environment","11":"tag-science"},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/418280","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=418280"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/418280\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/418281"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=418280"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=418280"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=418280"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
