(Supplied: Vicki Karalis)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Their unexpected arrival saw the Sandringham Lifesaving Club close the beach on Sunday, while local social media pages were awash with photos of the sea creatures.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Here&#8217;s what we know about this &#8220;smack&#8221; of jellyfish.<\/p>\n<p>What species are the jellyfish?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">SEA LIFE Melbourne Aquarium marine biologist and education manager Olivia Hill said the creatures were lion&#8217;s mane jellyfish.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Native to the bay, they are characterised by their bright red belly and long stingers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Ms Hill said while these jellies could be one of the largest types in the world \u2014 growing &#8220;as big as a washing machine&#8221; in Antarctica \u2014 the subspecies living in Victoria was much smaller.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Two red jellyfish in the foreground, with others in the background.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1a89faa6b1e91edde556fbae3a6eb741.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Lion&#8217;s mane jellyfish grow to about the size of an orange in Victoria. (Supplied: Edithvale Life Saving Club)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">And these tentacles do sting, but the venom is not lethal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;You&#8217;ll get a red welt, like a red stripe, from where it stung you for maybe two or three days,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It does hurt, but it doesn&#8217;t hurt as much as other sorts of jellies.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Where have they been seen, and why are there so many?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The influx of lion&#8217;s mane jellyfish was witnessed along the eastern shoreline of Melbourne&#8217;s Port Phillip Bay over the weekend.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Vicki Karalis said she had received messages from people seeing the stingers in large numbers from Elwood all the way to the Mornington Peninsula.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Ms Hill said a &#8220;perfect storm&#8221; led to a large and highly visible population.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Firstly, she said the temperature had to be right for reproduction: above 18 degrees Celsius, which was common during the summer months.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Next, the baby jellyfish would have to feast on an influx of food, which was likely delivered in a bout of rain following a dry spell in recent weeks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">This pushed built-up nutrients from the Yarra River into the bay.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;When you get a big flash of rain after a long dry spell, all of these nutrients that have been sitting around in these rivers, waiting patiently to end up in the ocean, end up there all at once,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;So it&#8217;s a really big nutrient spike, and that all sends quite a lot of animals and small plankton into overdrive because there&#8217;s so much food around.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A lone lion's mane jellyfish in the water.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/39e3fb7c2d2a820c61898e84cd56023c.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Lion&#8217;s mane jellyfish thrive in warmer waters with lots of food. (Supplied: Vicki Karalis)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Then, Ms Hill said, a big westerly wind on Friday pushed the large colony towards the eastern part of Port Phillip Bay.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Generally, jellies don&#8217;t swim around,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;If they&#8217;re going to go somewhere, they get pushed around by the water currents and the wind&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">She said when lots of jellyfish were seen in one area, they would likely dissipate quickly due to the wind and currents changing direction.<\/p>\n<p>Have we had this many show up before?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Ms Hill said it was &#8220;relatively common&#8221; to see something like this at this time of year, but the location varied depending on the wind patterns and water currents.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It&#8217;s absolutely natural to the ecosystem,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The ABC reported a <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2022-01-22\/melbourne-beaches-inundated-with-lions-mane-jellyfish\/100772062\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/100772062\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">similar phenomenon happening at Melbourne&#8217;s eastern beaches four years ago<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A red and white jellyfish swims in dark waters.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/676dfb87454d905d6cc22f526e0c7baf.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">This lion&#8217;s mane jellyfish was spotted in the Elwood canal in suburban Melbourne in January 2022. (Supplied: Isaac Herman)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It follows another jellyfish event last month, in which multiple bluebottles were seen in the bay \u2014 but for a different reason.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Tasmania-based jellyfish researcher Lisa-Ann Gershwin said bluebottles lived in the Tasman Sea, between Australia and New Zealand, and in that case, they happened to have been blown into the bay by the wind.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;You think about the logistics of the wind somehow doing that just at the right time \u2014 it&#8217;s pretty incredible, really,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>Is it safe to swim?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Dr Gershwin said if you swam alongside that many lion&#8217;s mane jellyfish, you were likely to get stung, and that would probably hurt.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;There&#8217;ll be lots of fragments of their tentacles in the water, so for people who don&#8217;t want to experience those stingy feelings, give it [swimming] a break for a couple of days,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Ms Hill urged beachgoers to stay away from them on the shore, because even dead ones could sting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">She said children and dogs were affected by the venom in a similar way to adults and they should be kept away from them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Dr Karalis, who is also a GP, said <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.healthdirect.gov.au\/jellyfish-stings\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">while the sting was not fatal<\/a>, anyone who had been stung in the eye or had an allergic reaction should see a doctor.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A red jellyfish on the shore.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/ec57572cb3b986e632f690191c13e029.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The creatures can still sting when they&#8217;re dead.
