Photo by John Lappa \/Sudbury StarArticle content<\/p>\n<p>There is good news for the cycling community in Greater Sudbury \u2014 the city is beefing up its active transportation corridors.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Advertisement 2<\/p>\n<p>This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below.<\/p>\n<p>Article content<\/p>\n<p>During Monday\u2019s meeting of the operations committee, members approved two resolutions that will make it easier to get around the city without a vehicle.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Article content<\/p>\n<p>Recommended Videos<\/p>\n<p>Article content<\/p>\n<p>The first motion will\u00a0designate\u00a0parts of Notre Dame Avenue, from Wilma to Elm Street, and Paris Street, from Elm to Van Horne Street, as cycling facilities.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The second motion will\u00a0designate\u00a0a short stretch of Paris Street, from David to McNaughton Street, as a multi-use path.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While staff said the city does not have its own data\u00a0regarding\u00a0pedestrian and bicycle traffic, \u201canonymized third-party trip-tracking data provides insight into activity trends. This data should be interpreted as a trend indicator, as it is influenced by the number of active users, but it supports continued investment in walking and cycling infrastructure and programs.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-async=\"\">LyAnne Chenier, of <a data-evt-val=\"{\" control_fields=\"\" link=\"\" infrastructure=\"\" services=\"\" data-evt=\"click\" data-evt-typ=\"click\" href=\"https:\/\/www.greatersudbury.ca\/city-hall\/departments-and-services\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">linear infrastructure services<\/a>, shared some of the city\u2019s achievements over the past year.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Last year, the city installed 5.54 lane\u00a0kilometres\u00a0of cycling infrastructure,\u00a0largely along\u00a0Notre Dame Avenue. A 3.4 km cycle track was installed from Wilma Street to Elm Street, while a 1.4 km cycle track was installed from Elm Street to Van Horne Street, along Paris. A 900-metre multi-use path was\u00a0established\u00a0near Bell Park.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Advertisement 4<\/p>\n<p>This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below.<\/p>\n<p>Article content<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIncreasing walking and cycling in our community is an important component of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, while supporting healthier, active communities,\u201d Chenier told committee members. \u201cOver the past year, the city has continued to make steady progress towards this goal.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn 2025, the cycling network expanded by nearly 6 km, bringing the total network to a little over\u00a0150 km\u00a0of cycling infrastructure.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>With the Wilma-to-Van Horne section of the Paris\/Notre Dame Bikeway completed, Chenier said that \u201cthere is now 4.5 km of continuous cycle track from Lasalle to John Street.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The city also installed approximately 0.45 km of new sidewalk along Loach\u2019s Road and Wiltshire Street, which will improve access and connectivity for pedestrians, Chenier said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Advertisement 5<\/p>\n<p>This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below.<\/p>\n<p>Article content<\/p>\n<p>In 2017, the transportation master plan\u00a0identified\u00a0a 268-km cycling network. With the completion of last year\u2019s projects, the city has installed about 56 per cent of the network.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince 2019, the city has also invested in pedestrian infrastructure, including approximately 6.7 km of new\u00a0sidewalk\u00a0and 49 pedestrian crossovers, improving safety and connectivity for people walking,\u201d staff reported.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Chenier said the city installed three crossovers in 2025.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>There is still work to be done. The future\u00a0remains\u00a0unknown for a pilot project\u00a0pertaining to\u00a0winter sidewalk maintenance, approved by the operations committee in September 2023. Cycling infrastructure supports the city\u2019s\u00a0goals\u00a0vis-a-vis climate change and helps to nurture a healthier community.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-async=\"\">Specifically, the resolutions adopted by the committee will help the city achieve 35 per cent active mobility transportation mode share by\u00a02050, and\u00a0will help the city\u00a0attain\u00a0silver bicycle-friendly community status from <a data-evt-val=\"{\" control_fields=\"\" link=\"\" the=\"\" road=\"\" cycling=\"\" coalition=\"\" data-evt=\"click\" data-evt-typ=\"click\" href=\"https:\/\/sharetheroad.ca\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Share the Road Cycling Coalition<\/a> \u2014 a goal for 2026. Currently, Greater Sudbury is a bronze status municipality.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The city recognizes that person-powered transportation is important \u201cin creating a healthier and more sustainable\u00a0community. Initiatives include the development of pedestrian and cycling infrastructure; associated policies and programs to support active transportation; and educational campaigns.
